Deftones Ranked

One of my fave bands since I was a kid. Here's how I rank their eclectic discography. I know it's not a popular order...

Diamond Eyes

This one is last purely by process of elimination. I like the record a lot, it’s full of great songs and the climax on Royal is just pulverizing. But for some reason I could never identify with this album like the others. Maybe I just never warmed up to Sergio and the loss of Chi Cheng left a bitter taste in my mouth when it comes to this one, as well as never getting Eros like I wanted. This just felt like an artificial reboot sort of, not an organic progression.

Koi No Yokan

Good album, really… Just not ‘my’ Deftones I guess. Not much to say. Entombed is amazing. I've probably listened to this one the least though.

Around the Fur

This album is a bit of a mess to me, yet still a classic. Some fantastic songs, some pretty forgettable filler. Mascara is just phenomenal… and MX.
5Deftones
Gore

I guess people really hate this record for some reason, but I think this is basically a career highlight… To me, this feels way more like Deftones than the previous 2 albums. (L)MIRL might be my favourite track of all time, and Phantom Bride just makes every hair stand on end, and that Jerry Cantrell solo at the end just catapults the song into another stratosphere.

Saturday Night Wrist

This one holds a truly special place in my heart. At the time of release I was in 11th grade and scouring the internet every 5 minutes searching for leaked tracks on forums and stuff. I wanted this album so badly… Though I love it, this is the least cohesive album the band ever made. Recorded in 3 different studios, this is the sound of a band utterly imploding through creative and personal differences. It’s kind of an experimental mess, but fuck if it isn’t pretty damn glorious; Beware, Cherry Waves, and Riviere are just…. Fuck…

Adrenaline

This is Deftones at their most raw and nu-metal, and some of these songs seem kind of vapid and shallow like Engine #9 and 7 Words. But then there’s songs like Birthmark and Fireal that have imprinted themselves pretty deeply on me. And between Root, Bored, and Minus Blindfold, this is a tour-de-force.
2Deftones
White Pony

What is there to say that hasn’t been said? This is the soundtrack of my teenage years. I lost my virginity to this album and many of these songs stayed in my fuck-mix for years to come. This is just lightning in a fucking bottle that will never be recaptured again. Basically their best and most important album.

Deftones

This one gets a lot of shit for not being the easiest listen. But to me this is quintessential Deftones. The low-end is fatter than on White Pony, and the songs themselves juxtapose the sleepy, dreamy side of the band with the ugly and unhinged side in a way that is so hypnotic I could spin this record every day for the rest of my life. If Deftones is fundamentally a tug-of-war between Chino and Steph, then this album is the most epic round in that old back-and-forth. Also, this is where the band started to totally come apart at the seams, and that results in an intangible desperation that just permeates every aspect of this record. It’s truly a rollercoaster of emotion; Never have head-banging grooves and dream-scapes come together in such tumultuous harmony. This is simply a journey into another world, really, one that will always stay with me.
