20 Albums I've Listened to In 2016
List of albums I have at least given a few spins thus far this year. Haters hate. Cool sput recs for things I've missed or need to try again would be awesome! |
20 | | Avenged Sevenfold The Stage
On first listen I was so hyped just because of the musicianship that I've missed from City of Evil and Waking the Fallen. But in retrospect, I think the timing at which I heard those (City of Evil in particular) was the determining factor of my interest. I can't fucking do Shadows vocals, I just can't. 2.7 |
19 | | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree
I've listened to some of Nick Cave's stuff and really like his approach to songwriting. But GODDAMN if this isn't the most depressing thing I've ever heard. Probably need to give it another chance. 2.8 |
18 | | Bon Iver 22, A Million
Really like some of the stuff on here, and really don't like some of the other stuff. The bleeps and bloops get to be a little tiring after a while. Will listen to more. For now..... 2.9 |
17 | | Dangers The Bend In The Break
Loooooooove these guys. But wtf?!?! Everything is played at half the tempo and it feels like all the riffs are lazy and just leaning on production value to stay interesting. Maybe I'm being cynical because its not Anger 2 or Messy, Isn't It? 2, but c'mon guys. (I still like it just because Al is Al) 3.1 |
16 | | Russian Circles Guidance
My first time listening to a Russian Circles album front to back. Really dug the overall feel, instrumentation, and room to breathe. When it goes, it goes hard. But the bits of silence between the chaos is perfectly placed. 3.3 |
15 | | Trophy Eyes Chemical Miracle
My first release with this band. Reminds of what Balance and Composure were trying to do on their first album, but much better. Will probably bump this up in the future. 3.4 |
14 | | O'Brother Endless Light
Really liked this when it first came out, but lasting value is lacking as the year goes by. Still great vibe on this album. 3.4 |
13 | | Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool
I was kind of underwhelmed by this release, all the songs are amazing on their own, but the album as a whole tends to drone on in a very over comfortable manner. However, Daydreamer is probably my favorite all-time song from these dudes. 3.5 |
12 | | Architects All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us
Have not been a fan of these guys since Hollow Crown, but I feel like they finally got the ambient/doomy/metalcore wall of sound they were going for on the past two releases. Works. 3.6 |
11 | | letlive. If I'm the Devil...
Really took a while to grow on me. That being said I like the new direction minus some of the Fall Out Boy arrangements/production (see Copper Colored Quilt). Either way, boys are still on track in my book, can't wait to see what they put out next. 3.7 |
10 | | Yndi Halda Under Summer
Wonderful return from these lads. Not a fan of the excessive vocals, but beautiful nonetheless. 3.8 |
9 | | Night Verses Into the Vanishing Light
Direction is interesting, and although I'm a fan of the more straightforward post-hardcore attitude of this album's predecessor (obviously, have you seen this fucking list) this has grown on me immensely. 3.9 |
8 | | Glass Animals How To Be A Human Being
Ear candy at its best. I'd put this on the same level as DGD (minus any musical similarity) with stupid fun. Like "Pineapples are in my, I got nobody 'cuz I'm brain dead." Really? Love it the same haha. 3.9 |
7 | | David Bowie Blackstar
The king will always reign, life or death are no concern. Blackstar is the proof. 4.0 |
6 | | Deftones Gore
This overall album rating dipped to 3.6?!?! I think it's on par with Koi No Yokan, ya'll bitchez are crazy. 4.1 |
5 | | Chevelle The North Corridor
Did not expect to like this nearly as much as I did. They brought back the Wonder What's Next feel to these jams, and it rips. 4.1 |
4 | | Dance Gavin Dance Mothership
Album is way too much fun. Stupid fun, but fun. 4.3 |
3 | | Norma Jean Polar Similar
Love all the sludgy slow and punk fast paced heaviness. Enough said. 4.4 |
2 | | Every Time I Die Low Teens
Total fanboy with this band so no surprise. That being said the order of tracks makes no sense and Two Summers should be replaced by Nothing Visible; Ocean Empty and Awful Lot needs a lyric transplant. Would have been gold otherwise. 4.6 |
1 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
After listening to this a million times I can't wait to hear the tracks that will be scrapped together from these recording sessions. So sad to see them go, but with a bang that being said. 5.0 |
