| Repurposing Genres
I've been digging those sorts of records that manipulate and distort a genre, orienting it towards a new goal. It's just part and parcel of the evolution of genres, but for some reason I've been particularly interested in the idea as of late. List is list. | 1 | | Frontierer Orange Mathematics
Hardcore / Grind -- idk something about the wall-of-noise production style, dillinger-esque noodling, homogenous tone and sheer length of the record (relative to the norm for the genre, at least) can feel almost psychedelic at times, or maybe even drone-like? which is interesting, because it's not overtly so, and i'm not sure it was ever the intent of Frontierer. i mean, its still just riffs, riffs and more riffs, but yeah, its dizzying too - i get lost. the same argument could be made for some Meshuggah, I feel, and certainly Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects - Sol Niger Within | 2 | | Pretend Bones In The Soil, Rust In The Oil
Math Rock -- lazy, elongated math rock with some emo stylings. feels more ambient in vibe than anything tbh, cause (again) I just get lost in its sun-kissed soundscapes and sweet, sweet noodling. may write a review | 3 | | Gorguts Obscura
Death Metal -- pushing dm so far down the rabbit hole that idk what its meant to be. one of those records that I don't think I actually enjoy all that much, but that i'm still perplexed and fascinated by | 4 | | Bad Astronaut Houston: We Have a Drinking Problem
Pop Rock -- not sure the genre has ever been used quite so artfully and maturely and elegantly and stuff | 5 | | Death Grips Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix)
Hip Hop / Industrial -- if you had to point to DG's essential roots, i think they'd be hip hop (though i've seen some long and tedious arguments to the contrary) but again, they've deviated so much that who really cares, it's just quite cool | 6 | | Lil Ugly Mane THREE SIDED TAPE VOLUME ONE
Hip Hop -- another hip top gender bender; tippy, dreamy, noisy, edgy and of course black metal too, yeah, just shove that in there | 7 | | Shô! Shô!
Jazz -- i mean its undeniably jazzy, but the added rock//ambient flairs and general eclecticism makes it feel almost like instrumental hip hop, but live and sample-less. the band themselves indicate as such on their bandcamp. good record btw | 8 | | Melvins Lysol
Sludge Metal -- so damn slow that it feels miles apart from the rock and metal that originally birthed it. i'm not a fan, but its neat | 9 | | Admiral Angry Buster
Metalcore/Sludge Metal -- downtuning to drop Z and then some, but really the end result with the clanging drums and sluggish, shifting time signatures feels just really really tormented, as well as just m/. same goes for IDYLLS - Prayer for Terrene and a few others | 10 | | Swans The Seer
Experimental Rock -- elongate and elongate and elongate and elongate and | 11 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
Black Metal / Shoegaze -- apparently this flips off a lot of what bm traditionally stands for, or at least that's what i've seen it criticised for, appropriation and shit. no potato production to be found here, but arguably some deft evolution brought the genre a bunch of new fans, so yay | 12 | | Rage Against The Machine Rage Against The Machine
Nu-Metal / Rap Metal -- saw some chaps debating what exactly this falls into a while back (i forget who; i think its a fair debate tbh), but the fact that it even spurs such conversations shows what you can do when you inject even the most despised genres with a bit of creativity, passion and musicianship | 13 | | Cecil Taylor One Too Many Salty Swift And Not Goodbye
Free Jazz -- probably gets at the idea behind this list more than most genres do. take an idea, abstract it, abstract it further, pick it apart, put it back together again, upside-down, back-to-front | |

05.31.18 | I hear you man, I've been doing my yearly Ulver - Bergtatt binge as of late, and Ulver's ability to combine acoustic folk guitar/operatic vocals/sound effects with black metal to create a more nature inspired uplifting/romantic style of black metal was truly unique and a game changer in the genre. It's a very primitive romantic black metal album, but it was executed so wonderfully that it remains a classic to this day | AsleepInTheBack
05.31.18 | hmm, yeah I really must got back to Ulver's work. I tried Nattens Madrigal but it wasn't really my thing, though I saw some potential there | TheSpaceMan
05.31.18 | The debate around 12 was me calling it nu metal and other people being wrong | AlexKzillion
06.01.18 | Oh yeah? | TheSpaceMan
06.01.18 | (; | Underflow
06.01.18 | Nattens Madrigal isn't really a good place to start with Ulver | Asdfp277
06.01.18 | cool concept ! |
