| 2017 releases that deserve more attention
*Work in progress* (more releases from bands "P" to "Z" soon) | 1 | | 1476 Our Season Draws Near
Folk, Punk, Post-punk, Blackgaze and everything in between delivered in a very cohesive way. A very dynamic album full of surprises. | 2 | | Agusa Agusa
70' Psych Prog done right. Outstanding musicianship and songs that sound greater than life. | 3 | | Alpha Male Tea Party Health
Very energetic and full of good vibes, math-rock is alive and well with quality releases like this one. | 4 | | Amarok (PL) Hunt
Chill atmospheric prog rock from Poland bordering Bjork-y ambient post-rock at times. One of the most beautiful albums I've heard in quite some time. | 5 | | Amiensus All Paths Lead to Death
Proggy modern black metal that do almost everything right and hit all the rights spots for me | 6 | | Angles 9 Disappeared Behind the Sun
Crazy avant-jazz that is downright fun to listen. Very strong and memorable performances through out the album that left an impact on the listener. | 7 | | Antigama Depressant
Grindcore done in a interesting way to avoid the "same-y-ness" that arguably plagues the genre. Brutal and fun. | 8 | | Arch Echo Arch Echo
Excellent Petrucci-Rudess influenced bedroom prog ala Plini with one of the best keyboardists in the game. | 9 | | Archaeologist Odysseys EP
Bedroom prog with awesome leads and, oddly enough, a real interest in make good songs. | 10 | | Art Contest Two Songs
Psychedelic and dreamy math-rock duo with very weird lyrics and album pacing. "Sports" is SOTY contender for me. | 11 | | Artificial Language The Observer
Neoclassical prog with some post-hardcore influences. One of the most interesting debut albums I've heard in a while. | 12 | | Barock Project Detachment
An essential listen to anyone who loves classic prog. Catchy melodies, terrific songwriting and musicianship. One of the greatest releases of 2017. | 13 | | Barrows Obsidion
Superb kind of dark krautrock-y post-rock that I can't recommend enough. | 14 | | Battlestations Vixit
Very minimalistic work of ambient/post-rock soundscapes done in a hauntingly beautiful way. | 15 | | Bend Sinister The Other Way
Great songs and amazing musicianship, they are similar to The Dear Hunter in their multi-genre approach of sound and overall quality as well. | 16 | | Beyond Grace Seekers
Great melodic death metal with proggy elements added to the mix that surprisingly enough doesn't steal as much from the Gothenburg death metal sound as it could. | 17 | | Binker and Moses Journey to the Mountain of Forever
Kind of exotic free-jazz with awesome grooves. Really spiritual and full of great improvisations. | 18 | | Blumen Mangata
Piano-driven jazz fusion-y bedroom prog that could be more interesting in the songwriting department but that doesn't make it any less impressive. | 19 | | Boucle Infinie 直線移動
Excellent blending of post rock and vaporware from the guy of The Algorithm. | 20 | | Briqueville II
Drone-doom post-metal from Belgium, that is as cathartic as their pals Amenra buy way less abrasive. | 21 | | Bubblemath Edit Peptide
Avant-prog with weird and over-the-top but catchy melodies and a healthy dose of time signature changes that doesn't go to nonsense wankery territory. | 22 | | Bufihimat I
Tech-grind-death that is a blast to listen to. | 23 | | Cameron Graves Planetary Prince
Djenty modern jazz full of killer piano riffs, awesome grooves, and outstanding perfomances from the piano man of Kamasi Washington and his band. | 24 | | Cast (MEX) Power and Outcome
Symphonic prog from a veteran band from Mexico that deserves way more recognition and this album shows why. | 25 | | Cheer-Accident Putting Off Death
Avant-prog immensely unique and creative with a focus in make actual songs. | 26 | | Chêne /ʃɛn/
Dark Post-Metal with Black Metal elements with a great atmospheric sound that thankfully doesn't get too generic. | 27 | | Cleric Retrocausal
If you happen to like Mr Bungle and The Dillinger Escape Plan then there's a serious chance that you'll love this. | 28 | | Coma Cluster Void Thoughts From A Stone
They have a lot in common with modern day Gorguts, but at the same time this sounds extraordinarily fresh and well thought. Forward-thinking and extremely creative prog death with some post-punk vibes added to.the mix. | 29 | | Combat Astronomy Symmetry Through Collapse
