08.09.16 | Fenriz is fuckin great. Dude's so through with everything but he's hilarious in his deadpan delivery of the craziest shit.
And then Varg's just sitting there in maximum security prison, waxing poetic like some Harvard philosophy professor. It's scary because he's clearly the smartest person involved in the movie but he's also a murderous sociopath. |

08.09.16 | Yeah Varg is an intersting character for sure. But yeah Fenriz is the bomb, dude has a great sense of humour. |

08.19.16 | Fenriz is the interesting part of this doc for sure. For the most part though, there's not a lot of new information. The stuff with the art gallery and frost is cringeworthy. If you're a huge fan of the second wave, then it's worth one watch, but maybe 20% of it is good.
The best piece of media about this time period is the Metalion/Slayer Mag book that came out a few years ago. |

08.19.16 | this film is all about the atmosphere, i see it more as an art film than a documentary, and i'm pretty sure that was the intention of the director. it's all fenriz walking solemnly through a snowed-in forest or downtown area and ulver or mum's ambient tunes playing, then suddenly counterpointed with early mayhem recordings and pictures of spikes and corpsepaint
definitely the ambient sections are what give the film its magic |
ScuroFantasma
08.20.16 | ^agreed with this |
Sevengill
08.20.16 | ^ [3]
I watched it with a friend and remember saying that the film actually feels like black metal -- intentionally underproduced so that the aura is as important as the content. The peaks and lulls and how they're sequenced, the interplay between characters and environment. Which, obviously, movie critics aren't likely to consider unless they're looking for an arthouse film rather than a straight-up documentary. |
ScuroFantasma
08.20.16 | That's a realy cool comparison. To me the combination of the soundtrack, the extended train scene/walking scenes/museum scene and especially that 'artistic' suicide thingies inclusion - you can tell its not just an ordinary documentary. They don't just sit everyone down and talk to them or have a narrator (or even an interviewers presence), they get Gylve out and about so they can observe, cut in handheld footage of churches burning and home videos etc. It's all really well done. I especially like the way they punctuate Varg's points with cuts to his trial and the arson. You're reminded that this well-spoken, calm guy is a violent criminal, and that deadpan, throwaway delivery of 'so I finished him [Euro] off' is so...damn. Especially when you read up about how exactly it was that he 'finished him off'. Director and editors should be praised for how well put together this is. |

he's the embodiment of black metal, he's so black metal he doesn't even play black metal anymore

08.20.16 | [crossing the street]: Cutting straight without looking, asking for a spanking.
I just can't. This is the most "indie" black metal related thing I've ever seen and it's great. |
ZippaThaRippa
08.20.16 | That's exactly it Budgie. He's the essence of "I'm going to do what I want." If he went on tour, he would be swimming in money. If he made a black metal throwback album, he would be swimming in money. But he doesn't want to tour. And he doesn't want to make that music anymore. So he and Ted make heavy metal albums and not everyone cares for them and he just doesn't give a fuck. Cuz he doesn't make music for us. He's an inspiration. |
budgie
08.20.16 | it's been a long time since i've seen that interview he has with the german guy with the chipmunk laugh, but i always remember when he was talking about not touring; darkthrone is his life's work, why would he cheap out and invalidate it all? that sort of artistic integrity is legendary and that's exactly why fenriz is a living legend |

ScuroFantasma
08.20.16 | Anyone who enjoyed that song in the interview I encourage you to check out the whole album, Adrenalin O.D. rule hard, they've got this punk style but a lot of the riffs sound like a precursor to what the second wave bm dudes were doing. |

Alastor
08.20.16 | "And, after all that, "How do you like YOUR prison?" is the best ending line ever."
This would be a very Varg thing to say, but he actually says "How do you like THE prison". Either that, or I watched a different film.
For other BM documentaries make sure to watch 'Satan Rides The Media'. Quite similar, but more informative and less artistic.
Other worthy films are 'A Dying God' (about Celtic Frost) and 'One Man Metal' (Xasthur, Leviathan and Striborg). 'Roadkill Extravaganza' (Satyricon) is somewhat entertaining too, but has no merit beyond that. There are a lot more, but most of them are either boring (Once upon a time in Norway) or sensationalistic (TNBM).
|
ScuroFantasma
08.20.16 | I'll check the Satan and Dying God ones, haven't seen those yet. I like Once Upon a Time In Norway, although it's definitey not as good as some of the others, but it's got more details for those who know everything else already. One Man Metal is pretty cool, some of the dudes involved are pretty weird characters, but it's a really cool doc agreed. |
Sevengill
08.20.16 | fuck does he really say THE prison? that's

actually it's no less unsettling |

Awesome link man, thanks for posting it. Just read it all, but the best part was definitely the final section after the book 'review' where Varg corrects the history. |
Egarran
08.21.16 | Yeah, thanks a lot Alastor. Now my problem is, how much is Varg being revisionist?
Oh and "Again I can point at their odd choice of sources; why do they give a Jew the opportunity to air his thoughts on this subject [Extra Terrestrial origin of life] to begin with?"
Stuff like that. |
Wolfhorde
08.21.16 | Documentary has a lot of boring and cringey parts as other people have noted.
Fenriz is cool yea. Also, Varg is probably not the most intelligent of the bunch, lol. If he was that intelligent he probably wouldn't run into bullshit charges like he has in the past. |
Sevengill
08.21.16 | all I know is Varg's smarter than me so |

08.22.16 | "Now my problem is, how much is Varg being revisionist?"
That's true. But even if only half of his criticism of Lords Of Chaos is valid, it still makes the authors look like idiots. For example their assumption that the inner circle was influenced by LaVey; one just needs to look at the Aske-EP, to know Varg and Euronymous despised the man. They clearly didn't do their research properly.
