Favorite Black Metal Album Each Year Since Birth
I was born in '93, and I wanted to see what my favorite Black Metal album was each year since I was born. Some years took much soul searching and were incredibly difficult to decide, but this is what I came up with. |
1 | | Dissection The Somberlain
1993. Meloblack is best Black. Fight me. |
2 | | Burzum Hvis lyset tar oss
1994 |
3 | | Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
1995, Dissection again |
4 | | Vinterland Welcome My Last Chapter
1996. More Meloblack, and to me, this album is the epitome of Meloblack. So perfect. |
5 | | Borknagar The Olden Domain
1997 |
6 | | Diabolical Masquerade Nightwork
1998. Really unique album; always a good listen. |
7 | | Agalloch Pale Folklore
1999. Favorite album of all time. |
8 | | Sirius Aeons Of Magick
2000. INCREDIBLE Symphonic Black Metal. Anybody a fan of the style needs to check this album out, it doesn't get nearly enough credit. |
9 | | Windir 1184
2001. Best Windir album. |
10 | | Immortal Sons of Northern Darkness
2002. Always a fun listen. |
11 | | Moonsorrow Kivenkantaja
2003. EPIC in every sense of the word. |
12 | | Blodsrit Helveteshymner
2004. Another album I don't think gets nearly enough credit. Great melodies to go along with the aggression. If you're a fan of Sargeist, check this out. |
13 | | Moonsorrow Verisakeet
2005. I know Kivenkantaja was already EPIC ine very sense of the word, but oh man, this takes it up another notch. |
14 | | Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
2006. Another one of my favorite albums of all time. |
15 | | Lunar Aurora Andacht
2007. The PERFECT combination of atmosphere and aggression you would come to expect/love from a Black Metal record. |
16 | | Evilfeast Lost Horizons of Wisdom
2008. Incredible one-man Atmospheric Black Metal from Poland. It's like Burzum, but way better. The title track, My Tower Among the Timeless Mountains, and Grim Spirit, the Forest Wanderer are standouts, though the entire album is great. |
17 | | Nokturnal Mortum The Voice of Steel
2009. Perfect album. The cleans in Ukraine, the intro in My Dream Islands, the epic closer in White Tower... it doesn't get much more perfect than this. |
18 | | Agalloch Marrow of the Spirit
2010. Not their strongest effort, but it's Agalloch. Shoutouts go to Ecailles de Lune, Inferno of Sacred Destruction, Let the Devil In, and The Mercian Sphere. |
19 | | Evilfeast Wintermoon Enchantment
2011. Not QUITE as good as Lost Horizons of Wisdom in my opinion, but still absolutely incredible Atmo BM. Any fan of Burzum who may not have heard this guy needs to get on this shit. |
20 | | Svartidaudi Flesh Cathedral
2012. Top tier dissonant Icelandic BM. The Icelandic bands have really come on strong as of late, and this is the crowning opus in my opinion. |
21 | | Caladan Brood Echoes Of Battle
2013. Summoning ripoff band, but I love Summoning, and in this case, I think the pupil has surpassed the master. I've never been this engrossed by anything Summoning has ever released. Shoutout to Vallendusk's "Black Clouds Gathering" though. Another one of my absolute favorites, also released this year. |
22 | | Mare Cognitum Phobos Monolith
2014. Mare Cognitum is incredible space-themed Atmospheric Black Metal, with a bit of melodic leads thrown in here and there. Great blend of the two styles, which is made even more apparent in their 2016 release, "Luminiferous Aether". |
23 | | Mgla Exercises in Futility
2015. Another perfect Black Metal record. Idk what it is about it, but I've listened to it probably 50 times and it just doesn't get old. Solid fucking record. Shout-outs to Batushka, Enisum, Ethereal Shroud, and Mysthyrming. Strong year all-around. |
24 | | Ellende Todbringer
2016. Mare Cognitum's "Luminiferous Aether" would have been my choice for top BM record this year up until I heard this record a few days ago. One of the best post-BM records I've heard in a long time. |
