2016...a shitty year with some good music
Album list of the best releases of the year in my opinion. Feel free to recommend stuff you think I might like or possibly have forgotten!
Some things are on my list, but I haven't had time to listen to it yet and I am still hoping that, like Batushka did in 2015, just in the very end of the year, when everybody already made their lists of AOTY...something will be released that tops my list.
I have discovered some things only this year:
Lost Soul - Atlantis: the New Beginning - this would be at the top of my list if it came out this year
Spectral Lore - III - this would be in my top 5 if it came out this year
Nightbringer - Ego Dominus Tuus - this would be in the top 5 if it came out this year |
12 | | Vipassi Śūnyatā
Instrumental Death Metal from Australia
I enjoyed this very much, you can clearly hear the Ne Obliviscaris influence even though the style is somewhat different |
11 | | Negura Bunget ZI
Black metal from Romania with folk influences
I liked this album a lot, it's probably their best since "om", which ist still their best release |
10 | | Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas Mariner
progressive / sludge metal
A very solid release, it took me some time to get used to the vocals but in the end I enjoyed it very much. |
9 | | Entropia (PL) Ufonaut
progressive / black metal
I enjoyed this very much - a good mix between different styles. |
8 | | Aenaon Hypnosophy
They have some really nice ideas, the first track completely blew me away. If the rest of the album had a similar quality and the "heavy metal vocals" sounded a bit better, this would be way up in the list. |
7 | | Mare Cognitum Luminiferous Aether
Atmospheric black metal
I quite enjoyed this album, although just a little bit less than "Phobos Monolith". |
6 | | Skuggsja Skuggsja: A Piece for Mind & Mirror
Progressive Metal with black metal and folk influences
I really like the atmoshpere of the album, although it has some passages that I consider to be too repetitive. |
5 | | Oranssi Pazuzu Värähtelijä
Psychedelic / progressive black metal - solid release.
I like this album a lot although sometimes it felt a bit too much like a jam session. The predecessor had a darker vibe imho. |
4 | | Ihsahn Arktis.
Progressive Metal - solid release.
I quite like this Ihsahn release, although it cannot reach the quality of "After". |
3 | | Alcest Kodama
BM with postrock and shoegaze influences - very solid release.
I have followed Alcest since their debut album, however this is my favorite release with the exception of "écailles de lune". |
2 | | Hail Spirit Noir Mayhem In Blue
Weird / progressive BM from greece - phenomenal record as well.
Just discovered them recently and what a gread find it was. |
1 | | Schammasch Triangle
BM with doomy influences - phenomenal Album.
Black Metal from my fellow countrymen. Have known of their existence since a long time but since Switzerland does not produce a lot of good music it took me some time until I gave them a chance. This year I finally checked them out and went to theri concert immerdiately after - it was well worth giving them a chance. |
