06.19.17 | Don't really understand why you'd call queer artists a "scene". Check out Cynic though. The sexuality of the musicians is hell of a nonsensical thing to look out for in music tho imo |

06.19.17 | Delete yourself. It's a shame that something like it is even necessary, but it sadly is
Edit: wow it worked |
Papa Universe
06.19.17 | @RikRoach7: I suppose that you can call a 'queer scene' only those artists who make their sexuality some kind of gimmick and a main conceptual focus in their music either lyrically (such as PWR BTTM) or in their often flamboyant personality (such as Perfume Genius). St. Vincent for example never adressed her sexuality in her songs, and I think that is why nobody ever puts her on a piedestal of any 'queer scene'. Hope this answers your question. |

06.19.17 | What I really dont understand about the minorities like gays and black people, is focus on their sexual life and skin color rather than being a good person overall. I dont mind to listen to gay musicians if their music is good, but if its shit, its shit, no matter what kind of sexual intercourse you prefer. This, almost schizophrenic focus on their sexual behavior and lists like this one makes gay people being a bit out of pace. |

06.19.17 | there's a difference between artists who are gay, and artists for whom sexuality is a prime characteristic, whether done out of an ideological statement or for lack of any other commercial personality (Perfume genius vs. PWR BTTM).. that being said, if you're looking for queercore artists, most gay people I know consider both Bowie and Morrissey to encapsulate the scene far better than most of actually openly gay artists.. if you're looking for just artists who are gay, BOB MOULD!!! |
Rik VII
06.19.17 | @UniqueUniverse: I understand what you mean. First though, that would mean that like 95% of all recommended artists on here have nothing to do with that scene (including Cynic and stuff), and second, I still think it's kinda weird, since it's so general. It's like having a scene of blonde-haired people because they sing about it hahah. (Well, people will hate that comparison, so I better add that I'm aware that it's not the most fitting one, but it brings across what I mean.) On the other hand, I guess it's because a lgbtq-oriented song is always bound to be provoking to some degree in the society we live in (sadly) and because of that can be considered as some kind of protest song, which would explain why it could be called a "scene". But on the other hand, I wouldn't call every politically left-centered music part of the same scene for instance, that would be weird.
Ah, well. |
Papa Universe
06.19.17 | @RikRoach7: Sure, but you would sum up every artist pandering to the same audience with similar messages into one specific group, wouldn't you? I guess that's what people mean by the word 'queer scene'. But that's just my naive interpretation of the word. Naive, because I didn't realise that people just throw everyone, who identify themselves with a certain group, into a basket of sameness calling them 'scene' and expecting them to only create music based for and around that said 'scene'. |

his early tapes are especially dope, i love fly zone and dark york but they're kind of hard to find these days. all my recs address queerness in some aspect, unlike artists like sam smith who identify as gay but make explicitly non-gay music:
-limp wrist
-pansy division (if u like melodic punk, there early stuff is really fun)
-julien baker
-arthur russell |

06.19.17 | Appreciate the recs everyone!
@RikRoach7, Oceandrowned, etc.
I had a feeling I'd get questions about why I'm seeking out LGBTQ artists, so imma just give my reasons here. But first off, maybe "scene" wasn't the right word to use, so excuse that. But the reason I seek out music from LGBTQ voices is the perspective they bring to the table. Even something a simple as a love song can have an entirely different angle put on it when a gay person delivers it. Plus, on a more personal level, artists like Perfume Genius genuinely speak speak to me, and probably many other gay people who listen to him, on a personal level. Living in a place like Indiana can be frustrating; it makes me think twice about being my true self. But a song like "Just Like Love" or "Go Ahead" are really inspirational for me in that case.
I hope I explained my position well. Also yes, that blonde haired comparison is really dumb because I'm pretty sure blonde people haven't been denied the right to marry just based off their hair color and faced discrimination based off it either (unless I'm unknowing of something. There's been discrimination against left-handed people, anything is possible).