Avant-prog with heavy free jazz and zeuhl influences and powerful female vocals that overall can be a little too much if you're not in the right mood, but it's excellent in every aspect and can be extremely enjoyable if you are into the most adventurous side of prog. | 30 | | Common War Possess Yourself
Really great blackened hardcore with a great sense of energy and a fantastic sound overall. | 31 | | Couch Slut Contempt
Female-fronted noisy hardcore, very aggresive and raw in terms of sound. | 32 | | Cranial Dark Towers, Bright Lights
Apocalyptic and massive-sounding post-metal from Germany. | 33 | | Czar (USA-WA) Life Is No Way To Treat An Animal
If you happen to like Mr Bungle and The Dillinger Escape Plan then there's a chance that you'll like this one. | 34 | | Dale Cooper Quartet and the Dictaphones Astrild Astrild
Dark jazz, ambient, lots of atmosphere, crooning vocals. Everything sets the mood for a very intriguing and rewarding listen that feels like a journey, a travel to the inner self. | 35 | | Dan Auerbach Waiting On A Song
Great interpretation of the 60's/70's rock with really good production. It brings nothing new, but the songs are great and catchy enough to warrant at least a couple of listens. Fun album. | 36 | | Dan Terminus Automated Refrains
Cool synthwave that tries to bring new ideas to the genre and arguably succeds | 37 | | Diploid Everything Went Red
Grindcore/screamo that could get obnoxiously abrasive at times but I can't help but love this one for the most part. | 38 | | Down I Go Mortals
Those vocal harmonies are amazing. Fans of Everytime I Die and Between The Buried And Me would love this. Very unique sounding. | 39 | | Droid (CAN) Terrestrial Mutations
I hear elements of Anacrusis and Voivod in their sound. Technical outlandish sci-fi themed thrash metal that isn't as good as Vektor but, anyway, this record is great and they have a lot of potential. | 40 | | Ekos Otra Dimension
Very reminiscent to bands like Airbag, which is to say: modern day Pink Floyd done right. | 41 | | Entrance Book of Changes
Cheesy poppy psych-folk that funnily enough makes for a rich and colorful listening experience. | 42 | | Esmerine Mechanics of Dominion
Wow. Just wow. Jazzy grooves, classical strings and cinematic post-rock that sounds greater that the sum of its parts. Count me in. I love it. | 43 | | Everything Is Terrible Intensely Distressed and on the Verge of Mental Co
Very dark and atmospheric sounding djent with lots of cool ideas that have some room for improvement, but they're pretty neat overall. | 44 | | Exist So True, So Bound
A good homage to the 90's tech death pioneers that is more than just only that. | 45 | | Exquirla Para Quienes Aún Viven
Post-rock with Flamenco vocals that has a really bright future if this really isn't a one-off. Fantastic album. | 46 | | Exocrine Ascension
Sci-fi themed tech-death-grind with extremely great musicianship that is as brutal as clever. | 47 | | Five-Storey Ensemble Night en Face
Avant-prog with a very unusual approach to songwriting that makes for a very interesting listening for the adventurous ears. | 48 | | Gaung Opus Contra Naturam
Exotic and groovy psychedelic prog that could be better production-wise, and it gets a little too repetitive at some point, but there's a lot to like here. | 49 | | Gentle Knife Clock Unwound - Gentle Knife II
Classic prog with strong jazz vibes, it can sound a little cheesy at times, specially those keys, but this is an underrated gem. | 50 | | glaswegians severance
This is by far my favorite album of the year, I don't believe that this thing is even real. They sound like some kind of instrumental symphonic prog/math rock but that really doesn't grasp even the surface of how they really sound and how extremely good this is. Highly recommended. | 51 | | God Mother Vilseledd
Excellent grindcore release with a lot of influences from other genres that offers a lot of great moments and doesn't overstay its welcome | 52 | | Greywoods Hellgazer
Post-Blackened sludge with a very dark and atmospheric sound that is pretty great if you are into that. | 53 | | Ground Patrol DRIFT
They refer themselves as "Battles on acid", and... you know what? it kinda is. Loop based math-rock with dreamy psychedelic vibes. Unique and superb release. | 54 | | Gruntruck Gruntruck
Actually, grunge is pretty much dead, but when I hear this guys... for a moment I visualize the genre at its peak. Surprisingly great release. | 55 | | Gungfly On Her Journey To The Sun
