09.30.16 | The Witch isn't very scary but it's tense. It's probably one of the best occult styled movies I've seen. The only thing I'd recommend is watching it with subtitles. It's staged in like the Puritan/Colonial times and one of the best and worse parts of the movie is the accents. They're so good, it's sort of hard to understand at times.
If you're not expecting a gorefest or scares, it's fantastic. |

09.30.16 | There was a thriller called Hush on Netflix I thoroughly enjoyed if anyone has seen that. |

House of the Devil has been rec'd here a bunch and I think anyone who likes horror should give this one a go. The atmosphere is top notch.
Definitely some good sci-fi being thrown around this list. Props to The Thing, and obviously Alien/Aliens if you've never seen those.
An American Werewolf in London is very entertaining, would highly recommend.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a "horror" movie I watched earlier this week that I would definitely recommend. It has a heavy David Lynch vibe, all black and white, and appears to be a Persian film, but it was all filmed in CA. It's a vampire movie with zero scares, but has a fantastic atmosphere. It's pretty arthouse, so if that's not your thing, then skip it. |

10.09.16 | finding a good horror movie (capable of terrorizing you which is what a good one should do) is a needle in a haystack. I'm not a fan of camp, farcical, black humor, overly gratuitous violence etc in my horror films as I think they diminish the horror aspects (although the evil dead remake was quite good), but if you do then I definitely recommend American Horror Story if you havent watched it already. All seasons have these elements although the quality fluctuates wildly across seasons. I loved season 1 and 2 but couldn't even finish season 5. |

10.17.16 | The Witch was good in the sense that after the movie I wasn't unsettled or even scared so much as it wasn't what I expected.
Call me a puss, I really liked Insidious. I felt like it was one of those horror movies that never really let up or lost steam, even at the end.
Babadook was ruined by the ending though.
Death of a Ghost Hunter is pretty dang good.... again until the ending. |
Thalassic
10.17.16 | First half of Sinister was pretty fucking spooky and pretty fucking good. Second half...meh.
The first half though really genuinely unnerved me. |
DungeonBoy
10.17.16 | First and second half of Insidious are like that as well. |
Thalassic
10.17.16 | Yeah second half of Insidious they went over the top with that "netherworld" stuff. Kinda pulled me out of the experience. One thing I gotta credit Wan with though, and that is that the dude knows how to build up a scene. In Conjuring 2 the big bad monster looked exactly like Marilyn Manson, which in itself is as intimidating as a cucumber. Thanks to the way Wan directs some of the scenes earlier on in the movie, he manages to create a few reasonably creepy scenes despite the ridiculous creature design. |
BallsDeep
10.17.16 | sinister's premise was genuinely scary but its execution in the second half... it just completely shit the bed. Mr black metal got way too much screen time which really detracted from the eerie atmosphere. "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it."
' |
Thalassic
10.17.16 | ^^^ exactly
Premise was scary as fuck and the first half was top notch. Soundtrack really fucked with my head at times (that Boards of Canada song worked wonders) and when only glimpses were shown of the boogeyman, it was still quite eerie. Then in the second half they started having those ridiculous scenes with those little brats running around and it really killed the experience for me. |

10.17.16 | Lots of good recs here (Don't Breathe, The Witch, Lights Out, It Follows, etc). Skip Babadook though for the love of everything.

10.17.16 | @Thalassic
Yeah definitely. the video reels in Sinister were pretty unnerving, thanks largely to Ulver's Silence Teaches you How to Sing EP. I really wanted him to awaken and find playing a tape of himself and his family going about their business in the house but never happened unfortunately. I think the most effective part was when you're not sure if you're dealing with a supernatural entity or a deranged serial killer. Then they made it clear which one it was and went way fucking overboard |

10.17.16 | fuck SPOILERS ^^ READ AT YOUR OWN RISK etc etc |

10.17.16 | Thanks boys, Sinister is on the list. |
Impervious
10.17.16 | Yeah definitely check out Sinister but Sinister 2 wasn't that great ftr. Stick to the original. Just because you add more children in a movie...doesn't mean it will be creepy/scary. Sinister's premise was actually really fucking cool, but the ending took a little bit away from me but I still enjoyed it.
I myself have been watching horror themed movies all month so far and I've finally sat through ALL of the Friday The 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween series movies. Unfortunately, time hasn't been kind to the grand majority of them. |
Impervious
10.17.16 | Also, the first time I watched The Babadook about a year ago, I was thoroughly disappointed because the beginning started off so strong with that book but the "Babadook" at the end looked super cheesy. Also, that child was so fucking annoying.
Having watched it again last week, I was able to enjoy it so much more knowing it wasn't gonna be the super scary looking monster I had expected to see from the book and that it was more a psychological horror vs a scary horror and it was so much better the second time. If you didn't like, give it some time and go back. |
SCREAM!
10.18.16 | The second time you watched it you knew it was going to be shit so you weren't disappointed and it seemed better. Don't be fooled |
