02.01.18 | These are my thoughts right now: I think it would be fun to deliver a non-linear history via "connected" reviews of specific records, both landmark and less known, but essential to USBM's canon. However, the thought of a blog series is also very appealing to me to as I think it will enable me to have a bit more freedom creatively. At the end of the day, I don't see many users caring about this (unfortunately) but for the few who do have an interest in BM/care to read my material, I'd like to make it "special". Just thoughts, and I'd love to hear some more feedback. |

02.01.18 | Think of it as an exclusive in your own personal magazine. Some simple HTML knowledge would allow you to create a flowing website with pictures on a sidebar with subtitles (much like Wikipedia does) and make it look just like it's an editorial. Let that bitch flow for pages upon pages. For all the dearth of USBM literature you might even seek out a small publication for something like this as long as you can furnish the proper citations.
This is all coming from a very ambitious person. Don't take my illusions of grandeur as anything more than that. Just ideas! |

02.01.18 | @academy - you've always believed in me & i love you
@maco - first is the worst ;]
@pj - that's actually not too far out of the realm of possibility to be honest. i've been thinking about starting an online fanzine for some time. the only doubts i have on that kind of venture are self-imposed but also legitimate. i tend to run out of steam fairly quickly, despite my strong passion. that, and the quality of my writing. i'm not sure it's up to snuff to compose a full "wiki page" worth of material. i can relate to the ambition for sure, i would just want to make sure I have the stones to go through with it before committing. I would hate to do 4 parts just to leave the whole thing unfinished. |
pjquinones747
02.01.18 | I completely understand the running out of steam. I wanted to start my own music site/Youtube channel but idk enough people passionate about music like myself to make something like that happen. If you have friends who enjoy writing maybe enlist them to submit work so that you can make a backlog of material between the few of you and release publications accordingly. |
TheSpirit
02.01.18 | Unfortunately, I don't really have any friends IRL that would care to do anything like this, so it's most likely a solo endeavor. |
pjquinones747
02.01.18 | See if some writers on Sput would contribute. I would volunteer but I am dreadful at full reviews and whatnot lol. I critique myself until I've crumpled my own brain like a sorry piece of paper. |

02.01.18 | The reviews are good, but maybe at the end of the series, take the historical bits from each one and work them into a linear(ish) post of some sorts. |

tastepolice
02.06.18 | why do you feel compelled to cover the last two which are not relevant to black metal
I was hoping to take this endeavor seriously but I guess it's more of the same in the end |
TheSpirit
02.06.18 | Whether your favorites or not, Cascadian black metal and Deafheaven are very relevant the USBM's canon. If you're expecting me to skimp on the more unknown releases from the scene, or not go into detail on some of the lesser known aspects regarding influence, I assure you that I'm planning on making this as comprehensive as possible. I wouldn't let two albums that I just threw on list willy-nilly color your opinion as to what the piece(s) will be in their entirety. |
tastepolice
02.06.18 | I don't doubt that you could bring valuable insight to the development of usbm, especially since I'm looking forward to this because of how much I dismiss it in its entirety, but for me sunbather and similar bands are out of the question because they are not BLACK METAL so how can they be relevant to the development of the genre. I think anyone who wants to seriously dissect the genre should be able to respect that much. Cascadian black metal is a whole other topic, for me, even though I consider them completely useless still, bands like Ash Borer and Fell Voices are worlds apart from deafheaven. So I wouldn't take as much issue with their inclusion but I would still consider it misguided on your part to pay them any attention. Just because something is happening under a certain label does not mean it warrants any attention to itself. |
Dedes
02.06.18 | Deafheaven represents a small section of black metal that has is more a less "pseudo-black metal" so I feel like their should certainly at least be a small bi talking about that style.
Can't wait to see where this goes Spirit! |
pjquinones747
02.06.18 | In the same way bands like Asking Alexandria have departed from what many recognize as "pure", "true" metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc, take your pick), the same can be said about bands like Deafheaven who are clearly heavily influenced by all of the classics dating back to the 80's and 90's regardless of whether or not they sound significantly different. The 40-60yo crowd of old rockers who say Asking Alexandria isn't metal are wrong, they just don't like how it sounds anymore. Not liking how it sounds nowadays is fine but Deafheaven is black metal whether you like it or not. |
TheSpirit
02.06.18 | @tastepolice - i'm at work right now, so I can't respond but i will in a few hours. I actually agree with a fair portion of what you're saying, but I have my gripes with some of it. hopefully i can find the words later that can adequately explain my stance on the topic. no matter what the outcome i do appreciate your input. just curious since you (kind of) brought it up, what is your favorite black metal scene? (if you have one)
@kingdede&PJ - hey guys :] i appreciate you having my back. tastepolice has a lot of merit in what he's saying, but i believe you two do as well. it really comes down to how much i include them in my piece, whether it be a big, small, or no mention. he's given me something to consider for sure, but so have you two. |
tastepolice
02.06.18 | @TheSpirit there is no particular scene that I consider my favorite right now, if we're talking contemporary bm I like a lot of finnish stuff, anything associated with Swartadauþuz from Sweden and there was also interesting things from Bosnia recently (The Throat, BPC and BHO associated things).
If we're talking all time of course Norwegian scene and LNN are obvious. |
Dinosaur
02.07.18 | Canada (Quebec specifically), would be a cool focus. Greece, as well. |
TheSpirit
02.07.18 | SCREAM! would be a great candidate to focus on the Canadian BM scene. He knows a lot about it.
I'm sure pieces on Greek BM exist out there, but I would definitely be interested in doing something for that depending on this goes. |

08.26.19 | so a year and half later...... i'm gonna try and do this again. |
