89th Academy Award Predicitons

It's that time again, the Oscar nominations have finally been announced. 2016 was a great year for movies in my opinion and I probably watched more movies than any previous year. These are my predictions. Here are the full list of nominees: http://oscar.go.com/nominees
1Justin Hurwitz
La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Best Picture: La La Land
As much as I want Arrival to win, there's no doubt in my mind that this is going to take it. This was a beautiful film and was arguably one of the best of last year. We rarely see films like this anymore and I think Damien Chazelle is really trying to bring back the so-called "Golden Age" of Hollywood back. Go see this is you haven't.
2Justin Hurwitz
La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Best Director: La La Land
Pretty much what I said before. With this and Whiplash, he's really turning out to be one of the best directors of this generation.
3blink-182
Neighborhoods

Best Actor: Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea)
I didn't see this movie because I hate being depressed while watching a movie, but after several years of being recognized in crap films it's nice to see little-Ben Affleck in a good role. Everyone's been talking about his performance in this so I feel like he's going to take this one.
4Stone Sour
Come What(ever) May

Best Actress: Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)
It's Meryl Streep so it's 95% likely that she's going to get this one. Really shocked that Amy Adams didn't get nominated for Arrival though, I was sure she would.
5Drive-by Truckers
American Band

Best Supporting Actor: Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)
An excellent film where even though he was the supporting role, Jeff Bridges pretty much stole the show every time he was on screen. Pretty easy choice for me.
6Soundtrack (Film)
Suicide Squad: The Album

Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis (Fences)
Never saw any of these films, but I did see Viola Davis in Suicide Squad and she was great in that film.
7Animals As Leaders
The Joy of Motion

Best Animated Film: Zootopia
It's Disney, plus this is WAY better than Moana.
8Dream Theater
The Astonishing

Best Cinematography: Arrival OR La La Land
I feel like Arrival is going to get most of the technical stuff because sci-fi, but then again it's a great film and the cinematography was one of the reasons why this film was amazing. That being said La La Land also deserves this as well.
9Rhapsody of Fire
Power of the Dragonflame

Best Costume Design: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
My theory for this category is that the further in the past the film takes place in, the more likely it's going to win.
10Dream Theater
The Astonishing

Best Film Editing: Arrival OR La La Land
It's either a musical or a sci-fi film, so either are likely winners.
11Unisonic
Light of Dawn

Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Star Trek Beyond
Alien makeup for the win.
12Justin Hurwitz
La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Best Original Score: La La Land
It's a musical. Surprised Arrival didn't get nominated for this considering the score was made by the same guy who did Sicario and that one was nominated.
13Justin Hurwitz
La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Best Original Song: La La Land
This got nominated twice for different songs, plus (again) it's a musical.
14Dr. Dre
Compton

Best Production Design: Hail Ceasar! OR La La Land OR Arrival
Hollywood tends to like films based on Hollywood when it comes to this category, but La La Land or Arrival are good candidates for this one as well.
15Queensryche
American Soldier

Best Sound Editing: Hacksaw Ridge
It's usually war films that end up winning this award so it's pretty likely that Hacksaw Ridge will take this one.
16Dream Theater
The Astonishing

Best Sound Mixing: Any of them
Quite a few war-like films in this category, not to mention Arrival and La La Land are in this because...well you pretty much know why.
17Breaking Orbit
The Time Traveller

Best Visual Effects: Doctor Strange
Superhero movies never really win this category but considering the Inception-like visuals in this I'm pretty sure Doctor Strange with win this one.
18Dream Theater
The Astonishing

Best Adapted Screenplay: Arrival OR Fences OR Hidden Figures
From what I hear Arrival is a pretty accurate adaptation to the short film that it was based off of (Story of Your Life), not to mention the science is also considered very possible as well. That being said, Hollywood tends to like films based on historical events so the other two are likely winners as well.
19Justin Hurwitz
La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Best Original Screenplay: La La Land OR Hell Or High Water
Both of these films are a part of genres that we don't really see anymore, so it's nice to know that people can still chalk up some great scripts from these so-called dead film genres.
