Assemblage
02.13.18 | rec's for preferences if this were to continue, such as keeping the albums within the same year, or a certain commonality between two contenders like sophomore releases or keeping the matchup between specific subgenres, are welcome. |
Demon of the Fall
02.13.18 | Onward. Admittedly I just don’t get Effigy. |
Assemblage
02.13.18 | I think Suffocation's vocals were the biggest separation in terms of style at the time, but that might just be me. Effigy is a special release I think especially in 91, and Pierced from Within is straight rifffs so their heavyweight status is not without merit. The first four Suffo albums are real solid but I haven't listened passed that. |
Rowhaus
02.13.18 | Golg |
Assemblage
02.13.18 | Daaaaang I know there's Effigy lovers somewhere around here lol, or are they already grinded to pieces. |
DungeonBoy
02.13.18 | We should get Mark McGrath to weigh in on this
http://www.metalinjection.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/mark-mcgrath-suffocation.jpg |
Assemblage
02.13.18 | Lol |
TheSpirit
02.13.18 | I think Incantation managed to keep their legacy intact a bit better than Suffo, which effects people's opinioins regarding their older material They've released the same amount of classic albums as Suffo and then some pretty good ones even after that. Not to mention they've influenced a more interesting sect of death metal. Suffo is great, but goddamn, they've inspired some shit bands. |
DikkoZinner
02.13.18 | OtG |
hexfix93
02.13.18 | Effigy by far. Incantation might be a bit more consistent overall, although I think post-reunion Suffocation gets a bit too much flak. I've always been a fan of Souls to Deny and Pinnacle of Bedlam, even if they're not as good as their early records. But as far as Suffocation's classic records vs Incantation's, I much prefer Suffocation. |
Elynna
02.13.18 | I would pick Golgotha, Nazarene and Diabolical Conquest over Effigy |
JayEnder
02.13.18 | Golgotha for sure. Much more my thing. That and Mortal Throne of Nazarene destroy Effigy. Pierced fucks Effigy too imo. |
DikkoZinner
02.13.18 | I would pick Golgotha, Nazarene and Diabolical Conquest over Effigy[2] |
DikkoZinner
02.13.18 | Nothing against suffo but early Incantation just on another level |
Rowhaus
02.13.18 | I'd put Effigy just above Throne but it's close |
Maco097
02.13.18 | Golgotha easily |
combustion07
02.13.18 | Effigy for me. Both rule though. Pierce and Mortal Throne are my favorites from these two |
BlackwaterPork
02.13.18 | Onward |
Assemblage
02.14.18 | Pretty surprised by the unanimous opinion, I thought Effigy might have had more of an edge on this.
As far as a favorite of the two, I would go with Effigy at this point. I love Incantation and all, and Onward to Golgotha is definitely more in the style of dm that I like, but in terms of which album was the bigger risk to pull off as a debut as well as the sheer craziness on Effigy that still pounds face to this day, Effigy wins it for me. Onward is like something I would put on after Effigy to chill. Both incredible though, no disrespect |
Assemblage
02.14.18 | Onward to Golgotha favorite tracks: Blasphemous Cremation, Eternal Torture
Effigy of the Forgotten favorite tracks: actually really hard to choose... Infecting the Crypts of course, Seeds of the Suffering, Jesus Wept |
Inveigh
02.14.18 | pretty close call on these albums, but Mortal Throne of Nazarene is better than Golgotha imo |
Assemblage
02.14.18 | Yeah, I like Mortal Throne of Nazarene a lot more than Golgotha actually. |
Inveigh
02.14.18 | hell yeah
Effigy is my favorite Suffo LP, but Human Waste is my favorite release of theirs |
DarkSideOfLucca
02.14.18 | Effigy
Definitely |
Inveigh
02.14.18 | Mike Smith man, dude rules |
Assemblage
02.14.18 | Human Waste is sweeee. |
hikingmetalpunk
02.16.18 | better question would be onward vs close to a world below |
Hawks
02.16.18 | Fuck both are top 5 dm but Effigy is a tad better for me. |
Assemblage
02.16.18 | Idk about you guys but just looking at the album cover for Effigy gives that feel of a classic record. Such a good depiction of the carnage that ensues. |
Assemblage
02.16.18 | Gonna try and do another one of these tonight. I already have something in mind for Close to a World Below, but we'll see, kinda wanted to work my way up to it. |
Demon of the Fall
02.16.18 | CtaWB vs None So Vile? Could work. |
Demon of the Fall
02.16.18 | Or do you want the years closer together? That’s a tough one. |
Assemblage
02.16.18 | Yeah I haven't really gotten suggestions yet on what would be preferred, but I was assuming keeping the years pretty close so it's more fair. Right now it's just pretty much "this superb dm album vs this one", lol. |
Assemblage
02.16.18 | Maybe just work my way up the years I guess haha |
InFlamesWeThrash666
02.16.18 | Not a fan of Suffocation so |
Spacesh1p
02.16.18 | CtaWB vs None So Vile? Easy choice |
Spacesh1p
02.16.18 | CtaWB isn't even the best Immo and it wins easily. |
JayEnder
02.16.18 | What's the best Immo if CtaWB isn't? o-o |
JayEnder
02.16.18 | Here In After is close. |
Deathconscious
02.16.18 | "I think Suffocation's vocals were the biggest separation in terms of style at the time"
Not at all man, their songwriting styles were/are very different.
