07.30.17 | An unfulfilled sneeze is among some of the worst feelings a person can possibly experience. Among losing a loved one and witnessing or experiencing a horrifying tragedy, unfulfilled sneeze is definitely the one that gets to me on a deep and personal level, since the cynical cunt that I am, I find tragedies hilarious and I never loved anyone enough to be sad about their absence. But my body's unfortunate inclanation to yawning any time I open my mouth causes me to lose approximately 50% of all potential sneezes. I guess I am such a frequent yawner, because most things in life simply bore me. But nevermind.
With that said, what could possibly be a musical equivalent of that? Naturally a disappointing song. Something that builds up momentum and never explores it. An enragingly dreary moment of unreached expectations. I've lived a long life and I failed to sneeze a lot, and just as much as that I failed to find satisfaction in music of all sorts. Among such disappointments may be Gonjasufi's Shakin Parasites, which just sort of drags on without giving you any pay off, or Do Make Say Think's Horripilation that, with a 10 minutes runtime, fails to reach that crescendo typical for Post-Rock and ultimately leaves you wanting more.
But if I am to submit a song of unfulfilled expectations, it better come from an album of unfulfilled expectations.
It's
Air - Angel Palace
10 minutes of nothing going nowhere! At least the rapid mouth opening and energy restraining before the sneeze results in a feeling above any other. This just keeps you waiting for nothing to come. |

07.30.17 | Feist's Century and its damned abrupt ending reminded me of another sudden conclusion that left a lot to be desired. That is Other People by The Divine Comedy. The entirety of the Foreverland album is dedicated to exceptionally crafted songwriting, whose beauty is one to behold. But among all of those inherently joyous songs, one came along that seemed rather subtle and gentle and yet somehow all the more beautiful for it. Other People seemed like something with a potential for progress, from a quiet confessional to a pompous beauty, but as the very bridge kicked in and the listener was ready to pomp up excitement for what's to come, the song ends with a dubious "and- bla bla bla bla" as if to signal "Fuck you, listener, this sweetness galore ain't for your ears." Utter disappointment. |
