Lars von Trier Ranked

The only correct ranking clearly.

Nyphomaniac Vol 1 & 2

Never actually watched this or plan to because it sounds like the dumbest most pretentious crap I've ever had described to me as a film.

The Idiots

Don’t have much to say about this one as I wasn’t able to make it through. The premise seemed intriguing but the pace and characterizations were really hard to go with. Might have to go back and watch this if enough people say it’s good.

Cruelty and the Beast

Melancholia

A very intriguing film about depression and the end of the world. The middle act is really drawn out and beats you over the head but the inevitable conclusion is as striking as it is poignant.

Dancer In The Dark

Holy crap a lot has been said about this movie. I’m very conflicted about it, on the one hand the movie is kind of a contrived mess filled with naked unashamed manipulation of the audience in order to hammer home the over-the-top melodrama to the point where it’s actually quite easy to poke fun at all the ridiculous plot-holes. On the other hand, the story at the film’s core is very sweet and touching, and Bjork, oh my god Bjork. I Love her oh so much in this to the point where I’ll forgive the film’s numerous faults.

Antichrist Superstar

Antichrist

One of the most powerful and uncomfortable films about the most horrible and personal grief imaginable, a parent losing a child. This on top of themes of primordial misogyny and mental illness as well as several horrifying can’t-ever-unsee moments, and you have the cinematic equivalent of that 1920’s razor-blade through-the-eyball gif.

Dogville

One of the best films I’ve ever seen hands down. I was so lost and confused when it started but by the end it felt like my heart had been ripped out. An extremely hard-to-watch film about township mentality and the sick truths underneath the facades that we can normalize and justify if enough people are willing to go with it. It also utilized one of the most brilliant gimmicks I've ever seen in a film, and the ensemble cast is insane.
