| Essential Old School Death Metal Bands
A list of 20(+1) "old school" death metal bands that you will want to have in your collection -
at least their early albums. Note that every band on this list released their first album in 1991 or earlier.
In most cases after 1993 or thereabouts the quality of the
albums declined dramatically. These are in alphabetical order, because it is too difficult and
arbitrary to create a numeric ranking. For each band, I list the essential
albums. In cases where a band may have changed sound, I restrict entries to death metal.
For example, Carcass started as a grindcore/goregrind band, so even though their first album (Reek of
Putrefaction) is tremendous and well worth having in your collection, I won't list it here. (But
