How do you record music? (HELP)

Hi friends. I've got like 2 albums worth material I'm super proud of and it's my goal to get a full album released in 2018. Anyway, I almost just don't know where to begin with the how-to portion. Currently I play through a Focusrite Scarlett and am going to upgrade to the full version of Guitar Rig 5 for tone. I was thinking I'd use Audacity as the platform to record for cost reasons, but I want opinions on that. Also, what would be the best way to approach drum machine software to use in terms of compatibility with it? Any guidance and insight appreciated! I'M LOST trying to figure this all out on my own.