Beardfish were pretty much one of the best modern retroprog bands ever, and their ex-founder member and main songwriter still delivers some excellent moments in this masterfully well-crafted 70's prog rock adventure. | 56 | | Guy Andrews Tåke
Cinematic post-rock meets ambient meets electronic in a memorable recording that defies expectations. | 57 | | Heron (PA) You Are Here Now
Not the most innovative band for sure, but this sounds just perfect and the songwriting is top notch. Excellent post-rock. | 58 | | II II II (UK) Frequency Illusion
The Dillinger Escape Plan meets Sikth. I'm not totally sold on the vocals and there's definitively some room for improvement in terms of performance and mixing, but everything else is unbelievably good. | 59 | | In the Company of Serpents Ain-Soph Aur
Neurosis meets Earth. Droney atmospheric sludgy doom metal with some dark country acoustic passages with a kinda unique guitar sound. Excellent. | 60 | | In The Nursery 1961
Really cool modern classical with some post-rock added to the mix for good measure. | 61 | | In The Presence of Wolves Of Two Minds, Stages 1-2: The Ape And The Cage
Beautiful mathy prog-rock with excellent riffs and ideas that could be better in terms of songwriting but they somehow have the capacity of deliver a few jaw-dropping moments throughout the songs. | 62 | | Impureza La Caída de Tonatiuh
Very original sounding fusion of flamenco and death metal that doesn't get too gimmicky. | 63 | | JK Flesh Exit Stance
Dark techno output from the mastermind of Godflesh and Jesu. Not his best release under this moniker but it's extremely enjoyable on its own right. | 64 | | Jordablod Upon My Cremation Pyre
Psychedelic rock influenced blackened death metal with a good ear for melody and atmosphere. | 65 | | jordsjo Jord
Extraordinary work of symphonic prog. They have arguably one of the most talented keyboardists on the genre
since Sir Alan Wakeman. | 66 | | JYOCHO Days in the Bluish House
Delicious japanese math-rock with female vocals, a flute player and a keyboardist added to the usual instruments. Pop sensibilities with amazing and intrincate instrumental work. Excellent release. | 67 | | Kant Freud Kafka Onírico
Superb songwriting and musicianship. Very melancholic and dream-like symphonic prog that doesn't cease to amaze me every listen. | 68 | | Karda Estra Infernal Spheres
Quality classicaly influenced sympho-prog with some ideas from genres like salsa and bossanova to add some flavor. | 69 | | Kettlespider Kettlespider
This is a mathy post-metal-y symphonic instrumental prog beast that somehow manages to sound classic and modern at the same time. | 70 | | Kill No Albatross Lost in Darkness and Distance
Alternative rock/metal that stands out thanks to the awesome interplay between the two guitarists. Strong ISIS and TTNG vibes on the guitar work which is a weird combination. | 71 | | Krokofant Krokofant III
Great brass-heavy upbeat free jazz-rock full of energy and weird, creative, groovy, tasty guitar solos. | 72 | | KRZTA KRZTA
Meshuggah-ISIS-Converge elements blended together in an interesting way. This sounds cool as hell if not a little bit lacking production-wise. | 73 | | Kungens Man Bränna Tid
Great Kosmiche musik jam sessions with elements of psychedelic rock, noise rock, and shoegaze. Trippy and groovy. | 74 | | L'Effondras Les Flavescences
Extremely solid work of instrumental post-metal ala Russian Circles full of evocative moments and ambient animal sounds ala Utopia from Bjork. | 75 | | L'Orange The Ordinary Man
Superb early jazz influenced work of trip-hop and hip-hop that it's very classy and sounds really atemporal. This guy really deserves more mainstream recognition. Highly recommended. | 76 | | Lechuga The Search Part 3: The Hypothesis
A weirder, cheesier, latin sibling of Liquid Tension Experiment that seemingly makes fun of prog and as a result makes prog fun. | 77 | | Led Bib Umbrella Weather
Upbeat mathy-proggy-noisy avant-jazz with soulful improvisations and stellar production/mixing. | 78 | | Les Chants du Hasard Les Chants du Hasard
Orchestral black metal. No guitars. No bass. No drums. Sounds nice. | 79 | | Lvmen Mitgefangen Mitgehangen
A more stoner-doom version of Amenra with some spoken word moments thrown here and there. Great stuff. | 80 | | Mammal Hands Shadow Work
Modern classical piano driven songs with contemporary jazz added to the mix for a very rich, warm, melodic sound. Beautiful interplays between all the instruments and outstanding musicianship and songwriting skills. Excellent. | 81 | | Manet Devour
