Now, Kerplunk isn't nearly as popular as Dookie and to most, nowhere near as good. But think about it like this: Welcome To Paradise, one of the most popular tracks from Dookie, originated on here. To me, this is the superior version with most notably a different bridge than on the Dookie version. Kerplunk, in many ways, is the essential Green Day album. It is the half way point between the love /growing up songs throughout the entirety of 39/Smooth, and the angry/angsty weed smoking songs from Dookie. Kerplunk also features better hooks than those on Dookie. Take "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield" with the speedy, catchy chorus that'll make you replay the song because you want it to stay in your head for the rest of the day, or the two love songs dedicated to Billie's wife (2000 Light Years Away and 80(short for Adrienne)). Both display Billie longing for his wife throughout the songs in not just the chorus, but the verses too.

Ok, I basically started making it a review so I'll return to it being classic. This album also displays power through Tre's drumming throughout most of the songs ( and his first humorous song "Dominated Love Slave). Kerplunk also evolved production wise. The very unproduced and unmastered elements of 39/Smooth are not displayed on here, and is almost on Dookie's level

In conclusion, if this album weren't such an underground hit, bringing in money that was not granted to Green Day by Lookout Records, Dookie and the rest of Green Day's albums might not have happened.
