07.24.16 | Check out maudlin of the Well, they're a very well respected band in progressive metal. Maybe check out some Kayo Dot (maudlin of the Well affiliated), Atheist, Cynic, Edge Of Sanity, Amorphis, Gojira and Akercocke too |
heck

07.24.16 | Spires - The Whisperer
Man Made Origin - False Consciousness
Farmakon - Robin
Descend - Wither
Derelict Earth - Below The Empty Skies
In Mourning - Shrouded Divine
Alley - Amphibious
Most of the albums are mediocre. But they sound somehow like Opeth so there you go.

07.24.16 | maudlin of the Well [2]
Not that it's exactly like Opeth, but it's a very valuable band. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.24.16 | yeah maudlin is nothing like opeth in any way whatsoever |
BigPleb
07.24.16 | maudlin do rule tho |

07.24.16 | Alright I'll check out all these at some point. Maudlin was a band I was meaning to for awhile, just forgot. |
DazSkunk
07.24.16 | not that they are necessarily like Opeth but an Opeth fan might still like these bands |
smaugman
07.24.16 | yea there are very few bands that same similar to opeth |
hesperus
07.24.16 | i always thought septicflesh sounded a little like opeth |
rasi
07.24.16 | Wilderun are in parts VERY close to opeth. Example: https://wilderun.bandcamp.com/track/the-garden-of-fire
Also: https://perihelionship.bandcamp.com/album/a-rare-thunderstorm-in-spring
And: a bit more prog rock, but still has some death in it: https://submasq.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-bazaar
And of course Edge of Sanity and In Mourning. But they are not as close to opeth as the others. |
Deathconscious
07.24.16 | Novembers Doom are very Opeth-esque. |
Deathconscious
07.24.16 | also Insomnium are like Opeth if they went a melodeath route instead of progressive. |

07.24.16 | The comments about there being no bands like opeth are hilarious, try literally every crappy mainstream over dramatic Melodeth band from Scandinavia ever |
hal1ax
07.24.16 | lol, how do ppl think maudlin is similar |
rasi
07.24.16 | @LordePots: Oh, so Opeth is a Melodeath band now. Must have missed that part.
@hal1ax: Indeed, hilarious. Opeth being an Avantgarde band is wrong from the other side of the spectrum. |

07.24.16 | I've heard Ne Obliviscaris's Citadel. I remember liking it but I don't remember it sounding much like Opeth, then again I haven't heard it in like two years so I may be wrong. |
Rik VII
07.24.16 | Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Even with Akerfeldt on guest vocals. This album developed after Swanö produced Orchid, which inspired him in some ways, as far as I remember. So the resemblances are there.
also, calling Opeth melo death gives me a headache. |
rasi
07.24.16 | @LordePots: That's fun, because people slag Heritage off for being a 70s rip-off, yet it sounds just like Opeth, without the growls. Thanks for letting me know that Melodeath is such a 70s inspired genre.
Guess I should recommend some Dark Tranquility to fans of Emmerson Lake and Palmer from now on. |
FullOfSounds
07.24.16 | "Just tried the new Novembre album from this year, got some Opeth vibes from that, especially towards the end of it."

07.24.16 | @rasi how retarded are you for real tho? Full on retarded or just 90%? Serious question |
rasi
07.24.16 | I prefer to be retarded and know the difference between Progressive Death and Melodeath |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.24.16 | OK so full on retarded gotcha thanks for clearing that up :,D |
FullOfSounds
07.24.16 | I think that Opeth have some melodeath aspects to them, but they're definitely not a concrete melodeath band. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.24.16 | You can be a melodeth band and be progressive believe it or not. But yeah most of heir back catalogue is just mildly progressive melodeth. Heritage is not. |

07.24.16 | theyre proggy death/melodeath. rasi get over it bud |
FullOfSounds
07.24.16 | Meh, people see music in different ways, so seeing Opeth as a certain genre is just how you look at it. I think we can all agree that Opeth have a lot of genres mixed in there. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
07.24.16 | This is true but again for instance saying the knife is electronic is true but doesn't mean they don't have a lot of other obvious influences. It's just the best indicator of their core values