Cool doom-jazz with post-rock influences that could sound a bit samey from track to track but it's highly enjoyable. | 82 | | Matt Mitchell A Pouting Grimace
Really crazy modern creative/avant jazz that I happen to like enough to post it here but I only recommend it for /mu/ kids. Check it out this at your own risk. | 83 | | Merkabah (PL) Million Miles
Beast of an album. Really cohesive work of black metal/noise rock influenced jazz with excellent songwriting and meticulous attention to detail. Superb. | 84 | | Meta Meta Gira
So fresh, so imaginative, that has to be some kind of new genre of their own. I have no words for how good this is. Extremely forward thinking jazz for the modern times. | 85 | | Mike Oldfield Return to Ommadawn
A return to form from an old master of cheerful celtic symphonic prog that doesn't bring anything new but it's masterfully done and has a very charming sound. | 86 | | Milco Nerima
So-great-that-is-almost-excellent debut EP of instrumental bedroom prog with hints of neoclassical. It's really short in terms of lenght and feels like it really needs more to it, but the closer is extremely good and got me excited for future releases though. | 87 | | Moon Diagrams Lifetime of Love
Really great ambient project from one of the of the founders of Deerhunter. Truly hypnotic and immersive. | 88 | | Mountaineer Sirens & Slumber
Shoegazy post-hardcore with more than a handful of tasty doom riffs. Very melodic and surprisingly great. | 89 | | Nadah El Shazly Ahwar
Amazingly unique debut from an egyptian woman that, funnily enough, began her musical career making covers of Misfits songs. Extremely fresh take on Jazz/arabic folk with Nico/Bjork-like vocals. Excellent. | 90 | | Nate Smith Kinfolk: Postcards From Everywhere
Really cool soul/r'n'b/hip-hop influenced take on contemporary jazz. "Skip Step" happens to be my third favourite song of the year, and maybe one of my favourites ever so there's that. | 91 | | Naeramarth The Innumerable Stars
Cool progressive folk/black metal with some electronic elements and a brilliant guest appearance for the sax guy from Shining (NO). IIRC I think this is a one man act and it shows. It could be better with tighter songwriting and better sounding production. Otherwise really impressive. Fans of Ihsahn and Katatonia might dig it. | 92 | | Necrot Blood Offerings
OSDM that is a lot of fun. Very engaging from start to finish and thankfully doesn't sound overly generic or tiresome. Great album. | 93 | | Netra Ingrats
Trip-Hop/Black Metal that, similar to what happened with Zeal & Ardor, could be more interesting in the black metal department. The other genres involved are done perfectly and the songwriting is amazing for the most part with a lot of shifts and turns and tons of good melodies. | 94 | | Nordic Giants Amplify Human Vibration
Powerful piano-driven post-rock with heavy presence of meaningful spoken word parts and some jazzy vibes. Strong production values and musicianship. It's really great. | 95 | | Nordmann The Boiling Ground
Fun indie rock/kraut rock influenced jazz. Upbeat, original and extraordinarily accesible for a kinda experimental album. | 96 | | Northless Last Bastion Of Cowardice
Crushingly agressive sludge metal full of tasty riffs and extremely angry vocals. Thanfully there are a few atmospheric and quiter moments here and there, so the listener could breathe some air in a sometimes asphyxiating listen. | 97 | | Nubya Garcia Nubya's 5ive
Outstandingly good hip-hop-influenced jazz. Sick grooves, really soulful and touching performances done with mad skills and feeling throughout the album. Definitely a superb release from this awesome woman and her band. | 98 | | Oceanic Trappist
This album has some of the more beautifully done guitar work I heard in my life. They have a lot in common with Animals and Leaders but with way less repetitive song structure and a more post-rock/math-rock inclined sound. Their previous album was one of my favourites ever, and this one is at least Top 5 of the year for me. | 99 | | Oceanwake Earthen
Doom metal/post-metal with lenghty songs that somehow feel shorter than it should thanks to a great use of dynamics. Mostly instrumental stuff, the softer moments are really well done and the clean singing is great. | 100 | | Omrade Nade
If you blend all the discography of Ulver in one album I can totally see it sounding just like this. But they aren't mere copycats, this is a very unique and compelling listen with very interesting ideas. | 101 | | Owlcrusher Owlcrusher
