Metal: Cult Classics Pt. IX

After a long time, figured I should do another one of these. As usual, all of these have less than 100 votes at the time of writing.
1Aeternus
Dark Sorcery

While the band did excellent work on their full lengths, this EP is where the combination of the repetitive and hypnotizing riffing, abyss-deep growls and atmospheric touches create the effect of shifting through a dreamlike murk like nothing else. Overlooked atmospheric metal mastery.
2Necromantia
Scarlet Evil, Witching Black

While many mostly associate "hellenic black metal" with the melodic yet morbid sounds of early Rotting Christ, Necromantia created a different approach. Using an 8-string bass instead of rhythm guitar, distant and incomprehensible rasps, unusual instrumentation (like at one time a saxophone) and exotic-sounding leads, they managed to make an eccentric occult work of black metal not to be missed.
3Kvist
For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike

Melodic black metal that's nothing like the Swedish sound the term is often associated with. Aside from the strange and unique vocal performance, this isn't really all that unlike what Satyricon was doing on their record "The Shadowthrone" - but better.
4Dream Death
Journey Into Mystery

Slayer by the way of old school Celtic Frost or Celtic Frost by the way of Slayer? You decide. Either way, it rules.
5Root
The Book

The Czechs have always been known for their slightly unusual take on metal (look no further than Master's Hammer or Lykathea Aflame). Root started out as part of the black metal scene, but developed into a band that, while never really losing their black metal vibe, also incorporated atmospherically exotic instrumentation, old school hard rock and doom. Ghost, take notes, this is how it's done.

(yeah, they sound nothing like Ghost, but what the hell do I know)
6Bell Witch
Longing

Fairly recent album, but this album is what put the Washington doomsters on the metal map. Well deserved, I might add - showing that you can still be creative with only using apocalyptical-sounding bass plucks, drums and an almost ghostly dual vocal presence.
7Blitzkrieg
A Time Of Changes

As far as I'm concerned, one of the greatest exports from the NWOBHM scene back in the days. Unbelievably catchy while still being blistering and haunting, featuring Satan's Brian Ross' as per usual excellent vocal work.
8Hades Almighty
The Dawn Of The Dying Sun

Viking metal classic that favors a gritty production, crushingly heavy instrumentation and an almost black metal-like trance-inducing songwriting over the folk instrumentation often associated with the style - even though the pagan touches are of course still there to spice things up a bit. One of the best you'll find in this style.
9Riot
Fire Down Under

The US' answer to the NWOBHM of that time. Insanely addictive songwriting without ever being too "pop-catchy". Fire up that motorcycle, put on your MC jacket and let's sell some dope and shoot up a few rivals while cranking out these tunes!
10The Crown
Eternal Death

Before The Crown was, well, The Crown - known for their thrashy death 'n' roll stuff - they created this melodic death metal record under the name of Crown of Thorns. Eternal Death is, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest album they've put out. Don't let the "melodeath" tag fool you, this is as nasty as it gets. The pace and vocal delivery is downright venomous and the melodic part of the music is haunting and evocative yet eerie. This is melodic death metal as it should be done.
