The day I'm banging back bottles of whiskey alone at home is the day I will have to take a long hard look at myself.

iloveyouall 07.26.16	i feel like my drinking has become a problem because people always tell me that i'm so happy when i'm drunk. i fool myself into believing that it's not that bad. problem is, as my tolerance gets higher, it takes more for me to hit that happy high, to the point where it pretty much takes me a bottle of spirits (or more) to get there now.

Between 16-19 it was probably 3 or 4 days a week of getting plastered. 20-27 and it was less frequent but the periods of consumption were ridiculous, there were the week long sessions, few days off and then bang back on it. It's all levelled off now, probabaly get absolutley shitfaced once a month, can go weeks without even having a pint. It's manageable.

I lost lot of my old friends fixing my shit up and going through all of that until I landed high enough to be happy. being social is a pain most of the time but it's all about navigation and mastery. most of those friends ended up coming back anyway.

I literally carried and hurled him into the lake. I apparently did the right thing.

Idolatrous 07.26.16	Well I feel I ought to throw my hat in the ring hear since alcoholism has been a major part of my life and my story could help someone. So first off both my parents are alcoholics (and my Dad also does any drug he can find). They have been like this my whole life and did not even change when I was first born unexpectedly into their hazy world. Due to their constant drinking at work, while driving me home from school, and for every meal at home I became estranged from them socially very quickly. I began pleading in my late elementary schools years to stop once as one of my uncles died from drinking himself to death to avoid his depression (as well as reminding my mom who had lost her mother and cousins to drinking in the past. Then also my Dads families drinking issues and friends he lost). But this did not haze them. I lost contact with them as the effects really showed during my high school years (despite living in the same house, I just learned to do things on my own and not go upstairs). They were always in public getting drunk and had no support to help stop the constant use of alcohol. It also did not help that all of their friends, siblings, and parents were just the same and they could not take responsibility for their issue.
Idolatrous 07.26.16	Last year around this time my Dad would go through two full bottles of vodka a day (and they were huge bottles). I discovered them intertwined with all of my mothers wine bottles and assorted other hard alcohol that they were stealing from where they worked. They would wake up every morning drinking hard liquor out of their coffee mugs. Then one day my father succumbed to this and feel down off his cart at work. Everyone thought it was heat stroke. We took him home to rest, then he got up and went to urinate off our balcony. He feel two stories down into the dirt, knocking himself out. My mom went outside in a stupor and began laughing at him, then maliciously beating him calling him a drunk while she herself was utterly intoxicated. It is one of the saddest things I have ever seen take place in my life. No one would help him so I alone had to take my father who I had no spoken to in over six years to the hospital out of pure sympathy. Nothing was broken and he was fine. They tried to talk to him about rehab due to his blood alcohol content being enough to kill two people the doctor speculated but due to how much he drank he could survive as this constant level (I cannot recall the exact calculation or if that is true as the doctor had quite an accent). I thought maybe he would see the error of his ways and so would my mother but they still drink like fish to this very day.
Idolatrous 07.26.16	Alcohol is a crazy substance. I know that due to memories like these and the loss of more family and friends due to this disease motivate me never take the risk of drinking such a liquid (or do drugs but that is not what this thread is about). I am happy to be leaving here to go to college, but afraid for them and my siblings as they are all to numb to the effects of alcohol already to stop. But I am not saying everyone has to go cold turkey, I just feel that alcohol should never be absorbing your life and effect people around you in such a way. Therefore as people have mentioned to cope you must find hobbies, be productive and motivate yourself to live a healthy life. Make sure to find likeminded individuals too so that you will feel inspired and good about yourself for being sober. I know that for me there is no better way to live life and clarity only comes after one can stumble out of their drunken haze.

Knave 07.26.16	My daily intake of drugs basically consists of 3 cups of coffee in the morning, I dab and smoke a joint after work, drink about 3-5 glasses of whiskey, dab and smoke a cigarette before bed. I used to be really bad with the weed and alcohol but I've gotten it down pretty well. Stayed in school too which is pretty surprising and a huge plus.

Got through the "gonna get fucked up" phase in HS and college and since I have had problems with drugs in the past I think I found myself at a place where I can balance the enjoyment with the responsibility. Throwing up means you had potential to OD (technically meaning you did OD) and your body is trying to prevent anymore damage. Personally it's what got me done with alcohol in huge amounts like that cause throwing up is fucking disgusting. I've dry heaved in front of a toilet from opiates enough to never want to go back to that too.

Crymsonblaze 07.30.16	for me, being drunk feels really bad. the only other 'drug' i've ever tried really is ambien, but compared to that, being drunk feels like total garbage (not that i'm advocating pill addiction by any means). though at least with ambien, there's a very pronounced sense of euphoria, not to mention the fun hallucinatory effects, whereas when i'm drunk i just feel kind of dizzy with the occasional stomachache (again, n=1 results here). even if being drunk felt good to me, i could never get past the absolutely vile taste of alcohol. might as well drink gasoline and light a match.

Crymsonblaze 07.30.16	i think i mentioned it in an ssri thread a while back, but i tried cymbalta (in a string of half a dozen ssri/snri/even an atyptical antipsychotic over the course of a year and a half) and didn't find that it (or any of them) did much, if anything, for me.
Spec 07.30.16	its my newest on a long list of ssri's i've been on but im only three days in so it still doesn't really feel like anything
Crymsonblaze 07.30.16	i was also on adderall and ambien while taking cymbalta (probably my worst 4-5 month period) so there could be dozens of reasons why i didn't find it effective with the crazy drug cocktail i was constantly on. my mom, however, has been on cymbalta for over a decade for bipolar disorder and seems happy with it as far as i know, so that's something. i do remember that missing even a single dose gave me crazy brain zaps, though.
Spec 07.30.16	i got the zaps hard if i missed a dose of cipralex so im well prepared for that i've heard horrible things about ambien if you take it for longer than a month so im kind of glad i never had to experience that

ReminiscentOfAWhale 08.19.16	In my own personal experience in college I've definitely felt social pressures to drink but seem to be surrounded by good people that would never shame someone for not drinking but totally respect it. I know people that don't drink or drink sparingly in addition to dd's/hosts at parties or whatever and it never seems that they are forced into drinking or anything. But I have definitely experienced that foma or awkwardness when you are not drinking for whatever reason. Idk it seems possible to resist the social pressure but of course the addictive part is something else entirely

Also don't pigeonhole yourself based on your family. I've feared having certain traits that I've seen in my family and I think it's more psychological than biological when you act the same. I think you can separate yourself if you believe it's possible - no offense to your family, just based on what you said
