500 ratings + recs

Listened to 500 records. Was pretty fun. The thing I love about music is the seemingly never-ending amount of ‘essential’ records that exist. Sure you might not like everything you come across, but the constant cycle of going from record to record and delving deeper into some of the more obscure genres is as addictive as it is fascinating and humbling; there are some incredible musicians, song-writers and composers out there and it’s a joy to listen to their work. With all of that in mind, here are some cool records, some obvious and some less so. I’m gonna try keep it confined to stuff I think needs more attention, though there are some popular ones thrown in here and there. Oh, and rec me some of your 5s so I can steal them. Cheers Sput.
1The Dillinger Escape Plan
Calculating Infinity

Been putting off listening to these guys for ages, partially due to the apparent inaccessibility that is the first track. However, the hype around ‘Dissociation’ encouraged me to persevere and I couldn’t be happier. I thought it was just going to be a math-y showy snooze fest, but the guys fit an absurd amount of variety and fury into this record, really took me aback. 3.9/5.
2Horse Lords
Hidden Cities

I know I bang on about these guys on pretty much every rec thread, but they’re worth checking if you haven’t; its quirky DIY mathsy jazzy psychedelic stuff with some electronic elements. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and is incredibly easy to get sucked into. 4.1/5
3Catch 22
Keasbey Nights

Do you like energetic, vibrant music packed with charm and character? Well of course you do, so check this. 4.3/5.
4The Microphones
It Was Hot We Stayed In The Water

Phil’s music always stirs up a weird conflicting bundle of emotions for me: sadness, claustrophobia and loneliness, tinged with hopefulness. This record is a far more relaxing listen than ‘The Glow Pt.2’, despite having its fair share of nonsensical moments, and whilst it is certainly a worse album its worth a spin for any fans of Phil’s fuzzy multi-instrumental lo-fi-ness. 3.8/5.
5American Football
American Football EP

Seriously needs more love around these parts. Its quite confusing how relatively few votes this thing has when compared to their full length. Gorgeous late 90s emo. 3.8/5.
6Spiritualized
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Best breakup record ever, for far more complex reasons than a single ‘on the surface’ listen will yield. 4.5/5.
7Against Me!
Crime as Forgiven By

Whilst their 2014 record is pretty special in its own way, I think this will forever be my go to Against Me! record, matched in passion and vigour only by the Acoustic EP and Reinventing Axel Rose. 4.7/5.
8The Hotelier
It Never Goes Out

Excessively under-loved relative to Home. I mean, its far more pop punk and the lyrics aren’t as good, but by pop punk standards this is incredible. 4.3/5.
9Ween
GodWeenSatan: The Oneness

All praise Ween. This is their best album that I’ve heard, though admittedly I’m still only about half way through their discography. Perfect musical comedy in my opinion, chiefly due to how their brand of humor always has an underlying feeling of reality and depression. Its obviously more prevalent on records like Quebec and often buried very deep in the music. Further, you’d be forgiven for failing to find a grain of seriousness in a certain few of their songs (for I’m not sure that it is present). The point I am so poorly making is that their style highlights the fundamental sadness that bubbles beneath the surface of many who use humor as an escape. And it’s a hella fun album, so that’s something. 4.6/5.
10TotorRo
Come to Mexico

Just reviewed this little math rock gem, go jam it. 4/5.
11Frank Turner
Sleep Is For The Week

Listen to Frank Turner. Do it. If ‘Worse Things Happen At Sea’ doesn’t give you shivers then we cant be friends. 4.5/5.
12Clever Girl
No Drum And Bass in the Jazz Room

Super comforting math rock, seemingly taking a few pointers from American Football. Lovely stuff. 4.2/5.
13Car Seat Headrest
Teens of Denial

This actually gets quite a bit of love on Sput, but I’m a huge fan so I’m gonna mention it here. Perfectly summarizes in a charming way the woes of the life of a 20-something year old, and it has so many memorable moments. Can’t recommend this enough. 5/5.
14Big Black
Songs About Fucking

Has a fair amount of love for it on Sput, but could always use more. Super fun, energetic and noisy jams with attitude and a really weird album composition. 4/5.
15Julien Baker
Audiotree Live Session

A wonderfully imitate live performance from an up and coming singer songwriter – Beautiful stuff 4.4/5.
16JANK
Versace Summer

A silly, yet really well put together emo EP, reminding us that emo doesn’t have to be sad. 3.9/5.
17Brainiac
Electro-Shock for President

Really quirky noise rock EP, shame these guys were cut short when they were as they had a great future ahead of them. 3.6/5.
18Lost Salt Blood Purges
Only the Youngest Grave

Pretty neat neo-folk user project. Drags on a little longer than I think it justifies, but it has some really good ideas scattered along its playtime, and really impressive for a user release. 3.6/6.
19Racing Glaciers
Caught in the Strange

Really pretty and varied atmospheric indie rock project from a band that deserves more attention than they’ve been given. 4/5.
20Culture Abuse
Peach

Catchy, barebones pop rock. 3.5/5. Also figured I’d take a moment to say thanks to some fellow Sputters who make the site so pleasant to visit. I could list near everyone that I’ve met, but special shout outs to Blushful Hippocrene, Ashcrash9, Conmaniac, Artuma, FullOfSounds, Onionbubs, ArsMoriendi, snide, Minty901, YetAnotherBrick, ex-Cl0ver, Futures, Polyethylene and Sowing, as well as many many others that I’ve had a worthwhile conversation with. The sheer amount of recs I owe some of you guys for is absurd, so cheers fellas.
