08.09.17 | Connor: No, but I'm amidst of writing about 14 different lists, all summing up the year that I'm planning on posting every day in the final two weeks of the year. One of them is dedicated to music videos and their classification in my view with certain notable examples. I might use this video in the DIY category. |

08.09.17 | Good stuff man! I've been working on editing a lot of music videos lately (a good friend of mine is a music video director), so I have a couple suggestions if you don't mind :) |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | dude shoot em my way I was hoping ppl would comment their criticisms! |
neekafat
08.09.17 | So I really liked it (especially the shots with him in the chair with the christmas lights) but compared to a lot of other stuff out there it came off as a bit amateur so here's a couple things I think could make your work a bit more professional!
I strongly recommend using a Letterbox, the same friend recommended it to me a while back and I've used it in everything since. It really makes everything look more cinematic and draws the eye to the screen
Also I think you should invest in or rely on a tripod in the shots where he's singing, some of the shake works but a lot of it comes off as a bit unintentional
Finally I would say don't be afraid to get some b-roll shots to throw around the video to spice things up a bit and draw the viewer in a bit more aside form the same shots of the dude singing
Hope I didn't tear into too much haha it's just that I'm going to school for this kinda stuff and I like giving honest criticism because I think it helps me with my own stuff lol
Btw, here's a project that me and my friend worked on, I edited everything that was b-roll and he overlayed his stuff afterwards, think it might help you out with some of the stuff I was talking about! Let me know if you need a hand or have any other questions!

08.09.17 | haha neeka!! thank you dude yeah this is literally the first thing I have ever "directed" the title is def a bit tongue in cheek but as someone majoring in the design realm I'm always interesting in mixed media related to it. this was so helpful and we are planning one more music video before I leave for college so I'll def look into Letterbox.
we shot everything in a day and we planned literally nothing beforehand haha (hence why some things come off unintentional). even the things that look intentional (like the shot of him dancing in the sunset overlayed with the field shot which matched up so well and is my fav) was completely luck when we went to editing. I agree that my camera work is shaky at times (the prop joint may or may not have been real (; hah) but for the future I'll keep all that in mind.
I think compared to most DIY this is better than some other vids I've seen (personal preference ik ik) just cuz it's supposed to be p playful and not too serious but I appreciate ur feedback a tonnn |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | Hmm, making a video without a clear plan, that's an interesting method. Some kind of low budget "scientific poke method". |
neekafat
08.09.17 | Yeah man I would agree that for sure! You have a lot of potential in the field considering how quickly you put it all together, so I can't wait to see the next one! |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | btw once u pay someone to direct/edit ur music video its no longer DIY hence my last comment
and yeah we had ideas for what shots we wanted (beach, sunset, etc.) but no like overarching theme/story |
neekafat
08.09.17 | Haha reminds me of the shorts I used to make with my mates, literally only had a vague story before shooting the entire video in a day |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | haha ok story time:
the way we shot this video was I came over with two friends around 5:30 with my camera and we got our "props" ready and tried to brainstorm video ideas. We realized we we running low on natural lighting tho so we just said fuck it, packed a speaker, 4 props, and walked/climbed to this remote lil beach near us. Then we chased the sunset in a car (the shot u see at the beginning/end is from the few usuable clips of that), found a field which looked sick. took some more shots at that field and then we went back home and shot the christmas lights footage. I came back two days later (on two hydros since it was the day after my wisdom tooth surgery) and we synced up the non b-roll shots and laid out all of our cuts/what edits we wanted to do. then my friend (NovelT) went to Lolla the next day, took two addys because he drove his friend home and edited/perfected the video from 1am to noon.
did some slight tweaking since but yeah thats our story |
neekafat
08.09.17 | Well shit that's intense lol |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | was quite fun ngl |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | So I tried assessing a certain amount of thoughts on this video, but I believe I have failed. It can be either looked at seriously, in which case it's easily some of the worst videomaking I've seen in my life (and I've seen my high school mates make a movie back in the day); or it can be taken for what it is, which, given the fact that there wasn't even an idea behind it, except for "Let's make a clip", is that it isn't seriousu business, in which case what we have here is an okay amateur work filled with silly and laughable imagery, but one understandible for the quality niveau and, I assume, the budgetary restraints. It's fine, it's a freshly post-teen Bandcamp rapper from Wisconsin's music video, I couldn't expect it to surpass the heights of Michael Bay's clip-making finesse. |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | haha yeah this does strut the line between serious and totally not serious but keep this in mind:
a. this was shot with a Canon DSLR which I have previously used strictly for my architecture portfolio / vacation photos. not an expensive camera and def not ideal for shooting videos
b. I have had ZERO directorial training and little video editing experience
c. we spent $0 making this video
but yeah like I said only thing we planned was that it was gonna be 6/10 serious so take it semi seriously (mostly for the music) and semi jokingly (why else would there be the weird intro/outro clips // scenes of him dancing hahah) |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | Well, for a first-time director without a budget you still did better than, say, St. Vincent with a budget. |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | oh and d. all post-production is brought to you by iMovie! |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | You iMovie primitives with all of your advanced editing technologies. I am here with the rest of the badasses shooting on a Blackberry and editing with Windows Vista MovieMaker! That's what's called having balls! |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | oh man dude can't wait for that pilot you're shooting to come out if thats the case!! |
ianblxdsoe
08.09.17 | for a $0 budget it's not bad at all, sick song too |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | yo thanks ian. song is goat ya |
neekafat
08.09.17 | iMovie is actually really solid way to start out |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | yeah true I mean idk much about post but the features it has are pretty cool and its reallly simple to use |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | Connor: It's still not certain if we're gonna get picked up. As a matter of fact, we are most likely not going to be. I mean, we're still not done with the post-production, the editor's called saying some of the scenes need to be reshot, cause they are uneditable, we're drying the budget and the season for new show pickups is pretty much ending, so I don't know. Some new network execs were supposed to arrive last week to review the finished material and such, but they didn't and we have no word from the network yet. We're getting fucked up the ass from every side now, some of the actors even started going away for other auditions. Every sign shows that this might just fall into that pit of forgotten pilots that never got picked up. And what sucks is that if it does fall through, I'm basically jobless. I have a contract, which on one hand grants me my life's wish of finally running my own series, but on the other hand fucks me from every side, so I can't look for or negotiate otehr jobs during this one's production, so if it gets dumped, I'm basically jobless. I mean, I can still go back to what I did for about first 9 years of my "career", which is freelancing, but that'll pay like shit. It's all looking bleak. |
Conmaniac
08.09.17 | damn man well best of luck honestly. I say as long as you're doing something you're passionate about youll find a way to make it work but I'm sure you dont need life advice from someone half your age |
Papa Universe
08.09.17 | One thing that comforts me is knowing that people like Dan Harmon, Matthew Weiner or Vince Gilligan all got their first showrunning gigs at around my age, but at least Dan Harmon got three smooth seasons before getting mentally raped by his network year after year. |
Conmaniac
08.10.17 | are those your favorite directors? |
Papa Universe
08.10.17 | Those are showrunners (headwriters of hit shows). Vince Gilligan made Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Matthew Weiner wrote Mad Men and Dan Harmon masterminded Community and Rick & Morty. |
Conmaniac
08.10.17 | yeah I know them I was just curious ahaha |
cosmopazz
08.10.17 | dude it's bad, but don't worry, so is any amateur rap video |
