10.22.16 | Rotten Tomatoes is awful.
But it's because it's essentially murdering film criticism by reducing complex discussion and analysis to individual 10 word soundbites and stripping all the rhetoric of its nuance through reduction to an arbitrary statistic.
It's a pretty shit site. |
Storm In A Teacup
10.22.16 | @climactic no

zaruyache
10.22.16 | "It's a pretty shit site."
All it does is aggregate reviews that already exist in order to form a general consensus based on those reviews. All it does it better showcase what people who write reviews think about a given film or program. People using it as an objective source of film appraisal are the problem, not the site itself. The people who should be taking criticism are the ones actually writing crap reviews for crap films imo. |

10.23.16 | Actually, I kind of like Rotten Tomatoes. As long as you realize what it's about, and understand that the number they give a movie is just based on the percentage of critics that gave the movie a positive review, it can be a useful tool. For my tastes, most mainstream critics tend to drastically overrate so-called serious drama films, and they're pretty clueless on certain genres like horror films. But as long as you know that stuff going in, you know what you're getting. (Personally, i wouldn't have gone to see the new "Ghostbusters" movie if you had a gun to my head, no matter what they rated it). |

Also RT is still unreliable because it counts critics that give a movie a C as a positive review and stuff; doesn't take into account how mixed their thoughts are or anything like that from I could tell |
Valkoor952
10.23.16 | 85% of the time, RT actually gives you good expectations of what to expect from a certain movie. Don't just watch the percentage either, look at the average rating of the critics as a movie can have 91% but an average rating of 6.5/10. The percentage only shows how many reviews were positive, doesn't mean a movie with 95% is the greatest thing ever, especially if its avg rating isn't all that good.

like who really gives a shit about critics' opinions? or any other peoples' for that matter? i mean, on the one hand, it's useful as sort of a general guideline of "i know very little about this movie, let me check the percentage and see if i should shell out money to go see it. oh, 22%? nah, i'll probably wait for netflix". but beyond that, it's pretty pointless.
having said that, i do watch some reviewers like the red letter media guys and brad jones's midnight screenings, but that's more because i just find them funny. |

Reviewers in various publications have come out and said they're frequently pressured to dumb down the analytical content of their righting in favor of being more simply "I liked this/this was some bullshit." Whether you have a problem with the RT format or not, it (and other sites like it) are changing the way criticism is handled, and not for the better. |

Basic bitch aggregation. There's really no criteria that separates the good from the classic except for quantity. If all of the reviews were positive giving it 6/10 it would have 100%. It also goes the other way. A movie receiving all negative reviews with a 3/10 could potentially be the worst movie ever on Rotten. Not a good site except for a quick glance while you're in line at the theater to make sure you're not seeing a totally shit film. |

10.23.16 | I just use it to determine if something is either a must-see or a don't-bother. Like, I had no intention of watching Love & Friendship -- the Jane Austen adaptation with Kate Beckinsale -- until it got a 98%, so I watched it and, surprise, I loved it even though that's not my usual fare. On the other hand, even with my trashy taste, Gods of Egypt's sub-10% took it out of the running entirely. |

10.23.16 | I don't know who any critics are by name.

Storm In A Teacup
10.23.16 | I've used Rotten Tomatoes for about 23 seconds of my life. Movie reviews are the most uninteresting thing in the world to me that I haven't ever looked at just know they exist. |
Impervious
10.23.16 | First, Suicide Squad was a fucking mess. I don't think the Extended Cut will give anything extra to fix that spectacular fuck up, besides serving up more disappointment since DC is on such a clear path already.
And Rotten Tomatoes has been really good at giving great unknown movies the spotlight for me. It brought me to movies I didn't know existed like Whiplash, It Follows, and Snowpiercer, all movies with a limited release theaters. When it comes down to a movie I want to see, RT gives me an idea of how well it's received by crititcs but I don't check the percentage only. Most critics offer a little blurb to describe what they felt and there's plenty I agree with, and plenty I do not. We're on a music review site...you're gonna find some things that you absolutely despise yet find people who think it's film of the year.
If I wanted a full movie review that I think will tell exactly if I want to see a movie or not, I'd rather see an individual's opinion whom has similar tastes with me. Chris Stuckmann has been my go to for a while and he's pretty thorough about why he does/doesn't like something without giving away spoilers. |

BvS
editing was horrible
theatrical version has like 15 mins of plot necessary scenes cut and doesn't make sense otherwise
dialogue was baaaad
character motivations (????)
It takes forever for any action to actually happen
pacing is slow as molasses
Doomsday's CGI looked bad and a copy of a Lord of the Rings troll
Suicide Squad
bad writing
little character development/depth/motivation
the editing was rofl bad (where's the joker and all the stuff from the trailer?)
CGI on the badguys was bad.
loads of shots oriented just to get margot's butt. |
TheTripP
10.25.16 | The Ultimate Edition of BVS answered a lot of questions the theatrical left open (I blame WB), I feel the movie just takes time to understand it's not given to you like most superhero movies tend to do. Pacing is slow at times but I think for DC's first major beginning to it's future it did well. Doomsday better come back or I will be very upset...
Suicide Squad was fun entertainment on a small scale... it didn't intend to be a epic showdown and there did seem to be misplaced scenes and story... but I forgive it because of the entertainment value. |
zaruyache

08.11.21 | It is but it isn't really RT's fault, all it is is an aggregation of reviews creating a consensus.
The problem isn't that Ghostbusters reboot has a 72% on RT, the problem is that 72% of recognized critics actually thought the Ghostbusters reboot film was good. |
