December 2017 resumé

YEAR END LIST 13/14. I can't quite decide, whether this is one of the weakest or one of the most average months this year, either way, it isn't all that strong.
20The Dear Hunter
All Is As All Should Be

Amidst all of that underwhelming music this month and the month before, man, I didn't even know just how much I needed some good old Dear Hunter in my life. Thank you for being there for me, you pretentious, bloated silliness, you. 7/10

Blame Paradise, All Is As All Should Be
19Luup
Canticles Of The Holy Scythe

"No metal for you!"
6/10
18Nocturnal Graves
Satan's Cross

[THIS IS A REISSUE, AS IT TURNS OUT]

Man, this is some good old-school Black Metal in modern production's clothing. I just wish it wasn't so tiring by the end. Nevertheless, it is one hell of a ride through nostalgia. 7/10

Rotten Cremation, Nocturnal Maniac, Satan's Cross
17The Clearing Path
Watershed Between Firmament And The Realm of Hyper

I take back my words about Nocturnal Graves. THIS is tiring. Tiring as fuck. 6/10
16Jess And The Ancient Ones
The Horse and Other Weird Tales

Relatively wild, instrumentally adventurous and melodically dizzying, but lyrically slightly confusing. See, I can't quite figure out where those "Weird Tales" are. Almost none of the songs seem to actually tell any tales, as much as they just vaguely reference... something. There might be tales behind it, but the lyrics sure don't let it show. Well, at least you have the aforementioned adventurous instrumentals to keep you entertained. 6/10

Your Exploding Heads, Return to Hallucinate, (Here Comes) The Rainbow Mouth
15Red Vox
Another Light

Watch and learn, King Gizzard, this is how you make mild, mellow Psych Rock and still have a punch. Red Vox came out of nowhere into my life, while I was randomly browsing Sputnik and clicked on them. And because their cover art was intriguing enough and their tag said "psychedelic, alternative rock, indie rock", I checked them out. And I do not regret it in the slightest. Another Light is a damn vibrant Psych-Rock album that just keeps on giving. It is melodically impeccable and instrumentally playful. One of my favourite sleeper hits this year, hands down. 8/10

Settle for Less, Memories Lie, Tell Me, Memento Mori, From the Stars, Rub Your Eyes, Reno, Burn a Picture
14Tongues
Hreilia

Fucking brutal Black/Death Metal that just keeps on giving. Then again, it has the very same problem most other Metal albums of this sort have. That is, it just doesn't know how not to be exhausting. And it is oh so exhausting. Still fun though. 7/10

Perennial Waves, ...And The Ever Watchful Clouds
13Cleric
Retrocausal

Jeeeeeeeeeeesus Chriiiiiist! This was one disorganised mess, man. I don't know how great an idea it seemed to the band to play a Metal record as if it were Jazz, but upon release we only have that, the idea. The album itself is rather a dizzying, excruciating obscurity that has virtually no songwriting and feels more like a drunken man's rambling on what Metal music is, than actually purposefully created music. It's weird in the worst way possible. I'd say avoid this overlong wankery, but I feel like you need to experience it for yourselves to truly understand the sheer strangeness of it all. 5/10
12Lorem Ipsum
Que restera t-il ?

What a strange idea of mixing Screamo with symphonic music? But the strangest part is that it actually kind of works. Not that I think it's a great album, but it does have its own charm to it. I certainly don't have much will to go back to it, but I also don't think that there is much that is flawed here. I mean, check it out for yourselves and decide. 7/10

Chapitre I - De l'eau sous les ongles, Chapitre III - Les reflets de nos ombres, Chapitre VI - Que restera t-il?
11Asking Alexandria
Asking Alexandria

Well, this is unexpected, there is an Asking Alexandria album I don't hate? How is that even possible? Sure, the electronised production is annoying and the songwriting is forgettable, but I still didn't mind listening to it. The world is upside down. This year is crazy! 6/10
10sans visage
moments

Decent Screamo Hardcore from Japan, but not exactly one that has either the staying value or even the listening-to-it-all-in-one-sitting value. 6/10
9Total Control
Laughing At The System

An encyclopedia of any Post-Punk style those endless, imagination lacking revival bands could at least try to imitate, but don't. Thank you, Total Control for at least trying to make them a thing again. 7/10

Laughing at the System 1, Future Creme, Vanity, Her Majesty Budgie, Laughing at the System 2
8The Oh Hellos
Notos

Is it wrong to compare these guys to Of Monsters and Men? Or is it more accurate the other way around? It's just that blend of softness and sudden overwhelming, chanting, instrumentally bloated Folk absurdity, it all simply reminds me of the ol' OMaM, y'know. 7/10

On the Mountain Tall, New River
7Thaw
Grains

How does one have so much going for them and yet consistantly fail to deliver absolutely anything remotely interesting? This is a miracle of lack of imagination. 5/10
6Icarus the Owl
Rearm Circuits

How bad is it that this is my first Icarus the Owl album? I mean I didn't hate it, in fact it was quite enjoyable, but I feel like I am listening to something only fans would truly appreciate. I'm sorry, I think I'm just missing something or is the rest of their discography just like this, the sappy, over-the-top and with silly lyrics? 6/10

Failed Transmissions, Do Not Resuscitate
5Morbid Angel
Kingdoms Disdained

Morbid Angel return to much dispute of many and a great enjoyment of mine. I really did like this record. I really did. It isn't a pinnacle of MA's career and it is far from being outstanding. In fact, I don't think I am able to point out a highlight. But I am able to pop it up and have a blast all throughout again. 7/10
4Glassjaw
Material Control

Being a profound Glassjaw hater since their very birth, the utter unlistenability of this album came as no surprise to me. With an atrocious production that made everything sound flat and disjointed and songwriting with about as much personality as a smashed potato, this is without a doubt a terrible release. However, I cannot say I hate it as much as their previous two atrocities. It is godawfully boring and its sound is headache inducing, but it is not as obnoxious or exhausting as the band's past work. So for that, have yourselves a nudge above with 5/10
3New Today
Suicidal

Quite a standard Post-Punk as derivative as it is humanly possible, but not without its spark here and there. 6/10

Get High, Grin It Bear It, Joy
2King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
Gumboot Soup

And here comes the reason I didn't post this earlier. I looked sceptically upon the band's decision to release 5 records in one year and my fears have been partially fulfilled, as albums like Murder of the Universe and Sketches of Brunswick East are by far some of their weakest, while the better parts of the series, Flying Mictrotonal Banana, barely scratch the surface of the band's best. But towards the end it started to pick up. Polygondwanaland was a surprisingly delightful prog-inspired ride and now this album is one of the band's most mellow and poppy. In a way, I might prefer its lighthearted breeziness over the other outputs in this 5 album series, but on the other, the album lacks that special punch that made the band so outstanding before. So yes, the album does satisfy with its mild attitude, patient songwriting and tender instrumentation, but it could stand to have a more memorable sound and a slightly more mind-bending instrumetnation, as its singles had.
1King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
Gumboot Soup

And at the end of the day, after multiple spins, I still cannot recall more than half of the songs, no matter how hard I try. This one is just atmosphere and vibe over substance, it would seem. 7/10

Beginner's Luck, Greenhouse Heat Death, Barefoot Desert, All Is Known
