| Sounds' Top 50 of 2016
Great year tbh. I grew a lot as a person, and music helped that along. Here's to another sweet year. | 1 | | The Veils Total Depravity
Genre: Indie rock
My AOTY. Completely masterful in its atmosphere drenced in synth and reverb. Like being locked in an empty room with the band to listen to their stories. Don't pass this up if looking for missed 2016 stuff (as if I haven't screamed at you enough to listen to it!)
Favorite tracks: House of Spirits, Iodine and Iron, Total Depravity, Do Your Bones Glow At Night, A Bit on the Side | 2 | | Stimming Alpe Lusia
Genre: House
Perfectly crafted with layered and beautiful soundscapes is just one side of this LP, its emotions the other. I connected with this a couple nights in a row and it was just heavenly.
Favorite tracks: Whole thing tbh | 3 | | Jeff Rosenstock Worry.
Genre: Pop-punk/Indie rock
Jeff takes us on a trip through midlife crisis covering many lyrical topics, especially in the latter half where it's in short bursts. It's catchy, it's sloppy, and it's just as interesting every listen.
Favorite tracks: We Begged 2 Explode, Wave Goodnight To Me, I Did Something Weird Last Night, HELLLHOOOOLE, June 21st, Perfect Sound Whatever | 4 | | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree
Genre: Art rock/Ambient
Nick puts his grief on full display in very blunt, yet poetic lyrics. The ambient noises and his voice collide and make an emotional gripping album. It's heartbreaking man.
Favorite tracks: Jesus Alone, Girl in Amber, Anthrocene, Distant Sky | 5 | | Drei Affen Drei Affen
Genre: Skramz
Every member of the band is on point, not a flaw to be found. Just 20 minutes of in your face hardcore. It's not afraid to take a few moments to blow your mind with the buildups.
Favorite tracks: Whole thing | 6 | | Edamame Ochre
Genre: Downtempo
Like being lost in a dream, it has beautiful soundscapes much like Alpe Lusia(comparisons are needed since both are close for electronic AOTY). Makes me wanna live at wherever the cover is.
Favorite tracks: Tree Shadows, Ochre, So Flows a Current | 7 | | Agnes Obel Citizen Of Glass
Genre: Folk
Such an intimate album, I connected with this very quickly. Agnes' soothing voice and the intimate production draws you in fast. Damn pretty release!
Favorite tracks: Familar, Trojan Horses, Stone, It's Happening Again | 8 | | James Blake The Colour in Anything
Genre: Electronic/R&B
Very quickly you're brought into Blake's own world. His cold, cold one. The production is stellar and Blake couldn't have sounded better. The 70 minute runtime, rather than bring down the LP, only strengthens the album's impact.
Favorite tracks: Love Me In Whatever Way, Timeless, Put That Away and Talk to Me, I Need a Forest Fire, Always, gaah there are too many highlights | 9 | | Gold Panda Good Luck And Do Your Best
Genre: Downtempo
Posi vibes forever! An incredibly uplifting listen filled with tasty samples, beats, and themes. The first half is a bit better than the second, but the 2nd has Time Eater which is top 10 songs of the year.
Favorite Tracks: In My Car, Time Eater, Halyards, Song for a Dead Friend | 10 | | All Human Teenagers, You Don't Have to Die
Genre: Indie rock
This is a massive project spanning a bunch of vocalists and styles, but it ends up working in the end as a stunning listen.
Favorite tracks: And So Peter Dances, Where's my Upsole, Desert Fox Cubs, Don't Come Home, Asleep on the Church Steps | 11 | | Regina Spektor Remember Us To Life
Genre: Indie pop
Regina does it again! This is her most creative album in years, spanning sounds from all across her discog. The production lets everything shine and charm you.
Favorite tracks: Small Bills, Older and Taller, Trapper and the Furrier, Obsolete | 12 | | Blood Incantation Starspawn
Genre: Death metal
Jeez this vocalist sounds massive over the crushing riffs. Seriously give the producer a raise. Aside from that, the opening track is the best metal song of the year, and an incredibly atmospheric.
Favorite tracks: Vitrification of Blood (Parts 1 & 2), Starspawn | 13 | | Alcest Kodama
Genre: Blackgaze
Neige did exactly what I wanted him to do after Shelter (it was incredibly bland). He took the influences and made them fit into his own sound, comes with the melodies you've come to know associated with an Alcest LP
Favorite tracks: Kodama, Je Suis D’ailleurs, Oiseaux De Proie | 14 | | Doprah Wasting
Genre: Dream pop/trip hop
This has something for everything. A mix of ominous tracks and pop bangers. At first, they contrast each other negatively and feels like it's inconsistent. Further listens blend them together better.
Favorite tracks: San Pedro, Will I Be a Figure Eight, Borderline, Wool, Lucid Visions | 15 | | Trees of Eternity Hour Of The Nightingale
Genre: Doom metal
The vocalist is easily the best part about this. Complete melancholic beauty.
