Season 2 Rnd 5: Annihilation Recommendation Nation

Round 5 waddup
1Humanfly
II

SLUDGE or POST METAL

no recs over like 10 minutes this time

handicaps:
Ovrot - USED
butcherboy - .1
Frivolous - .1
2Harvey Milk
Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men

Frivolous

"Brown Water"

The first rec starts everything off strong. The song has a very epic progression, starting slow and melancholic, gradually builds up to a sludgy behemoth, and finally closes everything off with a guitar solo (!) that actually fits the music and doesn’t feel forced.

Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue

Frippertronics

"Aura on an Asylum Wall"

Not very sludgy like Harvey Milk but certainly post metal. “Aura on a Asylum Wall” is a bit more than just that though. The song is an avant garde epic featuring some lovely piano, violin and sax. Perhaps not as heavy as i was hoping but i’m not gonna complain, i really dug this. The ending comes together really well and is the best part of the track.

3.8
4O.D.R.A
Sexnarkoman

Archelirion

"Judasz na głodzie"

No-nonsense, southern sounding, riffy sludge featuring some wonderful harsh vocals. This stoner rock influenced jam was certainly good but i actually think it could have used a bit more punch. Even still, the song is simple good fun.

5SubRosa
No Help for the Mighty Ones

dbizzles

"Beneath the Crown"

Daunting and ominous, “Beneath the Crown” was one of the better recs here. I’ve only heard “More Constant than the Gods” by SubRosa but didnt remember it much so i was admittedly nervous going into this. I was pleasantly surprised though. Female vocals are nice to hear in post metal for a change and the unhinged saxophone really elevated the track from solid to great.

3.8
6Mountaineer
Sirens & Slumber

Aberf

"Adrift"

I can always rely on Abe to find a shoegaze variation of any genre i throw at him. Sludge or post metal was no different i suppose. The song has some great otherworldly vibes going and blends heavy riffs with a gazey aesthetic pretty well. It didn't have any real moments that truly accentuated the track but the overarching sound of the song i liked enough to 3.4 it.

3.4
7Terra Tenebrosa
The Tunnels

Avagantamos

"The Arc of Descent"

“The Arc of Descent” makes use of unique sound effects and swirling atmospherics to create a vortex of unsettling energy. The song starts very strong but kinda goes on longer than it probably should. I think i found the track more interesting than anything else but i appreciate the risk and may like this more in context with the rest of the record.

There Are Few Tomorrows for Feeding Our Worries

butcherboy

"To Make Things Good Again"

The score for this prob should be higher but i tacked off some because this wasn’t really in the parameters of sludge or post metal and more blackened noise rock. The song itself is based off of two notes bouncing back and forth while tortured shrieks rear their heads in the background. This short but effective track was fuzzy, heavy and harboured a strange beauty about it.

9Cough
Ritual Abuse

Ovrot

"Crippled Wizard"

Leave it to a song with the word “Wizard” in the name to bring some tasty sludgy riffage. Very interesting vocals; took me a bit to like them but once i got a feel for em, they fit the vibe pretty well. Their reverb effect was a nice addition, made the song feel more wild despite being generally slow paced and doomy. The midpoint and on is where the real flavor is.

3.7
10Melvins
Stag

Bloon

"The Bit"

I’ve only listened to a handful of Melvins' hefty discog but they’ve always seemed like a consistent and adequate bunch. This track was actually one of the better ones i’ve heard. From that little eastern intro to the massive riff on this bad boy, this song was a monster. The guitar tone was also right on point.

3.8
11The Body
No One Deserves Happiness

Chortles

"Prescience"

I see The Body *everywhere* around sput so seeing this here i suppose shouldn't be a surprise. Now, as you can imagine given that cheery album name, this song is pretty bleak. The song is like one huge build. Those super distorted vocals were pretty bizzare but worked. That big crushing outro is exactly what i hoped for too.

Skyward in Triumph

granitenotebook

"Booby trap"

Not the heaviest or hardest hitting of the recs here but a nice time anyway. The vocals are pushed back a bit here but still have a certain edge to them that i liked. The song has that 90s sound quality that could be a hit or miss with some folks.

3.4
13Dirge
Hyperion

Sniff

"Circumpolaris"

4.2

Dirge’s “Circumpolaris” is everything one could want from a post metal jam. It’s dense, grand in scale, and has nice smooth progression. This song doesn’t pound you with relentless dirty riffs but instead engulfs you in a sense of awe and wonder. The change up with the ascending notes at the halfway point was very welcomed and is what truly brought the song to great heights.

"Cold Breaker"

This song had some pretty dope vocals and, of course, riffs. While being an overall cool experience, “Cold Breaker” felt a bit like a stalled nut bust. I thought the song could have bursted into something greater but didn't quite do so. Being a bit harsh but don’t worry i liked it.

3.5
15Leechmilk
Starvation of Locusts

IcelandRevel

"Imbalance"

Slow and low is the name of the game for this Leechmilk track. Right when that first shriek came in i knew this song was gonna be heavy and gross. Id say it didn't disappoint at all. It’s not the best track of its kind but i didn’t really have anything negative to say otherwise.

FullOfSounds

"Behold the Swine"

Dark, heavy, and taking in some slight death metal influence, “Behold the Swine” is a great riff centric, no bs metal fest. While not being granitenotebook’s favorite aspect, i thought the guttural vox were good and fit the tone nicely. The clean break was prob not totally necessary but it was short lived and also built into one of the best segments of the track.

3.7
17Gifts From Enola
From Fathoms

dctarga

"Lionized"

This song specifically reminded me of other post metal big-name Pelican. Not the most original or spicy track but Gifts from Enola are able to have their steady guitar builds payed off. The ending/outro was a bit silly and out of place but other than that, i think this was a good choice.