My skull must be an owl because it's been seriously crushed and destroyed by this. I like it more than I'd want to admit. Absurdly heavy sludge doom metal with demonic vocals and punishing riffs. | |
Artuma
12.17.17 | genre descriptions please | teamster
12.17.17 | I tried 29, a lot, many times, over and over...on advice from a friend. I just couldn't get it. | Ulshad
12.17.17 | @Artuma, I will post the genres ASAP
@teamster, yep, it drags a little when I'm not in the right mood, but I find it a very interesting listen and kinda enjoy most of it. | Papa Universe
12.17.17 | wasn't there another list you posted recently? | Ulshad
12.17.17 | @Papa Universe, you're right. Was my EOTY list, but I erased it by accident because shit happens :/ | Papa Universe
12.17.17 | oooooh, right. the feeling i know all too well | Dewinged
12.17.17 | Holy crap, where did u get all these!? | Papa Universe
12.17.17 | i'm jamming the fuck out of 1476 right now. | Ulshad
12.17.17 | @Dewinged, this is mostly stuff from monthly recommendations from a handful of blogs and webs throughout the year that I've enjoyed a lot, and that I think a lot of people couldn't get into for some reason
@Papa Universe, my first listen was not knowing anything about them and I was immediatly floored by their genre-blending skills and overall sense of raw passion and great atmosphere. I liked the vocals a lot too. | Calc
12.17.17 | genre descriptions please [2] | Dewinged
12.18.17 | I see, well there's a lot to check here man, thanks for this. | Dewinged
12.18.17 | 6, 32 and 45 I can say too they are great | TheWrenKing
12.18.17 | sweeeet list man, i've only heard 6 here, itsa good un | porcupinetheater
12.18.17 | Roselit Bone - Blister Steel. Check Leech Child | Sinternet
12.18.17 | i have heard like two of these lmao will check some | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @Calc: Genres are posted now adorned with Tommy Wiseau-esque broken english mini blurbs.
@Dewinged: you're welcome man. 6 and 45 are excellent, 32 is great but their previous band, Omega Massif, was even better. Hope you find something of value here.
@TheWrenKing: thanks man, if you liked 6 there's a chance you would enjoy 17.
@porcupinetheater: thank you for that outstanding rec. I loved it. The climax is just perfect, love the voices and the feeling of hopelessness that every note in this song evokes. It's not the same thing at all, but it made me realize how much I miss Yankee Foxtrot Hotel era Wilco and how much I like avant-country, if that genre even exists. I listened to the whole album and I can totally see this being AOTY-worthy material for some, they are something else.
@Sinternet: Thank you. Hope you find something of your liking. | Deathconscious
12.18.17 | 19's artwork looks cool. Good to see Cranial on here. | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @AdolfChrist: 19's cover is gorgeous indeed. Really interesting project. Cyberpunk ambient post-rock shouldn't be that good or interesting on premise, but somehow it works pretty well most of the time, specially for a debut EP. And yeah, Cranial are great and I really wish they achieve excellence on the next release. | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | Welp, I'm gonna jam at least everything... | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @Papa Universe: If you're even mildly interested in Everything is Terrible, I have a waaaaaaaay better rec for you: The Hirsch Effekt - Eskapist. | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | Particularly these draw my interest:
2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 24, 26, 28, 37, 44, 50, 57, 60, 61
And these I've heard:
1, 13, 19, 35, 36, 42, 45 | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | + Everything is Terrible and the Hirsch Effekt | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @Papa Universe, 50 is really something else. Maybe a little bit overwhelming on first listen, but incredibly rewarding and unique. | CygnusX1
12.18.17 | Only heard 3 and 32 but both were great. I gotta listen to a lot of these | BlackMalachite
12.18.17 | Holy shit, feature this list. Also 19 peaked my interest the most, I just checked it out and it rules, "System" is such a good track. | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @Cygnus: Yeah 3 is super fun, and I'm kinda surprised about 32 getting so much recognition. Hope you find something worthy of your ears here.
