| Seeing Machine Head Tonight...
... and I'm pretty excited. Despite the fact that Robb Flynn has become some odd parody of himself and their new album is garbage, Burn My Eyes and The Blackened are bonafide classics in my mind and the rest of their discography ain't too shabby either (excluding Supercharger, surprisingly including The Burning Red.) I've kind of glazed over Unto the Locust and Bloodstone and Diamonds but hopefully that material is up to par (and judging by the ratings around here, it seems like it is.) Finally, they're closing with "Halo" which is top 3 MH for me, so I'm super hype to finally, after 10 years, hear it in a live setting. List is top 10 Machine Head songs. | | 1 | | Machine Head Burn My Eyes
"Old" - **real time thought after literally just looking at the setlist for tonight** WTF! THEY AREN'T PLAYING THIS? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE??? Well, ruffled feathers aside, I don't care how generic it is, this song is a fucking classic. That opening riff should be listed as destructive force and for me, it is the encapsulation of the groove metal sound. Perfect. | | 2 | | Machine Head Burn My Eyes
"Block" - This song reminds me a lot of "Old", which is (obviously) not terrible. It's another song with a lug-headed riff that gets me in the mood to pulverize everything around me. | | 3 | | Machine Head The Blackening
"Halo" - The Blackening was "my" Machine Head album (aka first MH record that came out after I started listening to heavier music) and I still find "Halo" to be its pinnacle moment. It really shows off how dynamic Machine Head were at this time, and there really is no better example of the progressive groove metal sound they were curating. | | 4 | | Machine Head Burn My Eyes
"Davidian" - You know, to this day I can still never say the name of the song right the first time. David-Ian? Whatever. If you clicked on this list, you already know what this song is about. | | 5 | | Machine Head Through the Ashes of Empires
"Imperium" - Acting as a fortune teller of sorts, this song predicated the route Machine Head would take for the next 10 years of their career. | | 6 | | Machine Head The Burning Red
"The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears" - I realize how embarrassing this is, but I love how ignorant and ridiculous this song is. Give me a good groove, and I'll basically sing-along to anything. This is proof of that. | | 7 | | Machine Head The More Things Change...
"Bay of Pigs"- I dig the groove metal meets hardcore sound here. That's it really. | | 8 | | Machine Head Burn My Eyes
"A Thousand Lies" -This song mixed the heaviness of Machine Head with a slightly more palatable chorus than the other songs on this record. I feel like the groove in this song defined what would become "The Burning Red" and "Supercharger" but I won't hold that against it. | | 9 | | Machine Head The Blackening
"Wolves" - Lyrically, I'll raise my middle finger to this song all day but musically I can't get enough. It's relentless, and about 3/4 through, I love that breakdown section where they cycle through different cadences. | | 10 | | Machine Head Through the Ashes of Empires
"Seasons Wither" - I think this was the first MH song that really stuck with me. The guitars really get me on this one. | |

Block is like my fave track on BME and agreed hard about the cycling riff in Wolves, that shit is dope. And teenager me pretty much died when I first saw Robb go into that melodeath riff in the Imperium video. Needless to say my panties were dropped. | Spec
