DoofusWainwright 12.10.16	Tindersticks and Lambchop for a start - and I've rated about a combined 50 of their albums lol Then you check Fugazi who are way more alternative rock and they don't have a genre label. Slowdive are more alt rock too...no alt rock label. The Sput genre labels are a mystery

DoofusWainwright 12.10.16	There isn't a 'chamber pop' genre is there? If not maybe 'soul'? They used to be more 'indie rock' early in their career so that's ok at a push. TBH they're more pop or folk than rawk. RYM has them chamber pop, ambient, orchestral so yeah not really alt rock at all Alt rock you think 'noisy electric guitars'. You think 'distortion' and 'feedback'. You probably think screamed or rawk vocals. Tindersticks has none of those elements.

DoofusWainwright 12.10.16	Alt rock. First three bands I think of...Nirvana, Pixies and Sonic Youth. That's the exact description of a large portion of their musical output

DoofusWainwright 12.10.16	Grunge is a subset of alt rock so that's a good start. Emo is another sub genre of alt rock I'd say. Pop punk too maybe?
TVC15 12.10.16	I think of Muse, Jane's Addiction, and Manic Street Preachers concerning alt rock... Punk is always the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Nirvana
DoofusWainwright 12.10.16	So for your pie chart what is taken as a tag? If one person has voted alt rock for an album will it show up on the pie as alt rock? Or is it just the 'winning' top genre with the most votes that counts?

MillionDead 12.10.16	Cool list! Also to Doofus, Sonic Youth is noise rock before alt rock, for me. Depending on which emo you mean, it'd either be a subgenre of indie rock (midwest emo) or of hardcore punk (emocore). And I think Fugazi is tagged pretty correctly on here.

Storm In A Teacup 12.10.16	subset 7, 2 just made me realize that while metalheads got to enjoy domination of this site early on, I was still comfortable being a user who mainly pushed and discussed alternative rock. I was basically the second major party that was elected to 1 of the 3 branches of US government. And I dabbled in metal a lot so I was basically establishment too, but just not an extremist. My head was in the sand this whole time, but now I realize, I am elite.

ArsMoriendi 12.10.16	For sure, artists who change their sound frequently get screwed over in the regard The fact that rating PJ Harvey's White Chalk will raise your alt rock % and Dry will raise your folk % is ridiculous.
MillionDead 12.10.16	To Mac, I feel like it's really interesting to see the progression from just publishing to genre. I feel like it started off as a lot of bands sounding like softer, contemplative, laid back rock music were calling themselves or being called indie because they were independent and then it just stuck. I mean, when you think about it, any rock band without a label or self published could be called indie in that sense. Also, genres by album would be a smart thing, or at least more thorough.

MillionDead 12.10.16	I dunno. Fugazi is in a weird place with their feet in a lot of different sonic territory. I feel like it sort of makes their fanbase eclectic. Like full of "smart" punks and alt rock fans and indie fans etc. I definitely feel like the image of indie is what draws a lot of people. I don't think about it much, but it's weird how indie rock still thinks of itself as alternative even though it's largely one of the most user friendly, accessible, and marketable types of rock. Like everybody whose in their twenties probably listen to at least some.
macman76 12.10.16	Right, indie rock was pretty quickly put into commercials and probably cocktail parties, whereas death or black metal, which are much more independent than your vamp weekends or Tegan and Sara's, would never be mainstreamed like that
