Every year I ask local patrons to choose me a genre of my disliking (various levels thereof) and for the year afterwards I will closely observe all the newcoming releases that genre has to offer, in order to attempt to sway me into liking it or tolerating it somewhat more. This year it is Ambient, hence my next stop on this journey. I cannot say that Endurance floored me with some kind of atmospheric beauty, but it certainly piqued my interest enough for me to carry on listening to its staggering runtime. If anything positive can be said about it, it definitely engulfs you with calm and sense of satisfaction, as ambient music -to my knowledge- should. Certainly not a revolutionary record, it still holds up well and as a means of seeking out a calming musical shelter, it serves well. 4

Frippertronics 03.05.18	It's a lot of very different albums, although if I were to suggest the next step after this to go listen to Yellow Magic Orchestra's stuff and Ryuichi's B-2 Unit and Left Handed Dream For stuff like Async, his collaborations with Alva Noto as well as his works with Taylor Deupree will suffice although I personally feel like Async is and will be a unique record in his catalog.

I deeply enjoyed the atmosphere and some of the song-writing and arrangement, but the production was a little too off-note and drowned some of the grander musical moments. Highly enjoyable nonetheless. 4.4

Indeed, I did not expect the guitar solos, but they don't change the fact that the album overall is far from an essential listen. 3.3
Papa Universe 04.10.18	17: The Collection - Ars Moriendi: Admittedly a bombastic Collection (heh) of songs with some incredibly catchy and pleasant hooks and instrumental palette. However, the album ends up being slightly indulgent with its runtime, where it eventually overstays its welcome. You just don't need 13 songs that have the same thing to offer, no matter how ambitious and explosive. 3.7

Papa Universe 04.30.18	30: Blood - O Agios Pethane: Oh boy, the atmosphere here is so dense it's tangible. If the intro doesn't make you feel like in preparation for some Lord of the Rings battle, then only an orc-cosplayer stabbing you might. I do wish the rest of the album was as epic and overwhelming. It is still a fairly decent collection of enjoyable grind with some decent tunage every now and then, but nothin particularly special. 3.3

Still, perhaps my lack of experience with the style and therefore also lack of patience is what kept me from actually truly, fully enjoying it. 3.5

Almost every song here simply managed to crawl its way up my spine and progress to a point that every significant issue I could have possibly had with it just poof diappeared. 4.4 14: Stephan Micus - Implosions: A somewhat patience-testing album, but in the right mood, in the right setting, in the right situation, everything just snap clicks. 3.9

So sitting through 15 tracks of this album tailor-made for the fans was quite a tiring experience. But I went away as intrigued as ever. I feel as though all teh essential parts of their work were exposed to me and I now am a few points higher in my knowledge of just what they might be. 4

It got so ridiculous that even if a cymbal as much as gonged ever so louder than before it threw me out of the trance that the rest of the album put me into. It is the background music to some surreal David Lynch-ian arthouse film about paranoia and isolation. Yeesh. 3.5

There are a lot of catchy and intriguingly progressing tracks here and I ended up having a great time, even if the album overall hardly presents anything above just "good time vibes" and danceable tunes. 3.5

So I'm now describing that. It is, I believe, what drove me off the ambient music in the first place: uneventful. I just can't pen down what am I supposed to listen for. It is the very definition of background music, even if as such it is acceptable. 3.0