@BlackMalachite: Thank you man.19 is great and so is "System", my favorite song on the EP is the closer thought. Really nice little project. | BlackMalachite
12.18.17 | I recommended your list for a feature by the way, hopefully you get it! | Sowing
12.18.17 | Nice. | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | gods have spoken! | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | and I jammed about a third of these already | Ulshad
12.18.17 | Wow, thank you very much guys! I'll keep working on this. I don't know if 2017 is greater than previous years or it's only that I happened to employ more time finding goodies and got a better understanding of how good has been this year musically. Anyway, thank you all. I'll keep sharing some more, hope you'll find something dig-worthy. | Ulshad
12.18.17 | @Papa Universe: Ha ha, that's dedication man. Did you find something decent? | BlackMalachite
12.18.17 | Congrats on the feature! I'm probably going to jam a few more of these albums in the near future. | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | well, for starters 1476 is definitely making its way into my top 20 | Ulshad
12.18.17 | Thank you a lot @BlackMalachite and I'm glad that you dig 1476, @Papa Universe. Strangely enough didn't make it for my Top 100 and I love that album, so I'm here listening to it once again. | pjquinones747
12.18.17 | Very interesting list. I haven't heard of almost all of these, and have found some great additions for late-year cramming. | Papa Universe
12.18.17 | I kinda went crazy:
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/75659/1476-Our-Season-Draws-Near/ | kevbogz
12.18.17 | Alter - Pendulum, cheggit | kevbogz
12.18.17 | phenomenal list, btw. just added so many albums to my winter-break list, which just about every one was on Spotify. cheers! | Ulshad
12.19.17 | @pjquinones747: Cheers, hope there's something you might enjoy.
@Papa Universe: It was a great read really. Pos'd.
@kevbogz: thank you a lot! I will check that Alter album, I've seen it in a couple of AOTY lists and I'm kinda interested. | Deathconscious
12.19.17 | glad i checked 19, its some really good shit. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | Yep, I hope they don't pull a one-off because of this being a side project. The mix of genres sounds really well done and pretty unique. Stellar debut for sure.
| ElHombreChino
12.19.17 | haha for a second I thought Diploid's Everything Went Red was Sleep well beast (for the artcover). That one had enough attention I think. :)
| Ulshad
12.19.17 | Ha ha, yeah that album has like 500 votes or more, and there's a couple that I didn't post it here because they had like 60 or so, which all things considered it's not a very high number. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | Thank you Xenophanes. Your 2017's metal list is really good though. | Ikarus14
12.19.17 | I would have added Deaf Havana's 'And All These Countless Nights' album here. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | I haven't listened to that album yet, I've seen it recommended a couple of times now, so eventually I'll check it hoping for the best. | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | listening report thus far (some I've heard before):
1 - reviewed it
2 - really nice instrumentally and compositionally, but I can't help and think that I've heard it somewhere already. and I don't mean the sound of it, I mean literally the melodies and the songwriting... feels like a rip-off of something famous, but can't point out what exactly.
6 - grower; a tad tiring, but ultimately rewarding.
10 - t(w)oo many songs. I liked the obscurity of it all, but it just became hard to sit through towards the end, espedcially considering that the album mainly consists of half finished oddments, rather than full tracks.
11 - if Muse went post-hardcore.
13 - well, this certainly has its charm. It's as typical a post-rock as it can get, but it has something to it nonetheless.
14 - good god this gets epic at times, but then again, it can also get kinda boring.
19 - never quite fully fulfilling the expectations, but still a fairly nice ride. I just expected it to get really crazy at any moment, for whatever reason.
26 - ridiculously entertaining and crushingly played, doesn't go too far into any particularly original directions, but is still a great album.
35 - the sappiest, blandest singer-songwriter tediousness there is in 2017, hands down.
36 - it's tiring, a bit samey, but fine enough to listen to
37 - kinda disappointing, but not boring at least.
38 - really can't figure out what exact amazng things you found in those vocals and music, cause it sounded extremely messy and amateurish to me.
