Rec Roulette Round 9: The Year at Large

Relatives In Descent

Gimme two BEST songs of 2017.

Gimme two WORST songs of 2017.
3Kamasi Washington
Harmony of Difference

The worst will be subtracted from the best in your final score.
4The Tiger Lillies
Cold Night in Soho

butcher's BEST
bgillesp was right, I don't like Tiger Lilies. They always go for that gradually-getting-under-your-skin kind of slowburner music, but that point of actually getting under your skin never comes. It's an okay song, but really not that interesting. 3.0/5
5Institute (USA-TX)

butcher's BEST
You done good, butch, this time. This track has that good old noisy aesthetic that gives me chills. The only downside are the absolutely out-of-place vocals. They are almost emotionless and with no real enthusiasm in their delivery. They really drag tis otherwise decent track down. 3.5/5
6Jacob Sartorius
Last Text

butcher's WORST
Oh look, I suddenly tolerate child murder. 1.1/5
7Sam Hunt

butcher's WORST
"Her and I go way back like the Cadillac seats." "I'll take it slow, just as fast as I can." "Got hips like honey, so thick and so sweet." "Body like a back road, driving with my eyes closed, I know every curve like the back of my hand." nuff said 1.3/5

8The Grassabillies
20 lb Test of Love

bgillesp's BEST
I utterly desipe Country. But for whatever these unwashed, unshaved southeners have some kind of charm to them, even though that banjo is as irritating as a banjo can be. 3.2/5
9Nokturnal Mortum

bgillesp's BEST
Great, you got me an over-the-top Folk-Black Metal. THe hard parts hit home a lot of the times, but even then they seem like just a bit above-average and nothing really special. Mix it with quite uninteresting quieter parts and you get yourself a fairly fine, but forgettable tune. 3.3/5
10Bent Knee
Land Animal

bgillesp's WORST
I'll disappoint you, gill. I liked this track. I really did. It's a fairly strange, but ultimately really intriguing and fascinatingly off-the-wall track. Some might find the vocals a little grading, but I felt like they had their own charm. The music is somewhat weird, but all the more gripping for it too. I don't know why'd you think this is band. Especially considering I really liked their previous album. 3.6/5
11Black Malachite
Distortion World

bgillesp's WORST
If police comes around looking at my browser history, this search'll be hard to explain. 1.5/5

12Ryuichi Sakamoto

Fripp's BEST
This... is beautiful. I am really rarely into Ambient and easy-listening music, but there is some kind of homely, inherently chamring atmosphere to this song (and album itself, by the way) that keeps me gripped, in spite of its slow pace. It makes me feel like I'm in some kind of Sorrentino film or something. You done good, Fripp. 4.4/5
13Ariel Pink
Dedicated to Bobby Jameson

Fripp's BEST
I'll tell you what, this is one of the better tracks off of this album. It's a waving, colourful and fun track. But just like most other Ariel's outputs I need to be in a special mood to listen to it. 3.5/5
14Animal Collective
The Painters

Fripp's WORST
Disorganised, off-beat and plain ugly, but its biggest offence is that it is utterly forgettable. Animal Collective, in spite of how strange they could get were never absolutely forgettable. There always was something to their songs that'd dig its way ito your memory, but this is just an odd and, as mentioned above, disorganised mess. 2.0/5
15Jack Johnson
All the Light Above It Too

Fripp's WORST
Last time I heard this guy was about 5 years ago... he still plays the exact same song. still just as bland. 1.5/5
