My Epiphany

Once in a while, you have a day that puts everything in perspective and makes one re-evaluate their path in life. I have to admit that the 4th of July was one of them. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've been doubting my musical abilities and passion lately, even thinking of pursuing different arts entirely (such as journalism and creative writing). But something magical happened on the 4th of July. I was chilling in downtown Norfolk when I came upon one of those "Play Me, I'm Yours" pianos that are scattered throughout out the town. As the name suggests, anyone can sit down and play these pianos. So I decided to play some old classical and jazz tunes that I was familiar with. Quite a few people took notice and started recording me on their phones. Well, some people from the Hilton hotel in the area, who admittedly seemed quite tipsy from the happy hour there, started asking me to play some popular songs. I started out with Journey's Faithfully, which was fun to play as usual. But then something really neat happened. I decided to play Jeff Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah, handling both piano and vocals. But as I went through each chorus, the chanting of "Hallelujah" from the onlookers got louder and louder. They were singing alongside me, and this one piano became the source of an incredibly fun singalong between all of us. I was thanked by a bunch of the people who stood by to listen. That day basically proved to me that I want to keep music as my main focus in the future, if it makes so many people happy and can be used as such a beautiful means of bringing groups of people together. Needless to say, I left in incredibly high spirits and a different outlook on things. Once I get a piano or keyboard again, you can bet I'll be practicing the hell out of it regularly again
