[electronic, dancepunk]
Before their newest album comes out this month, here is the first single and one that's been plaguing my mind ever since its release. It is catchy in a rather unconventional way. No grand explosion, no vocal range, no surprising instrumental collision, nothing outstandingly significant in any way, except it is just so goddamn fun and the chorus is easily one of my favourites of the year so far. |

02.27.18 | I'll be back in an hour or so, hopefully to update a lot |

02.27.18 | "Signal to Noise" by Peter Gabriel (from Up)
A cosmic, massive, terrifying, and beautiful epic from Peter Gabriel, and one of the best songs from one of my favorite albums. I guess I could see why someone wouldn't dig this, but I can't escape the awesomeness and pure size of it.

02.27.18 | Umphrey's McGee - "Plunger"
I wanted to rec some good jam rock that I used to listen to for their famous drumming performances. It was between this and "Elephant Ghost" by C2B3, but I ultimately went with this track because it's much more organized and I think the lyrics are really solid. Not to mention that it one of the best jam rock album openers ever. The song also ends up taking a massive and risky genre shift in the second half that I think pays off 100%. Spoiler alert: It's complete with castinets and congas.

03.02.18 | Vitalism - Yamí Obi rating:
One thing I could never hold against djent and prog-metal in general is the instrumental palette and finesse. As expected, the instrumental range and the range of skills on here is impressive. But a much more intriguing aspect of the genre is how it manages every single time and without amiss shoot itself into the head and fall into the already prepared grave it dug itself up. In that, that instrumentation always ends up wasted on the most soul-deadening song-writing (or lack thereof), sterilised production and the lack of coherence regarding the instrumental passages separately (in that, they just often sound like there are two completely separate songs from absolutely different genres playing at the same time). No, thank you.
1.5 |
DinosaurJones
03.02.18 | Haha, I figured I would. Djent is a pretty disdained genre. I don't even like it much myself, I just really dug this song in particular. |

Kompys2000
03.02.18 | I'm really not seeing the hate for Yami Obi- I think it's a great little tune with a lot of personality, reminded me a lot of AaL (possibly because that's the only djenty band I listen to). The song's djent elements are by far its weakest aspect, and as with a lot of super-technical music it feels rather sterile and calculated (especially in the production), but still, not a bad song by any means.

03.03.18 | Datarock - "Laugh in the Face of Darkness": It's alright, but the vocals are ear-bleedingly bad and I couldn't tell whether it was the singer or the vocal production. Then I realized it was both. It's a shame, too, because I was thinking that there was a little bit of subtle satire and self-awareness occurring in the songwriting, so the concept was there. However, much of a track's quality is execution, and that was not too well done, I'm afraid.

Not only is this a compositional beauty, but it breaks several genre conventions within its runtime without ever feeling disjointed or confused and that is nothing short of fantastic. Laugh in the Face of Death: So uncool it actually kinda hurt. 2.8 - AVG: 27.3/7=3.03 (7 votes)
Down Low (Nobody Has to Know): Woah. I liked this way way more than I should’ve but that was buttery smooth in just the right ways. 3.9 - AVG: 21.4/7=3.06 (7 votes)
Kaleidoscope: Yeah this was pretty awesome, but almost off-puttingly so in a strange way. 4.2
Plunger: This was a lot of fun, but I honestly didn’t really dig the first half much. I loved the crossover but as much as I enjoyed it, I still probably won’t find myself coming back to it. 3.8 |

03.07.18 | Signal to Noise- 4.0
Amazing song with an even better atmosphere. The lyrics aren't perfect, the ending devolved a bit when it went into the orchestral section, and the genesisms pop up around the 4:30 mark which is good or bad depending on how you feel about Genesis. While that sounds like I was complaining a bunch, those are more just minor nit-picks of an otherwise awesome song. |
neekafat
03.07.18 | But the orchestra section is the best part ): |
BlazinBlitzer
03.07.18 | Peter Gabriel - “Signal to Noise”: Is this Peter Gabriel or Yoko Ono? Their differences are beginning to lessen here. Nonetheless, it’s a powerful and frankly abrasive track and hits the right spots in the majority areas but not so much in others. This song’s kinda similar to an assorted bag of jellybeans. Most flavors have a good taste but some of them, like the buttered popcorn or toasted marshmallow, are like eating rabbit droppings.

