Goblin's 18th Birthday List

Documenting what albums/artists/music are really important to me at this time in my life and what they mean to me.
1Nine Inch Nails
The Downward Spiral

NIN was the first band I ever got into, and even though its been 4 years, they're still my #1. Every single one of Trent's albums mean something special to me. This is not only my favorite NIN album, but my favorite album of all time. My mind was blown by how scathing and relatable the lyrics are, as well as the terrifying industrial textures that made the songs. But softer songs like A Warm Place & Hurt amazed me as well. Beauty and ugliness all into one. I've always had suicidal thoughts and this album really shows, in a raw way, how I feel. In a weird way, this album is kind of optimistic to me, seeing as how Trent is doing now. If he can get through this, I can get through what I'm experiencing. Btw, hyped for EP 3 coming out in June. My first and only concert I've been to is Riot Fest last year. I saw Ministry, New Order, then NIN and it was one of the best days of my life. Trent & Co put on an insane show, playing the best 2-3 songs off of every album. Magical.
2Type O Negative
October Rust

A band I got into right around a year ago, TON is an instantly lovable band. I actually decided to check them out from a Youtube comment and wow good thing I did. I put on Bloody Kisses and was blown away when the first riff started in Christian Woman. Then Black No 1 came on and the rest is history. I love TON because they knew how to make long, beautiful, atmospheric songs as well as shorter bangers. I've come to love all of their albums, and October Rust has to be my favorite. It has some shorter, more fun songs as well as the long, epic songs that they're known for. The Wolf Moon/Haunted ending is marvelous. TON is my go to band when I'm feeling sad about love or relationships or feeling some kind of heart-break/loss. But, they also have really funny/upbeat songs. Some of my best memories of TON are walking for hours at night around my town listening to Bloody Kisses & October Rust. RIP Peter Steele, there will never be another Type O Negative.
3Linkin Park
A Thousand Suns

I also started getting into LP about a year ago. I remember how everyone online was so upset over Heavy so I listened to the song and liked it a lot actually and I've always heard about LP so I decided to listen to the first few albums and One More Light when it eventually came out. Good memories of doing hard bike workouts outside during the Spring/early Summer in one of my favorite forest preserves and just jamming LP while I go hard. Then one day when my mom picked me up from work she told me how Chester killed himself and I couldn't believe it. From there I decided to listen to the rest of the albums and wow, I really enjoyed every single one. A Thousand Suns is my #1, a step ahead of Minutes To Midnight. ATS is a beautiful, heavy, cool album that gives me a sense of power and strength. This band always seemed to have passion, creativity, and made great, relatable hit songs and beautiful deep cuts that I'll always listen to.
4Death Grips
Exmilitary

Got into DG last summer. I always heard crazy stuff about the band so I put on the EP then Ex-Military. Beware made my mind explode with the eerie, droning beat, the manic vocals, and the unrelenting craziness of it all. I've come to appreciate all of DG's albums but nothing will top Ex-Military, just freaking insane, no holds barred art that really made an impression on me. Bangers and bangers of songs from these guys. Looking forward to Year of the Snitch.
5Senses Fail
Still Searching

Early last summer I put on Still Searching and the album hit so hard with it's lyrics and melodies. It had the relatable-ness of Linkin Park and the darkness/rawness of Nine Inch Nails, but with more normal instruments/songs that still rocked. Can't Be Saved blew me away the first time I heard it, and still does. Then I listened to If There Is Light It Will Find You, and it blew me away in a totally different way. The title track is one of the most epic, gut-churning songs I've ever heard. I'm going to listen to all of their albums soon, but haven't quite got there yet.
6Fear Factory
Obsolete

FF is quite a unique band to me. To mix in brutal, earth shattering riffs with catchy/fun choruses and melodies is something that not many bands can do. But that's FF's specialty. Resurrection, Descent, Shock, Edgecrusher are my favorite songs on Obsolete, and Demanufacture has many bangers and interesting songs as well. Good memories jamming these in late Spring last year.
7Harms Way (IL)
Posthuman

Harms Way is one of the first REALLY heavy bands that I got into, and they continue to be one of my favorite hardcore bands. Their latest album is fantastic imo so you should go check it out.
8M83
Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

I love this album because it has upbeat bangers, ambient suites, tear-inducing sad songs, and everything in between that works perfectly for this journey of an album.
9My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

This taught me that music doesn't have to be a punch in the face to get my attention and make me fall in love with it. Every song on here makes me feel so warm, and brings back nostalgia for...I don't even know - something, someone, someplace you can't quite define it, but it's beautiful and addicting.
10Slint
Spiderland

I will never understand how this album always manages to hypnotize me and pull me into another world for 40 minutes. The spoken word vocals, eerie bass and guitars, and unsettling atmosphere makes this an enigma of an album. Good Morning Captain is one of the best album closers ever.
