Demon of the Fall
02.11.18 | Not sure how you can have 3 x more 4.5s than 3s. Needs reconfiguring. |

02.11.18 | People rate in different ways. |
Demon of the Fall
02.11.18 | Just my take but if you slap 4.5s on that many albums you have nowhere to go, it’s very restrictive. Each to their own of course. |
Get Low
02.11.18 | Your objectivity percentage is horrible. 3.5 rating should be your go-to, and there should not be that many 4.5s. |
Assemblage
02.11.18 | Yeah all true. My objectivity is one of the worst I've seen, but I've been trying to get it up by branching out a little more and rating stuff that isn't just "automatically" liked by me. I definitely want to go through and fine tune it a lot more.
I don't know if it's bad, but I tend to rate albums a certain score for different reasons and to me a score like 4.5 is variable depending on the artist or the album's context and such. Sometimes I'll give something a 4 because I don't see it being any less than a 4, or by the same token, I could give it a 4 because that would be the highest rating I see for that album. Or when I'm stuck I'll just go by the "excellent" or "great" denomination instead. Either way, I agree my process needs work. I hope me explaining that doesn't make me like one of the worst users on here... it's also why I started doing ranking lists because it's easier to see in my mind, even though I pick the most generic bands possible. But yeah, this list is basically a reminder that I have work I need to do. |
Demon of the Fall
02.11.18 | A major part of the issue is a rather large percentage of users scoff at 3.5s for well regarded albums, they forget it means ‘great’ & not everyone will see things the same, in what world is ‘great’ a negative?
That’s not a criticism of yourself, more about the user-base. |
bgillesp
02.11.18 | To me a rating of 3 means okay and 3.5 means good. 4.0 is great, 4.5 is excellent, and 5 is perfect/near perfect. That's just how I end up feeling about my ratings so obviously that's got some rating inflation as to what was "intended" on the site, but I see it as appropriate for how I enjoy music so I don't care. |
bgillesp
02.11.18 | 2.5 is not good, 2.0 is bad, 1.5 is very bad, 1.0 is either pure sellout trash or not even music. As an elaboration of my above comment |
CaimanJesus
02.11.18 | Lmao who gives a shit about objectivity, let the dude rate albums what he wants to |
Trophycase
02.11.18 | Problem is there is bias in selecting which music you listen to, as new listens are almost always skewed towards stuff with better ratings (most people don't intentionally listen to stuff they will dislike). So your rating system could be calibrated with a really awful album at the bottom, and a really awesome album at the top, then letting average be the midpoint of those two, and still have a positive skew while maintaining an objective rating. But there are other factors like ratings inflation, groupthink, and reporting bias that skew ratings more positive than they should be as well (also this site basically doesn't let you rank 1/10, so the scale is also translated slightly from the typical one)
That being said your skew is pretty far in the positive zone. |

Trophycase
02.11.18 | @Demon I agree with that point, I used to feel the same thing a bit but I found that converting the 5 scale to the 10 scale made 3.5 feel much higher |
Assemblage
02.11.18 | Right, that's a good point. I often fall into thinking a 3.5 is more negative than it is when I don't consider the "great" aspect, and I think I am more likely to rate an album a 3.5 if I like it significantly less than other works as opposed to dropping it to average or poor. I think on the whole a lot of my ratings are .5 higher than the norm, but I feel more comfortable giving something a little higher of a rating than lower for some reason. I do have many albums where I will firmly stick to the rating as it is though. A lot of my 4.5's are "hard 4.5's" meaning the majority I think are really that good. The boundary that is needed to cross from 4.5 to 5 to me is larger than 4 to 4.5 if that makes sense, so that explains why a lot of my ratings settle there. |
bgillesp
02.11.18 | I think my ratings tend to have a slight positive skew due to the fact that I based my ratings on the Sputnik rating language (the words linked to the ratings), but I don't see linguistically a justification to separate great-classic into 4 different ratings. Again, not that it matters cuz you should just rate whatever way you want |

02.11.18 | Nice explanation Trophycase! |

02.11.18 | As an example, all the albums on this list I have at a 4 or 4.5 which I feel is pretty standard for those album averages, though I might bump Cold Cell down a peg, but when you take into consideration this is the vast majority of my albums then yeah there is definitely an objective skew there which I would like to somewhat correct personally. I appreciate the feedback as always! |
