"Soul Punk"?!

So there's kind of a trend that I've been noticing with a lot of bands currently that play a style of punk music with a more melodic, catchy, heartfelt, and sometimes folk/americana inspired shit. Ya know, the type of shit that we can all relate to, shout along with, and get super wasted to. Lots of these bands seem to fall into categories like pop punk, folk punk, emo, etc. Lately I've been binging for these types of bands and been wanting to incorporate some of this into my original music. Hell, a band booking agent in my town advertised a gig for bands that sound like Gaslight Anthem, Menzingers, Hot Water Music, etc. These bands tend to get lumped together when being discussed. I remember that Rock Critic guy on youtube talk about bands like these, using the term "soul punk", a term that I've kind've grown fond of, though Patrick Stump kinda ruined it. Just wondering what you guys think of these types of bands? Is this a trend that's been going on for at least a decade? Could it someday be categorized as a real genre? Also feel free to mention some recs to check out since I've been binging hard.
