Listened to 500 records. Was pretty fun. The thing I love about music is the seemingly never-ending amount of ‘essential’ records that exist. Sure you might not like everything you come across, but the constant cycle of going from record to record and delving deeper into some of the more obscure genres is as addictive as it is fascinating and humbling; there are some incredible musicians, song-writers and composers out there and it’s a joy to listen to their work. With all of that in mind, here are some cool records, some obvious and some less so. I’m gonna try keep it confined to stuff I think needs more attention, though there are some popular ones thrown in here and there. Oh, and rec me some of your 5s so I can steal them. Calculating Infinity
Been putting off listening to these guys for ages, partially due to the apparent inaccessibility that is the first track. However, the hype around ‘Dissociation’ encouraged me to persevere and I couldn’t be happier. I thought it was just going to be a math-y showy snooze fest, but the guys fit an absurd amount of variety and fury into this record, really took me aback. 3.9/5. | | 2 |  | Horse Lords
Hidden Cities
I know I bang on about these guys on pretty much every rec thread, but they’re worth checking if you haven’t; its quirky DIY mathsy jazzy psychedelic stuff with some electronic elements. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and is incredibly easy to get sucked into. 4.1/5 | | 3 |  | Catch 22

It Was Hot We Stayed In The Water
Phil’s music always stirs up a weird conflicting bundle of emotions for me: sadness, claustrophobia and loneliness, tinged with hopefulness. This record is a far more relaxing listen than ‘The Glow Pt.2’, despite having its fair share of nonsensical moments, and whilst it is certainly a worse album its worth a spin for any fans of Phil’s fuzzy multi-instrumental lo-fi-ness. 3.8/5. | | 5 |  | American Football

Crime as Forgiven By
Whilst their 2014 record is pretty special in its own way, I think this will forever be my go to Against Me! record, matched in passion and vigour only by the Acoustic EP and Reinventing Axel Rose. 4.7/5. | | 8 |  | The Hotelier
It Never Goes Out
Excessively under-loved relative to Home. I mean, its far more pop punk and the lyrics aren’t as good, but by pop punk standards this is incredible. 4.3/5. | | 9 |  | Ween
GodWeenSatan: The Oneness
All praise Ween. This is their best album that I’ve heard, though admittedly I’m still only about half way through their discography. Perfect musical comedy in my opinion, chiefly due to how their brand of humor always has an underlying feeling of reality and depression. Its obviously more prevalent on records like Quebec and often buried very deep in the music. Further, you’d be forgiven for failing to find a grain of seriousness in a certain few of their songs (for I’m not sure that it is present). The point I am so poorly making is that their style highlights the fundamental sadness that bubbles beneath the surface of many who use humor as an escape. And it’s a hella fun album, so that’s something. 4.6/5. | | 10 |  | TotorRo

Teens of Denial
This actually gets quite a bit of love on Sput, but I’m a huge fan so I’m gonna mention it here. Perfectly summarizes in a charming way the woes of the life of a 20-something year old, and it has so many memorable moments. Can’t recommend this enough. 5/5. | | 14 |  | Big Black

Peach
Catchy, barebones pop rock. 3.5/5. Also figured I’d take a moment to say thanks to some fellow Sputters who make the site so pleasant to visit.
