placeholder (it is early april, 2018)

in a shocking turn of events, i have been listening to music. here is the music that i have been listening to:
1Jakob
Solace

this is post-rock. it is good. the bass is earth-shattering, soul-shaking, loin-stirring, gratuitous-adjective-beckoning. the restraint in some of these crescendos is admirable and the story beats are eked out at points that catch the listener off guard.
2Tangents (AUS)
Stateless

this is experimental electronic with a jazz bent, i suppose. i think the form and the sounds used change every time you listen to it. it's quite sprawling, but it also jitters like its a spider stuck under a wine glass. i would rate this highly/10.
3Stiu Nu Stiu
Fake End

this is post-metal. i appreciate how heavy, how leaden, the negative space is here -- you can feel the collapse coming because you hear the ground shake first. the drumming is all rolling toms and the guitar tones seethe and sneer even when they're meant to be clean. whatshername's voice is stunning too. i don't know.
4Sophie Hutchings
Night Sky

this is modern classical. sophie does a lot with so little, often imbuing her compositions with the sounds of the quotidian (the jangle of nuts and bolts(?) in Half Hidden) to make it feel like she is soundtracking your life maybe. it adds a great deal of heft to her piano melodies and a great deal more to your day-to-day. i am leaning against a bus window, staring through sleets of rain (not really lol).
5Phantom Winter
Into Dark Science

this is doom metal. listen to track two, ripping halos from angels, if you're short on time. vocals are confronting in how tortured they are, as though whatshisdeal has come face-to-face with the murderer of a loved one. it's all consumed by a hot white rage. don't ask me why i've subjected myself to such a nightmare on repeated occasions.
6The Fun Years
Life-Sized Psychoses

this is ambient. it's also my ambien, currently. life-sized psychoses sort of forgets itself; it has ideas and then lets them run until they fizzle out naturally, too tired to carry on. the guitar on powerball annie is the best, you guys, and i forget it's there most of the time. i think this album sounds like a library.
7Dangers
Anger

this is hardcore. possibly my favourite album,
BUT ENOUGH ABOUT ME ALREADY
8Two Humans
Institute of Living

this is emo. it's for people who feel largely useless and it's really really good because it is absolutely nothing special. i wouldn't look twice at it if i passed it on the street.
9Teebs
E S T A R A

this is idm. it's very colourful and versatile electronic music that bends itself to fit your mood. a gold mine of oscillating synths and fun beats that sound like a tribal gathering of percussive instruments dancing around a campfire. for people who like things that are pretty without being meretricious.
10Jean Grae/Quelle Chris
Everything's Fine

this is hip-hop. deserves a spot for resonating in a way that should make me sad, but instead makes me laugh. the conceptual frame is unwavering and exceedingly well executed, while the guest spots (see: hannibal burress, nick offerman) fit perfectly within/without this miserable little world the two MCs have built for themselves.