03.07.18 | "Signal to Noise"
This is so early 2000s, but it's not bad at all. Actually it held my attention for it's entirety. Could even grow on me. Those ending strings hammered in the positive score too. 4.2/5 |

03.08.18 | Los Campesinos! - "A Slow, Slow Death": I really don't care for the way this song strips back all of the mystery of the ending by showing everything 2 minutes in, but RadicalEd is absolutely right when he says that it sounds like a 2007 track. That vibe is strong here, and it compliments the melodies and production very well.

3.2/5 |

"Ritual Pt. 2": Man those opening horns sounded wayyyy too much like that shitty song on Sufjan's debut. You know the one I mean. On one hand I thought this was really rad, but the vocals did not mesh well at all with me and half the time I thought the song was kinda annoying. So idk, I guess a 3.1? |

03.13.18 | "Datarock - "Laugh in the Face of Darkness": It's alright, but the vocals are ear-bleedingly bad and I couldn't tell whether it was the singer or the vocal production. Then I realized it was both. It's a shame, too, because I was thinking that there was a little bit of subtle satire and self-awareness occurring in the songwriting, so the concept was there. However, much of a track's quality is execution, and that was not too well done, I'm afraid.

I really wanted to like this, and I did mostly, but I had a couple issues with it. I didn't think the length was justified with enough interesting ideas, but my major gripe is that the chorus chanting the word "zombie" really distracted from the song for me. The were too up front in the mix, and (although I'm sure this was intentional and is a valid choice, I am not a fan) they refused to stay on beat, rushing the second syllable most of the time, which drove me nuts. |

Ritual Pt. 2
I’ve heard some material from this group before and this carries over the chaotic vibrancy that I enjoy from their sound. Solid stuff for sure.
4.0
Singularity
Used to jam this group back in the day but honestly my expectations for this were pretty low. The track however makes good use of progression and has a degree of subtlety to it which is pretty rare for them. It definitely is a bit melodramatic though.
3.4
Ten to Ten
First time hearing this group despite the hype I’ve heard over them. Unfortunately the same thing that derails Glassjaw for me derails this as well. The vocals are just a big no-no which is a shame because the instrumentals are certainly competent.

Zombie
I love the way in which this builds with an unsettling tone in the Afrobeat style I’ve begun to really love. I don’t think the length is entirely justified but nor do I feel that it detracts in any way. Very impressive track that is without a doubt enhanced by the context.
4.4
29.8/8=3.72
One Crown
The sax is nice for sure but the flow doesn’t seem impressive at all to me. Would of just preferred the instrumental truth be told.
2.8
New Mistake
It’s a nice track for sure. A solid mix of 90s rock and a bit of a retro surfy vibe. A timeless sounding track that is unfortunately a bit unmemorable to me as well.
3.7
The Message
You know I quite dig the beat. Sure the “message” is a bit cringey but I really don’t hate this.
3.0
Kobenhavn
This was great! Certainly on the inoffensive side of things but it had a degree of sincerity to it which may have been aided truth be told by fact that I don’t know what the words are. Irregardless the melody is pleasant and the structure is solid as well.
3.9
Into The Storm
Wowzers this it’s been a long time since I’ve deplored a song this much on first listen. I was kinda stoked for a bandcamp track as well.

03.23.18 | * Typhoon -- "Empiricist" ~ [4.2] |
BlazinBlitzer
03.23.18 | Typhoon - "Empiricist": Oh boy, there's a lot to unpack here. First off, I really enjoyed this record and I think it makes a worthy representative for January 2018's music. However, "Empiricist" was far from a highlight for me at the time. It meandered a lot compared to the previous tracks and it's placement on the album felt extremely awkward. My opinion on "Empiricist" has changed since then. Although I still think the ending is a bit of a mess and the vocals are fairly underwhelming, there's an impressive amount of great factors that the listener has to dig pretty deep into to fully understand. The greatest of those factors is song's beautiful compliance between the songwriting and totally depressing lyrics. |
BlazinBlitzer
03.23.18 | However, "Ariadne" > this.

03.23.18 | Typhoon - Empiricist
I am more or less on the fence with this entire album still. I will keep my over all 4 ranking, but I rate it as a full experience. Taken out of the full album's context, Offerings' songs are rather glib, unfortunately. And it is no different for this overlong piece. A nice instrumentation and an overall pleasant atmosphere did drab the song out of the muddy waters, but it still works better with all the other cuts supporting it.

