01.17.17 | wasn't this like based off a book series? i think i read this in like 4th grade |
BeyondCosby
01.17.17 | Yeah man, it was a book series... a really well written book series.
@fuckbatman you cared enough to comment. So there's that... |

01.17.17 | I remember loving the book series. It's been years since I've read them, I need to rectify that. I loved the show too, my wife and I binge watched it and I'm absolutely in love with its Wes Anderson meets Tim Burton feel aesthetic |
BeyondCosby
01.17.17 | I totally didn't pick up on the Wes Anderson vibe but you're right. |

01.17.17 | Super Wed Andersony yeah I love the way this is directed. So far the Wide Window is the weakest (Josephine was annoying/kind of stilted plotwise) and the Miserable Mill is the best by far. Really excited to see where it goes from here |
LepreCon
01.17.17 | I didn't know what to expect from it but I was delighted. I think because the kids are younger irl than the ones from the movie were at the time, their acting a alittle less refined but they'll surely improve, they were adequate! I was a huge fan of the book series except for the ending |

01.17.17 | I read the entire series during 4th and 5th grade. I'll probably watch this at some point. |
BeyondCosby
01.18.17 | @LepreCon Really? I loved the ending man. I thought it was amazing how, even though he was a terrible villain, we get a glimpse of humanity right at the end from Count Olaf. Even though his life has been comprised of horrible deeds, because his last act on earth is a heroic one it really hits home the power of one of the themes: that there is no pure good or evil; only shades of grey.
@Rowan5215 yeah I agree. The Wide Window isn't my favorite. I really dug The Reptile Room and The Miserable Mill though. |
Rowan5215
01.18.17 | the twist with the parents in the Miserable Mill is fucking fantastic, I had no idea it was coming. easily visually the best episodes and probably the best scripted too (the Reptile Room is great also, Monty best guardian 4ever) |

01.18.17 | i'm only 3 eps in but i'm loving it so far. altho i find the kid playing klaus really annoying, can't remember if i found him this annoying in the books. the monty and poe actors are great, so much so that they've replaced the images i'd formed of those characters |
BeyondCosby
01.18.17 | @Rowan5215 I agree. When they showed the parents at the end of the first episode I was really disappointed, but what they did with it in the Miserable Mill was spectacular. That scene really was a teaser for how brilliant the writing could get as the story progresses. |
Mordecai.
01.18.17 | I fucking adore this book series. I agree will all of your criticisms for the TV adaptation - we need to see more depth from the children, and I'm not sure if that's an issue with the writing or the actors. Overall, it's a great show with a charming oddball-gothic style. |
Rowan5215
01.18.17 | I never read the books as a kid - is it true it gets more philosophical and darker as it goes on cos I'm really looking forward to seeing that |
anat
01.18.17 | i can't remember the individual books 9-13, may need to revisit |
wwf
01.18.17 | The only thing I have to add to this is that Emily Browning when the movie was released was so unbelievably attractive to me and I didn't understand my burgeoning sexuality |
Rowan5215
01.18.17 | Emily Browning is incredibly gorgeous |
BeyondCosby
01.18.17 | @Mordecai I agree with your insight about the writing. It could be that the writers just need to provide the actors with more opportunities to really shine. Only time will tell though.
@Rowan5215 oh yeah the books get really deep. 1-5 are pretty much like the first four Harry Potter books in that they follow a basic plot cycle. Children get new guardian, Count Olaf shows up, Count Olaf dispatches of or seduces the new guardian, someone is killed, children thwart Count Olaf and move to next place. After book seven though the kids take off on their own and that's when it really gets exciting because they go from being hunted by Count Olaf to hunting him. And the last book honestly has a really emotional twist at the ending.
@anatelier do it. As an adult it's really fun to go back to the last half of the series and discover some of the hidden things that Lemony Snicket hid within scenes once he figured out the actual direction of the series. |

01.18.17 | I'm watching it right now, and I really do appreciate how macabre and melancholy this children's series is. Kids need entertainment that reflects and accepts all emotions I think; even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones. |
wwf
01.18.17 | I don't remember much anything about the book series since I read it a really long time ago but I did rewatch the movie a couple years ago and this is borderline exactly how I remember it. I also remember it feeling really rushed plot-wise and I think the tv series format will probably do it justice |

01.18.17 | I much prefer Jim Carey to be honest |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.18.17 | i admire the casting agents dedication to finding an actress to play violet who looks literally identical to the actress who played violet in the movie |
wwf
01.18.17 | I'm not sure if NPH is working in this part so far for me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.18.17 | i like him way better than jim carey for the role but i hate jim carey always |
wwf
01.18.17 | he plays it similarly to jim carrey though, just far, far, farrrrr more restrained
either way its more miss than hit |
UndineParty
01.18.17 | don't understand the 8.8/10 rating it is getting but I like the show.. |
neekafat
01.18.17 | @Lorde thought the same thing
I thought that Carey was more sinister and charming in a creepy way and Harris is just kinda a evil jerk. |
Rowan5215
01.18.17 | yeah NPH is better as Olaf. he's way way funnier if even if he doesn't have that sense of menace as much as Carrey did. Carrey just came off way too goofy sometimes |
BeyondCosby
01.18.17 | I think NPH hits his stride around the Reptile room when he threatens to cut off Sunny's toes. Until then I agree, he didn't have quite the same menage that Carrey had. |
anat
01.18.17 | been a long time since I saw the movie but I do like NPH as olaf, he seems to understand the role better |
TVC15
01.27.17 | I really like Carrey's Olaf more. Olaf's character is a bad actor and often these kind of character roles are hit or miss. Carrey had a sense of self-awareness while portraying him and that iconic improv "Give me that line again!" gave Olaf that much more character. For Neil, yeah he himself does a great job as Olaf, the script being a strict adaptation of the novel(s) doesn't give him as much freedom to further explore the character. Idk I think Jim communicates that mix of menace and over-the-top villain better than Neil who doesn't balance the two as well being more over-the-top than menacing. However, by the time the second season roles by I'm excited to see how Neil changes because he's a very good actor in drama films so it'll be interesting to see the growth in character |
neekafat
01.27.17 | ^^Def agree
NPH does get better as it goes on though, I feel like the more time he spends, the better he'll get |