Favorite tracks: Broken Mirror, Eye of Night, Gallows Bird | 16 | | Massive Attack Ritual Spirit
Genre: Trip hop
The boys have are back strong. Good look into what's coming (this year hopefully). Massive Attack's sound modernized and the return of Tricky is welcome!
Favorite tracks: Dead Editors, Take it There | 17 | | Demdike Stare Wonderland
Genre: Minimal/Beats
A bit reserved, which works in its favor. It bares its precise beats and minimal atmosphere in the 2nd half more.
Favorite tracks: Curzon, Sourcer, Airborne Latency | 18 | | Marek Hemmann Moments
Genre: House
The songs progress so well
Favorite tracks: Venice, Mandrill, Joker | 19 | | Injury Reserve Floss
Genre: Hip-hop
A huuuuge step up from their debut. Bangers for days, mixed with jazz-rap tracks like from their debut. Both rappers spit crazy good and varied bars, with a production that jumps out at you.
Favorite tracks: Oh Shit!!!, All This Money, What's Goodie, Look Mama I Did It | 20 | | Pup The Dream Is Over
Genre: Pop-punk
Miles ahead of every other pop punk act right now, Pup takes the abrasive side of their debut and adds better songwriting, better lyrics, and more variation. It's very consistent and fun. Be ready for a good time and a bit of tasty lyrics.
Favorite tracks: DVP, Sleep in the Heat, Pine Point | 21 | | Anderson .Paak Malibu
Genre: Hip-hop/Soul
Good vibes all around. Vibrant production and great performances by every artist involved and especially Anderson.
Favorite tracks: The Bird, Put Me Thru, Room in Here, The Dreamer | 22 | | Lumisokea Transmissions From Revarsavr
Genre: Techno(?)
The atmosphere on this is insane, and it gets more and more unhinged as it goes.
Favorite tracks: Buk, Hyman Otor, Engrams | 23 | | Ulcerate Shrines of Paralysis
Genre: Death metal
Dense af, and at first I didn't like this, however with time it soon became the main reason why I loved it so much. Aside from the awesome performances by each member. | 24 | | Touche Amore Stage Four
Genre: Post-hardcore/Emo
The lyrics daaaamn. Coupled with intense instrumentation? It's solid and ends so well with Skyscraper
Favorite tracks: Rapture, Softer Spoken, Skyscraper | 25 | | Emma Ruth Rundle Marked For Death
Genre: Gothic/Singer-songwriter
Dark textures and a unique vocal performance by Emma make this as good as this is. Her almost shoegaze-like guitar waves are a special touch
Favorite tracks: Protection, Heaven, Real Big Sky | 26 | | Leon Vynehall Rojus
Genre: House
Makes me wanna dance and move, which is impossible to not do while listening to this. It also keeps layered beauty to keep you coming back for more.
Favorite tracks: Blush, Paradisea, Saxony | 27 | | Nicolas Jaar Sirens
Genre: Downtempo
A bit of a different feel to his previous works and a huuuge grower. It pays off well.
Favorite tracks: No, Three Sides of Nazareth, Killing Time | 28 | | The Hyacinth Act My Specialty
Genre: Ambient
https://hyacinth.bandcamp.com/album/my-specialty
User project by mindlevictus! Each song has logical progression and almost has crescendos of all the sounds of each song.
Favorite tracks: Dukkha II, My Target | 29 | | Danny Brown Atrocity Exhibition
Genre: Hip-hop
– One of the most hyped albums of the year. I feel like it would have been better if Danny applied himself more to fit with what the instrumentation is doing. This is drenched in a crazy deep atmosphere, and if you can get with it, you’ll enjoy.
Favorite tracks: Tell Me What I Don't Know, Really Doe, Ain't It Funny, When It Rain | 30 | | Joliette Atáxico
Genre: Hardcore
It's pummeling for the whole album, ending on a long that shows they can write long developing songs as well as short bursts.
Favorite tracks: Henry Coyote, Vibraparrot, Código | 31 | | Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas Mariner
Genre: Post metal/Sludge metal
Julie added a whole new depth to CoL's music, while CoL themselves are solid as ever. The two vocalists interplay and sound powerful af. | 32 | | Hikrahe Lily (The Wilt)
Genre: Downtempo
https://solarmasscollective.bandcamp.com/album/lily-the-wilt
User made album by LordePots! Vibrant samples (that Chrono Trigger one was so good tho) and great production, it's good vibes.
Favorite tracks: Manilla, Killa Kong, Forest Bathing | 33 | | Dangers The Bend in the Break
Genre: Hardcore
It's Dangers back again to kick our asses.
Favorite tracks: Kiss With Spit, The Bend in the Break, Loose Cigarettes | 34 | | Neurosis Fires Within Fires
Genre: Post metal/Sludge metal
It's great for a late career album, this time their craft is condensed to 40 minutes. They still end up sounding just as good as ever, nice step up from their last one too.
