| AFI Ranked (fixed)
I felt inspired to rank AFI since I saw them live for the first time recently which was a long time coming. They did not disappoint. | | 13 | | AFI Burials
I’m not sure why I never really clicked with this album, but it doesn’t help that the production sounds like ass compared to their other albums. The instruments all blend together a lot of the time and it’s almost impossible to pick apart what’s going on. The guitars feel like a jumble, and there’s almost no riffs going on here, Jade just sounds asleep on this one. There are some great tracks here though, like Heart Stops which is the most infectious and unashamed pop song the band has ever done, and Greater Than 84 just hits so hard in the feels. | | 12 | | AFI Answer That and Stay Fashionable
It’s pretty mind-boggling that this band started their long musical journey as a straight-forward 4-chord punk band. This is practically a different band so it’s extremely hard to compare this to their later output. | | 11 | | AFI Very Proud of Ya
I prefer this to the previous one since the songs are even catchier, but this is literally more of the same with no progression. | | 10 | | AFI Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes
The band’s sole hardcore album. This one goes really hard but most of the tracks sort of blend together after a while. It’s pretty cool that they tried going in this direction but the album is kind of the red-headed step-child in their discography. This one is so dirty and abrasive that it’s almost hard to believe this is the band that would go on to make a record like Decemberunderground. Third Season is an album highlight for me. But how they went from Very Proud Of Ya, to this, to Black Sails will always remain a mystery to me… Certainly a very interesting progression, that’s for sure, and it only gets weirder from here. | | 9 | | AFI 336
This EP is a perfect blend of AOD and STS. Though it’s only two songs, this is some quintessential AFI right here. | | 8 | | AFI A Fire Inside
A massively underrated EP. The Hanging Garden cover is simply sublime, and 3 1/2 is like a bomb going off in your face; Davey screaming his brains out about choking on his own blood over raucous power chords really takes you back to a simpler time for the band. | | 7 | | AFI All Hallow's
Everything about this EP is so damn cool it makes me wish AFI had held onto this horror-punk gimmick for a little bit longer because it was such a good fit for them. All 4 tracks are barn-burners, and the cover-art just makes me happy for some reason. | | 6 | | AFI Crash Love
Really underrated album in my estimation. This easily contains some of Jade’s best guitarwork since Sing The Sorrow. The solo on Medicate is so bonkers that it actually outdoes the blazing lead on Dancing Through Sunday and It Was Mine is maybe the most underrated AFI closer ever; just 4 minutes of amazing lyrics and pure chills. Also the b-sides from this album are just pure fire. | | 5 | | AFI AFI (The Blood Album)
I didn’t like this album at first, the songs all felt too short and under-developed to me. But this has grown on me big time, and almost every song has now sunk in. Maybe the best thing about this album is that Jade is awake again and so the riffs are back which is so refreshing after the limp guitars on Burials. My sleeper hit on this is Pink Eyes, rocking the most emotional chorus since StS. Needless to say I am dying to hear the b-sids from this album. | | 4 | | AFI Decemberunderground
I hated this album when it came out because I just wanted Sing The Sorrow pt 2, and this wasn’t that. Once it settled though, this one always held a special place in my heart, especially since this is the last AFI record ever to feature screams. I believe Davey had undergone some vocal chord surgery just prior to this and had to change his screaming technique in order to not permanently injure himself. So you would think his screaming would be more subdued here, but the opposite is actually true… He just sounds like a beast on tracks like Kill Caustic and Affliction. This album is also very eclectic and varied. It features some of their most aggressive songs as well as their most mainstream and pop-oriented until this point, and they’re pretty much all single-material. | | 3 | | AFI The Art of Drowning
This album is the perfect blend of BSitS and StS. Lots of fast punk anthems with poppy hooks that are real ear worms. Hunter’s bass lines are just incredible and Jade has completely outdone himself on songs like Lost Souls, Nephilim, Days Of The Phoenix, and The Despair Factor. My personal favourite is Smile, a brief but lethal throwback to their hardcore days, and it just fucking decimates. | | 2 | | AFI Black Sails in the Sunset
Maybe my favourite punk record of all time? It’s really hard to listen to this and not feel a fire inside. I prefer this over AOD because it gels together better and feels more organic. Most of this album is comprised of very simple power chord progressions, but on a track like Clove Smoke Catharsis the guitar-work is just insane and foreshadows the beast that Jade would become after this album. | | 1 | | AFI Sing the Sorrow
This is the album that inspired me to pick up the guitar for the first time and learn every single song on this. This is pure nostalgia for a time when I was young, stupid, idealistic and in love, the soundtrack of my high school days. Every song on here is a stunning display of a band not just coming into their own, but transcending everything they made before and elevating their music to another plane. Every song on this is so personal and emotional, it’s like holding a bleeding, beating heart in your hands. I adore literally everything about it, but my standouts are The Great Disappointment, Death Of Seasons, Bleed Black, buthomeisnowhere, and This Time Imperfect. | |

03.21.17 | I was going to say, "Well at least you got the top 3 right. Huehuehue," and then I remembered those are the only three AFI albums I enjoy. | artiswar
03.21.17 | Well, those are the best and most universal ones so... 3 great albums in a row is pretty damn impressive unless you're completely jaded I guess. |
