Even then, isn't it a little more bluegrass than country? I'm not sure how enthusiastic he would be about that genre. Anyways, Jason Isbell all day, both his latest album and Southeastern are tight. |

04.23.18 | There are apparently some differences in all three, so maybe bluegrass isn't Boney's thing quite as much as country is. |

04.23.18 | People got some good ones already but I’ll throw some in as well:
Jason Isbell - Southeastern; a perfect record regardless of genre, check out my review
Guy Clark - Old No. 1
Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
John Moreland - In the Throes
Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day
Turnpike Troubadours - Diamonds and Gasoline
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Wilco - Being There
Patty Griffin - American Kid |

04.23.18 | “bluegrass, country, americana.. what's the difference lol”
Well, Americana is more of an umbrella term for music that combines country with elements of contemporary folk, blues, rock, and other types of roots music. As a term it didn’t really emerge until the late 80s/early 90s so it often gets confused or combined with alt-country (which it often exists alongside but is not quite the same thing as). Bluegrass is much older and is based on a slightly different instrumental background, is usually faster and more improvisational than country and also incorporates more gospel influences a lot of the time. And country is, well, country. So I guess roughly you could consider bluegrass and Americana as subgenres of country, but it’s not quite that clean-cut. |

04.23.18 | lol Lucid I'll check it out. Like I said before, comparing her to Musgraves was mostly a shameless (and failed) attempt at getting people to check her out due to the popularity of Golden Hour. I just didn't want her album to be completely overlooked due to being released on the same day as such a huge album, but we're past that now, ha... GH is almost "too" poppy at times for me to jam back to back honestly, so I found Motel Bouquet to be a nice, chill break from the more upbeat nature of that album :D |

04.24.18 | Heres 10 random Country & Western Songs that are absolutely essentials if you haven't already heard them. (Note, this is actual country, not Alt Country, Pop Countyr, etc. Not that those suck. Just is what it is).
1. Country Boy Can Survive - Hank Jr - Best song ever
2. Midnight in Montgomery - Alan Jackson - An awesome ballad about Hank Sr's ghost
3. Cocaine Blues (Live at Folsom Prison) - Johnny Cash. - Best song ever
4. The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks - might be the best song ever
5. Coward of the County - Kenny Rogers - a Song about fighting rednecks
6. If Drinking Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will) - George Jones. All you really need to know about this song is it has the lyric "With the blood from my body, I could start my own still).
7. Poncho and Lefty - Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard - probably the best song ever
8. The Ride - David Allen Coe - Yet another song about Hank Sr's ghost

10. Killing Time - Clint Black - Because its about drinking |

04.29.18 | Thx for the additional recs Hans! I’m taking my time but I’ll get to those when I can . Added 8-11 to the list as well, all are very good |
theBoneyKing
04.29.18 | Good on you checking 11, it’s a beaut. I saw your soundoff - I’m glad Porchlight did it for you but if you still think the album is a bit too country for you you might try some of her later albums; she has actually gotten less and less straight country with each release and is now more in the realm of alt/indie rock, albeit still with country inflections. Plus, she has a new album out in June! |
theBoneyKing
04.29.18 | Also make sure you don’t overlook Hans’ recs, he’s right that those are much better examples of pure country than maybe anything I gave you, my taste admittedly runs more on the alt-country/Americana end of the spectrum so you’re gonna get that stuff from me (mostly) |
Atari
04.29.18 | so far I’m thinking I may prefer alt-country/Americana as well but I’ll give a fair shot to as much here as I can :]
And yeah I’ll be checking more Neko Case for sure |