Favorite tracks: Fire Is the End Lesson, Broken Ground, Reach | 35 | | Red Giant (USA-NJ) Infinity
Genre: Trip hop
On tripper side of modern trip hop fo sho, the singer paired with that producer is a match made in heaven. Looking out for more from them soon!
https://weareredgiant.bandcamp.com/album/infinity
Favorite tracks: Infinity, Open, Boogie | 36 | | Vektor Terminal Redux
Genre: Thrash metal
Ambitious as hell. | 37 | | Bullion Loop The Loop
Genre: Indietronica
Good-ass pop indie songs, definitely something to keep an eye on
Favorite tracks: My Lar, Never Is the Change | 38 | | Negative Gemini Body Work
Genre: Electronic/Dream pop
Could have used more vocal tracks but the production is insanely good and has a character of its own.
Favorite tracks: Body Work, Don't Worry Bout the Fuck I'm Doing, Hold U | 39 | | Bruno Mars 24K Magic
Genre: Pop
Bruno went back in time to the 80s and created this infectious banger. And he finally wrote some good ballads!
Favorite tracks: 24k Magic, Versace on the Floor, Too Sad to Say Goodbye | 40 | | Kishi Bashi Sonderlust
Genre: Indie pop
The first half is a bit better than the 2nd, but it all feels good and this dude has one hell of a songwriting touch/voice.
Favorite tracks: m'lover, Say Yeah, Ode to My Next Life, Who'd You Kill | 41 | | Sturgill Simpson A Sailor's Guide To Earth
Genre: Country
Sturgill puts out a lyrical gold mine for his son, while also keeping a lot of great songwriting by including jazz and blues elements to his brand of alt country.
Favorite tracks: Sea Stories, Live a Little, Call to Arms | 42 | | Stiu Nu Stiu Fake End
Genre: Post punk/Gothic
Atmospheric with the combination of the female lead voice and guitars. It's dark and infectious.
Favorite tracks: Aegna Saar, Blodmyra, Memo | 43 | | Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
Genre: Indie rock
Favorite tracks: The Ballad, Drunks Drivers/Killer Whales, Drugs with Friends | 44 | | Thy Catafalque Meta
Genre: Experimental black metal
It's...weird
Favorite tracks: Sirály, Malmok járnak, Vonatút az éjszakában | 45 | | Deathspell Omega The Synarchy of Molten Bones
Genre: Black metal
Comes straight from hell
Favorite tracks: Famished for Breath, Onward Where Most with Ravin I May Meet | 46 | | Weezer The White Album
Genre: Pop rock
It's fun and good vibes for the whole family.
Favorite tracks: Wind In Our Sail, Jacked Up, California Kids | 47 | | An Autumn For Crippled Children Eternal
Genre: Blackgaze
Typical blackgaze with great melodies.
Favorite tracks: this small space you occupied is so empty now | 48 | | Darkthrone Arctic Thunder
Genre: Black metal/Crust punk
Favorite tracks: Tundra Leech, Inbred Vermin | 49 | | Massive Attack The Spoils

"honestly touche has gotten weaker instrumentally with each album"
Stage 4 is the only Touche I've heard so far, it might a combination of the vocals and instrumentation to give off and intense feel | ZippaThaRippa
01.10.17 | Yeah Touche Amore used to be a lot harder. They softened with the years, became more emotive and less angry. | theBoneyKing
01.10.17 | Good stuff buddy, nice to see Sturgill here. Would have though Kodama would make your top 10 though. | FullOfSounds

Thanks for the love btw guys | Artuma
01.10.17 | cool list man, a couple of my favorites here, just a couple of questions:
1. don't you think the "crust punk" tag on 5 is sorta misleading? 2. and is the new darkthrone really bm/crust (because that's what i hope it would be but judging from that one single i heard it's more of a neo-thrash album)? 3. and do you think 30 is my cup of tea (because it seems to be so but i'm not sure)? | theBoneyKing
01.10.17 | Congrats on the feature dude | AmericanFlagAsh
01.10.17 | Didn't know Agnes released a new album. Cheers. | Snake.
01.10.17 | oh yeah 5 is just straight up skramz | AsleepInTheBack
01.10.17 | oh btw FoS, cheers for hyping up 5 somewhere (I think the Old Gray Thread?), convinced me to check it and it made by number 5 spot too | FullOfSounds
01.10.17 | Thanks Art! I fixed the tag on 5, a couple of people were telling me it was crust punk instead but I always thought it was skramz myself. As far as I know, the new Darkthrone has remnants of their crust era. Idk didn't really see any thrash in it. And you'd love 30, in your face hardcore galore. | FullOfSounds
01.10.17 | Cheers Ash and Asleep
Gotta give props to Xking for originally hyping up Drei tho | L4titudes
01.11.17 | Nice man!!Pretty interested in 32 35 and 42 | FullOfSounds

01.12.17 | solid list my man! | Sevengill
01.12.17 | I really ought to check out some of the non-metal stuff, because I've been lacking in that lately. | FullOfSounds
01.13.17 | Yeah Seven you might enjoy 22 | theBoneyKing
01.13.17 | Full I gotta say the most shocking thing about this in retrospect is that you only ranked Kodama one spot ahead of me ;-) | FullOfSounds
01.14.17 | Just realized I forgot Oathbreaker fuuuuu | Drifter
04.13.22 | good shit |
|