42 - this bored me to tears, honestly.
50 - actually kinda beautiful. don't think it'll make it to my top 50, but it might be near. I like the almost theatrical, overwhelming goofiness of the sound and the chosen instruments
61 - loved the album cover, hated the music and the annoying whiny vocals.
70 - yyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeesssshhh
74 - that goddamn artwork is fantastic! Metal recorded as Jazz is also a pretty wild idea. I only with it shone through more than it did. It's certainly a great release, it doesn't bore and doesn't underwhelm, but it does miss that special oompjh to make it actually great. Still, it might after all see the bottom of my top 100.
78 - this is what happens when the atmospheric part of ABM takes over the black metal one. it's intriguing, but dizzying and misses that metallic punch | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | listening to Cranial now | BeyondCosby
12.19.17 | This is why I wait until the end end of the year to post my list. Every time I think I've listened to a good chunk of shit I get more good recs. Cheers man. | Sevengill
12.19.17 | Kamancello, fools | Deathconscious
12.19.17 | Common War is pretty sick too. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | I'm glad that you checked 50, and I know I'm alone with 35, but it clicked with me somehow. Our tastes and opinions seem to be pretty different so I really appreciate that you've checked so many even with that in mind. Cheers sir. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | I know that feel BeyondCosby, this is not my AOTY list for that very reason, but a good chunk of this will be in.
I got to check Kamancello yet.
And yeah I love everything about that Common War album, the guitar tones, sense of urgency, vocals... surprisingly good indeed. | Sabrutin
12.19.17 | Hell yeah someone talking about 77, excellent album. Props for 34 too, I was surprised by the presence of vocals. I tried 17 time ago but I wasn't in the mood for it, unlucky album. I'm sure 85 is nice but it's another one I wasn't in the mood for throughout the year.
You may want to check this jazz fusion supergroup which members include John Scofield and Jack DeJohnette: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bna2WHqU81A | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | Carnial listened to through and through, it's decent and surprisingly enough isn't tedious, considering the length of the tracks. Nothing too special, but still a good enough time spender. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | @Sabrutin: Thanks for the rec, I completely forgot about it. I need to check to full thing. You might dig 97 and maybe 80. For something more unconventional take, try 89 and 84. And 82 only if you have a sword and a shield to protect you. | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | by the way, if you're taking recs:

Ghash - Goat (Atmo Black Metal/Post-Metal)
Kairon; IRSE! - Ruination (trippy Heavy-Psych)
Neun Welten - The Sea I'm Diving In (Ambient-ish Post-Punk/Goth)
Bullet Bane - Continental (Post-Hardcore/Pop-Punk)
Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid (pure fucking insanity, don't expect anything specific, just anticipate strangeness and surprise on every turn)
The Angelus - There Will Be No Peace (Doom Folk)
Succumb - s/t (odd vocals, Black-Death Metal)
Selbst - s/t (gloomy Black Metal) | Ulshad
12.19.17 | At first listen I hated it honestly. Sometimes I still hate it. Maybe was because of high expectations, their previous band was way more interesting imo. But definitely a grower and a good template for greatness to come in future releases. | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | what was the previous band? | Ulshad
12.19.17 | 1 I've seen it rec a few times, might check it
2 hated it back when it was released, blame the vocals
3 kinda love it but need a few more spins to have a more solid opinion
4 gotta check it
5 never heard of it but good pop-punk is a must for stay positive so might check it
6 I love it, Top 50 material at least for me, maybe higher
7 never heard of it [2] could be good I guess
8 seen recommended a lot, might check it
9 pretty meh when I listened to it on release, but maybe I will give it another chance at sometime | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | I dunno, Ghash seemed like the most beautiful Post-Balck-Metal this year to me, hands down. And the vocals are fairly decent for my taste... | Ulshad
12.19.17 | Omega Massif. When they broke up a couple of members founded Phantom Winter and the rest did the same with Cranial. Omega Massif was a product of its era though, I love them but by today standards they're pretty generic I guess. | Ulshad
12.19.17 | Opinions are the devil, might re-spin that beast hoping I'm wrong or my memory is fucked. | Papa Universe
12.19.17 | hoping [2] | kevbogz
12.20.17 | I've checked out a fair amount of this and every single one I did, I loved. bump |
