05.02.25 | Album is absolutely one of the best of its era and kind. I'll go really long stretches not listening to this band and I start to think of them as a bit cheesy, a guilty pleasure at best... but then I blow the dust off this album and I am blown away by how good it is yet again. I'd swap "Sullivan Street" with "Raining and Baltimore" and "Ghost Train" with "Time and Time Again", but other than that I'm really on board with this ranking.
Counting Crows never really came close to this again, but it's basically perfection. It has to be one of the best debut records I've ever heard. It has a maturity and grace that sounds like something that would come 3-4 albums into a career, certainly not a debut. Their other records shouldn't be overlooked at all, especially the next two, but all of them have gems (Even Hard Candy) and the most recent, Somewhere Under Wonderland, is really great as a whole. Very underrated band. August is so genuine, authentic, and vulnerable and I don't think that was quite able to be captured again after the band broke through. |
