Where the hell is the conversation for this song? I am in dire need of fans to gush over this track with. Anyways, this is my 2nd favorite vocalless track and my favorite classical track of last year. The piano/synth mixing and note-playing emphasis here is unmatched and it's got insane atmosphere building. I can imagine this being a soundtrack to a scene to a beautiful, yet horrifying haunted house. Yeah, this is just an understated near-classic piece of artwork from this collaboration. |

BlazinBlitzer
04.03.18 | Hidden Orchestra - "Disquiet": It's a good track with excellent instrumentation and atmosphere variety, but I can't help but feel as if something's off with it and I'm thinking it's the production. There's nothing wrong with the production itself, but its consistently bombastic nature quarrels with some parts of the track, especially the calmer spots. It's from that that I feel the song isn't as unique as it might think it is. Like, I know it's different from anything I've heard before, but I've also heard this a million times in various soundtracks and other experimental albums.

The vocals and production are bad and while everything else is fairly passable, they hardly add much substance at all. I'm usually a fan of more subdued vocals but here the sleepy nature of the singer just seems to clash with the triumphant movement that the instrumentals create. The atmosphere is certainly impeccable enough to render it solid regardless. This is closer to Coldplay than noise rock though.

Sounds like the background music to an open world game set in the apocalyptic future. Very ambient. Not something I'd listen to by itself by choice, but it'd work well on a soundtrack.

Last 3 and a half minutes or so of this are stunning. Unfortunately pieces of the rest seem to be so bent on their earnest nature that it comes off as a bit melodramatic which is a qualm I often have with this genre so its probably just my taste. Still, some fantastic sections.

If you didn't already know this song before today, then you must've never heard any bossa nova before lol. This is the most famous piece in the entire genre. It's catchy and fun, but also mellow and sexy. I prefer tropicalia (which is this kind of music + psychedelic pop) honestly, but pure bossa nova is still so pleasant and this hits that mark in the best way.

Ichiko Aoba - “Imperial Smoke Town”: After a little time (not this much time, of course; procrastination has killed me this month), I've come to a conclusion. It does what it wants to do very well with beautiful guitar playing and surprisingly diverse vocal passages. This, however, is doomed with a case of trying to do too much with too little, and it starts showing especially towards the end. Very good track, though.

New Average: 3.37 (10 folks)

The Halo Benders - “Don't Touch My Bikini”: Interestingly boring.
3.0/5
New Average: 2.81 (10 folks)
Richard Hawley - “She Brings the Sunlight”: Actually good “stoner (I guess?)” rock. The guitar layering is completely mesmerizing and the keyboards are excellent sprinkles of sounds. Yet at the same time, all of that gets to be a little too much after 7 minutes. The vocalist is also a mixed bag only shining with the music in occasional glimpses. I think I can come back to this one, though, and that accomplishment isn't a pushover by any means.
3.8/5

The Bug - “Black Wasp”: If JustJoe-core was a thing, this would be it. This did nothing for me, though, so I guess this genre has a fairly wide range in quality. Also, The Bug and I haven't been getting along too well, probably because it keeps buzzing in my ear.
2.6/5

TV on the Radio - “Blind”: Here's an intriguing alt rock song with some... R&B vibes? And electronica? With a unique vocalist? Count me in, please.

05.02.18 | Kindo - “Romancing a Stranger”: I mean, it's your standard Kindo song, but the average Kindo is better than the average band so I still had fun.
3.6/5
New Average: 3.49 (9 folks)
Esbern Snare - “You've Changed”: You know, I like post rock with a little bit of balls, and this definitely has it with the atmosphere and influences it pulls off here, not to mention the great vocalist. However, I was wondering why it practically ends halfway through the track, but now I think it's because of the closer's consistency with the rest of the album. What I'm trying to say is that I bet it works a lot better as the album's closer than it does an individual listen.
3.1/5
New Average: 3.53 (8 folks)
Stan Getz - “The Girl from Ipanema”: Cool, cool jazzy stuff. I dig it.
3.9/5
New Average: 4.03 (8 folks)
Third Eye Blind - “Blinded”: Though it's not much, I like it as a fun nostalgia piece.
3.4/5
New Average: 3.18 (9 folks)
Xploding Plastix - “Funnybones & Lazylegs”: How does this type of drum production even happen? It sounds like the drums were recorded in a studio. Then it changes from a garage-sounding track to 90's trip hop instrumentals with horns and classic pianos. This is one of the most unpredictable songs I've heard in this competition and I'm loving it.
4.3/5
New Average: 3.86 (7 folks)
50 Cent - “Many Men (Wish Death)”: 50 Cent is an absolutely terrible vocalist, but the lyrics and the passable instrumentals try their darnedest to counteract it. They kinda succeed.