Anyways, i couldnt choose one over the other. I love them both for different reasons. Both are god tier death metal albums. |
hexfix93
02.16.18 | "What's the best Immo if CtaWB isn't? o-o"
Here in After is best Immolation imo. |
Spacesh1p
02.16.18 | Hex is correct, Here in After is the best Immo. |
Assemblage
02.16.18 | At least you didn't say Unholy Cult |
JayEnder
02.16.18 | Yeah Assemblage I was worried too aha. I love Here In After, but Unholy Cult never clicked with me. Neither did Failures For Gods. I lol at that drum tone every time |
hikingmetalpunk
02.17.18 | immo vs autopsy |
Assemblage
02.17.18 | I guess you could say UC never clicked for me either, but at this point I'm not sure it would. Something about it puts me off for some reason and I can't really engage with it. I thought I was the only one here who felt that way tbh. |
Assemblage
02.17.18 | Autopsy hmmm... gots an idea. |
StarlessCore
02.17.18 | Incantation is the more consistent band but effigy whipes their discog so |
StarlessCore
02.17.18 | Also the general outlook on unholy cult is freaking revolting. Opener is better than any song on here in after
|
Assemblage
02.17.18 | Nah, the first four on Here in After stack up to the best of their discography man. |
StarlessCore
02.17.18 | That's basically true, but means nothing because of martyrs and men probably their best song for me, those they are the rare band where the best could be like 5-10 songs |
StarlessCore
02.17.18 | Eh alright theres a few that contend that may be better but damn all fans who don't consider that their most overlooked song |
Deathconscious
02.17.18 | I was on the CTAWB train for the longest time, but more recently ive begun to think of HIA as their best. |
Astral Abortis
02.17.18 | Effigy duh |
Assemblage
02.17.18 | "Not at all man, their songwriting styles were/are very different."
Yeah, definitely agreed. Just for me I know the vocals were what initially made it harder for me to get into as opposed to anything musically since I was used to the traditional style osdm vocals for so long. |
EyesWideShut
02.17.18 | Onward To Golgotha |
Donchivo
02.17.18 | Suffocation is the better band overall but between these two choices I go with
Onwards!! |
Hawks
02.17.18 | I'd take Incantation overall for sure but both have multiple classic records. |
hikingmetalpunk
02.17.18 | onward |
SIIMBOLIC
02.17.18 | effigy 4.7
Golgotha 4.5

ShadowRemains
02.17.18 | golgotha |
Sinternet
02.17.18 | effigy easy tbh |
DarkSideOfLucca

Not even close for me |
hexfix93
02.17.18 | Motherfucking EFFIGY
Not even close for me [2] |
ShadowRemains
02.18.18 | "Also the general outlook on unholy cult is freaking revolting. Opener is better than any song on here in after"
lol |
ThyCrossAwaits
02.21.18 | This should’ve been Effigy |
Madbutcher3
02.21.18 | Effigy tbh |
Assemblage
02.21.18 | I'll keep updating as long as there are votes! |
hansoloshotfirst
02.21.18 | yeah, Effigy. |
PortraitsOfDecay
02.21.18 | Effigy hands down, I'll admit I've only listened to either album a handful of times but Golgotha is just draining to listen to for me. It's weird cause you'd think all the tempo changes would make it more engaging |
zaruyache
02.21.18 | suffocation > |
Assemblage
02.21.18 | Aaaaaand...
we're tied! |
Assemblage
04.07.18 | Obligatory bump since this is still tied as far as I can tell. |
SIIMBOLIC
04.07.18 | fuuuck
effigy by a cunt hair |
Assemblage
04.07.18 | Lol, SIIM, pretty sure I got your vote from earlier. There's a lot of comments but some are double votes that I had to skip over. But if someone wants to double check behind me that's cool. 14 each is too low!! |
Dedes
04.07.18 | Hmm, imma go Onward with this one. Love my death doom yo |
combustion07
04.07.18 | Effigy |