03.24.18 | * And Also The Trees -- "Bloodline" ~ [4.1] |
BlazinBlitzer
03.24.18 | I read that as "That man sounded pretentious." at first and I was like "U wot m8?" |
BlazinBlitzer
03.24.18 | And Also the Trees - "Bloodline": I will admit that this is indeed cool and enchanting, but the chorus could've seriously used an emphasized "umph" to it. The production keeps at a calm and reserved mix throughout the entire track, but I wanted it to step out of its comfort zone at least a couple times here. Eh, it's still an instrumental and lyrical treat anyways.
3.6/5 |

03.28.18 | Elephant Stone - "A Silent Moment": Yeah, this is actually pretty sweet. It's the good half of the 90's if I've ever heard anything like it and I really like the track's bold, yet smooth ambitions. I didn't care for a couple of things here, though. First, the vocals that kick off the second half feel hilariously out of place and overprocessed until the rest of the instruments come in. Also, I wished there was a little more foreign influence other than that found in the vocals and percussion. An Arabic-sounding guitar or keyboard would've sounded great here. However, I still like what I got.

@skoopy Ayy, I’m currently in my Senior year! |
neekafat
03.30.18 | Gotta remember to start April lmao |

03.30.18 | Ya got 2 days. You can still keep up here. Dewinged on the other hand |

03.30.18 | Kenn Nardi - “A Little Light”: 4.0
Pretty awesome tune, not gonna lie. Don’t really hear the thrash, but I also don’t really care. Could totally see why some wouldn’t dig this though, it is a bit cheesy at times (not that that bothers me!)
AVG: 26.4/8=3.30 (8 votes)
The Bug - “Skeng”: 4.0
Didn’t think this’d be my thing but it’s super goddamn funky. Nothing like anything I’ve ever heard before and I love it.
AVG: 24.4/7=3.49 (7 votes)
Elephant Stone - “A Silent Moment”: 4.1
Fucking awesome aside for when the vocalist tries to hard to make it sound like The Beatles.
AVG: 25.5/7=3.64 (7 votes)
Boards of Canada - “Left Side Drive”: 3.3
Ye that was cool for about a minute.
AVG: 20.3/6=3.38 (6 votes)
Animal Collective - “What Would I Want? Sky”: 3.5
Ye that was cool for about a minute. [2] Still interesting though.
AVG: 17.7/5=3.54 (5 votes)
Leonard Cohen - “Suzanne”: 3.6
This was pretty damn nice but didn’t really convince me to check this album out more which is a shame cuz I already did.
Sorry I voted early but I'm an asshole and won't do it tomorrow probably |
Metalrain
03.30.18 | Gonna try to to catch up tonight, since I'm so far behind. Let's see how far I get. |
Metalrain
03.30.18 | Lobster Quadrile: This was really alright and thats about it. 3.3
AVG: 31/9=3.44 (9 votes)
Empircist: What a great song, Indie Rock done right. 4.0
AVG: 32.1/8=4.01 (8 votes)
Bloodline: Kind of weird going from the chorus to the verse again, but I love the atmopshere on this. 3.7
AVG: 29.4/8=3.67 (8 votes)
Trail of Fire: Instrumently impressive, but a snooze fest for some parts. 3.3
AVG: 25.7/8=3.21 (8 votes)
Skeng: Starts of really good, but then it just gets tiring to listen too after a while. 2.7
AVG: 28.1/8=3.51 (8 votes)
A Silent Moment: Really cool for the most part, kinda reminded me of Sgt Pepper in some parts. 3.5
AVG: 24.9/6=3.55 (7 votes)
Left Side Drive: Wears off real quick after the first minute. 2.7
AVG: 23/7=3.28 (7 votes)
What Would I Want? Sky: Man, these kind of sings are not for me I guess. Though this one was a little better than the last one. 3.0
AVG: 20.7/6=3.45 (6 votes) |

