^ this would be a good starting guide, since these are kinda the "classic" bands of the style |
ComeToDaddy
05.26.17 | Yeah Thalassic just gave you a killer starting guide, though I think Esoteric's Paragon of Dissonance is the absolute best starting point for wading into funeral doom, it's a tad more melodic than their other works but still crushing.
Also nobody mentioned Corrupted or Ataraxie, who have several killer funeral doom albums |
Deathconscious
05.26.17 | he asked for more accessible funeral doom, which some of these recs arent imo, but i guess he'll figure it out. |

05.26.17 | Legends. That should keep me busy for a bit! |

05.26.17 | ComeToDaddy, I've just finished listening to track one of Paragon of Dissonance. Awesome! So good. And thanks for easing me in too. Exactly what I was chasing. Thanks! |

05.26.17 | Devouring humanity - s/t |
Thalassic
05.26.17 | ComeToDaddy, Corrupted and Ataraxie are both killer bands. I think they do have elements that could be akin to funeral doom, but neither are 100% funeral doom imo. Ataraxie is somewhere caught in the middle between doom/death and funeral doom, while Corrupted is more of a peculiar sludge + death/doom + post rock + dark ambient mixture.
Both terrific bands though, definitely don't sleep on them or other doom/death bands like Disembowelment, Winter, Mourning Beloveth... for that matter. |
ComeToDaddy
05.26.17 | Aye no worries bud, glad ya dug it. And yeah I defs agree on those points Thal, but that bit of crossover between death and doom on STA is definitely closer to funeral doom than most death/doom, and that kinda hybrid helps when you're getting into the genre. It's all good shit which is the most important part :)
Gonna add a big second on that new Shape of Despair Nud, bump that up the queue |
TheSpirit
05.26.17 | Arcana Coelestia - Le Mirage de l'ideal |
DungeonBoy
05.26.17 | I'm gonna rec this and probably get called out, but Swallow the Sun - The Morning Never Came is somewhere between melodic death metal and funeral doom, and would be a good gateway into the genre for something more accessible. |
