Writer's Anxiety/Growing As A Reviewer

When I first joined Sputnik, I had no intention of being a reviewer. I was perfectly content trolling my favorite band pages and acting as an all-around scourge to the site. At some point, I decided to give writing a whirl and discovered I had a true passion for it. Since then, my obsession with writing and improving has been a constant. I've taken some lengthy breaks, but the need to write has always bubbled below the surface. Lately, I've been finding it harder to improve and find my voice. I know plateaus are a natural part of the process, but this one seems a bit harder to overcome than any I've come across before. Everything I get down feels the same, and I notice a lot of repeating of ideas, words, and phrases. It's become too mechanical. I genuinely love to write - whether it be for Sputnik or on my own time, it's a passion that I want to pursue until I'm the best I can be - but lately, it's made me anxious and insecure more than anything. Anyone ever go through something similar, and if so, how'd you overcome it? List is digs and albums I'm contemplating reviewing.
1The Venus De Melos
Fatty

superb math rock/pop
2Mizmor
Yodh

one of the most interesting doom and drone based releases i've heard in a while. also, i can't get enough of that album art
3Dance Gavin Dance
Instant Gratification

i find that i have a harder time writing about albums that i love or am familiar with. i have a lot to say until i get to reviewing it, than i feel intimidated or like i wont' be able to do it justice
4Shataan
Weigh Of The Wolf

i read a lot of "self-help" writing books. i know a big problem for me is that i'm focused on the outcome of the review; how it will be received rather than just enjoying the processing of writing it.
5Surgeon (PHL)
Beast of Light

though i love it (duh) consistently writing about metal hasn't done me any favors. ive tried to branch out recently, but it's obviously where i am most comfortable. this is where i see myself being repeated the most
6Pentatonix
Pentatonix

i seize up at the thought of reviewing other music because i'm unfamiliar with its history. knowing of the context of how a release fits in a genre is important to me, so if i don't know the genre well, it makes it more daunting. also, descriptions.
7Liquicity
Escapism 3

i feel on some level that i'm defined as a whole person by how well i write, like it's become my identity. it makes the whole exercise much more stressful
8Arizmenda
Beneath This Reality of Flesh

i love to look at other reviewer's work (most notably our current staff who are insanely talented) for inspiration, but then i often find myself tying to emulate their style instead of developing my own. when i can't recreate what i think their style is, i love to berate myself for it.
