TheSpirit's 2018 WK3 - listens,thoughts, and thots

I didn't do that much new listening last week, but I loved what I heard.
1Portal
ION

It felt extremely gratifying to finally hear a Portal album; I'm not saying I've never listened to Portal before, but the level of clarity on ION finally provides a keyhole-peek into their particular brand of obscure extreme metal madness. Turns out, these dudes were crazier than I could have ever imagined and their composed insanity far surpasses the majority of their contemporaries, not to mention the hangers-on.
2Verheerer
Maltrér

I was first turned on to these guys after hearing "Kultyst" on Bandcamp about a month ago. It was fantastic. It exuded this esoteric esoteric atmosphere without sacrificing the power and effectiveness of a good riff. The whole of the album is just as great. Verheerer just write good fuckin' black metal, plain and simple. It's multifaceted but not to the point where it loses the traditional feel; the bursts of melody are scant, but well-placed; and it's dichotomy of Satanic shroud and Satanic pummeling is more balanced than your favorite breakfast cereal. Great album, and one of my favorites from the year so far.
3Spectral Lore/Jute Gyte
Helian

Spectral Lore and Jute Gyte are two of the most original black metal acts around today, yet their pairing was never a thought until I discovered Helian. Based on Georg Trackl's "most precious and painful” poem he had ever written", Helian, exposed dimensions of these two bands previously unseen. Jute Gyte's track is a bit more loose by his standards, the atoms of his microtonal blaspheme not as crammed as usual. Of course there are moments where shards of riffage still cut, but overall this is a much more atmospheric piece by Mr. Kalmbach. Spectral Lore's track essentially defies his back catalog, taking the form of lumbering behemoth, slowly but steadily crushing the ears of listeners under its massive weight. The doomier take on his sound works wonderfully though, especially in the context of sharing a split with Jute as well as the crushing subject manner. Definitely one of the oddest things I've heard this year, but still very worthwhile.
4Jord
Panphage

Apparently the last album by this Swedish horde, Jord is melodic black metal, plain, simple, down the middle. It's triumphant, it's fast, it's catchy. Not too much in the way of actual substance, but it definitely scratches a certain itch.