03.31.18 | "What Would I Want? Sky"
Animal Collective is the kind of band that uses the a right formula to solve the wrong problem. In theory they should be one of my favorite bands, but wow do I hate most songs I hear by them. 2/5 |
JustJoe.
03.31.18 | * Leonard Cohen -- "Suzanne" ~ [4.0] |
bgillesp
03.31.18 | Suzanne- 4.5 Amazing song but not the best on the record to me |
bgillesp
03.31.18 | Update and bump again. I appreciate everyone who helped out by calculating averages for me (even when your math was off several times Metalrain, haha) |
Metalrain
03.31.18 | One day I'll learn how to use that shitty windows calculator, but yesterday was not that day. |
Metalrain
03.31.18 | But besides my horrible math skills,
Suzanne: Actually never heard much of Cohen, so this was a nice suprise. Amazing song, will check the album. 4.0
|
bgillesp
03.31.18 | Haha, it's all good (: |
BlazinBlitzer
03.31.18 | Leonard Cohen - "Suzanne": Oh, come on. You're not supposed to submit songs that objectively good in this, right?
4.4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.31.18 | bgill, you missed my Animal Collective rating |
BlazinBlitzer
03.31.18 | I think it's like a 3.24 now. Screw you and your righteous honesty! |
ArsMoriendi
03.31.18 | "Suzanne"
I already know this song, but I'll re-listen to it. I'm a sucker for strings laid over other genres. 4.1/5 |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | Sorry Ars. You're always hiding your ratings in the bottom right corner where I don't read, haha |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | Final bump. This ended up wrapping up nicely I think. On to April!! |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | Gonna check albums 2,5,7,8,11,13,15,17,21,26,27,29. Really good month for me compared to last. Checking 5 now since that song was so gosh darn entrancing |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | 2,5,7, and 8 down. Unfortunately your recs were all the best songs on the album, although Peter Gabriel's held up and Arc Iris remained very good |
neekafat
04.01.18 | Glad you dug PG bgill, that's my favorite track as well but the rest of the album is gorgeous and awesome in different ways c: |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | I envy such adventurous listening-initiative. |

04.01.18 | I can't sleep in vehicles. It's 3am, and I am almost done with my bus ride from Florida to NC. I had nothing else to do (: |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | That's usually the time where I rest my eyes & contemplate what it is I am, in fact, running from.
Blocks. It's probably the blocks. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | Oh man I always fall asleep in buses, it's the vibrations and hum |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | I remember when I was in 8th grade, we were returning home from a class trip. The geniuses in charge decided that this was the perfect time to hand out high school acceptance letters to everyone.
I swear I've never heard so much crying & swearing in my life. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | Lmao that sounds perfectly traumatic |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | It absolutely was & in such an enclosed area. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | Why would they even do that |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | I feel like they were just so certain of the academic prowess & potential of their students that they didn't realize how many other schools didn't want to have them.
Or maybe it was due to how many places some of my classmates applied. Just made it that much more apparent when you get four or five rejections. |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | You had to apply to high school? |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | They were private high schools, so yeah. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | Oh weird |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | I'd been in public school up till 7th grade & I moved a lot, so it was like 6 total schools. The idea of having to apply to a [high] school was a strange thing for me as well. District zoning was all I knew. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | The only private school I've gone to is kindergarten and my college (which is barely private since it's massive but yknow) |
Papa Universe
04.01.18 | I've gone to school privately. Does that count? |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | Not if you make it public it doesn't! |
Papa Universe
04.01.18 | damn it! well, there goes my elitism |
neekafat
04.01.18 | I've played with my privates in school, does that count? |
Papa Universe
04.01.18 | My school had privatised lunches. |
JustJoe.
04.01.18 | I'm going to my safe place now. |
neekafat
04.01.18 | I'm gonna get banned |
Papa Universe
04.01.18 | bgil would never report us. he a good boi |

bgillesp
04.01.18 | 11,15,17,27 down |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | And yeah I'll get some stats done this week. Should I do it here or a separate list? Y'all vote |
bgillesp
04.01.18 | And I have jammed all of the albums I was interested in except 13 cuz I can't find a stream. That was fun. |
Papa Universe

04.01.18 | I've been doing it on the same list but it's up to you |
Egarran
04.02.18 | Not too late I hope. I know yall been waitin ankshusly for mah ratings.
Left Side Drive - The most boring thing I ever heard. *reads the comments* Oh I'm clearly missing something. Does the youtube link miss a channel or something? 2/5
What would I want? Sky - In theory they should be one of my favorite bands, but wow do I hate most songs I hear by them[2]. 2.4/5
Suzanne - I grew up with this song, so this tickles that precious memory center. Unfortunately I found out later that many annoying people (teenage girls and men over 50) think his lyrics are the pinnacle of human culture. 4/5 |
Papa Universe
04.02.18 | "teenage girls and men over 50"
