Agalloch Is Dead

Well, the jury's still out. But where one great tree falls, many more will grow toward the new light. Throw down your favorites that will fill the hole in black metal's canopy.
1Harrow (CAN)
Fallow Fields

On the softer side of black/folk, Harrow creates gorgeous, flowing songs that sound like they were all recorded in one near-perfect take. This is one of those diamonds in the rough that I'm delighted to have found and Fallow Fields is my go-to hiking/mountain biking album.
2Ifing
Against This Weald

Ifing is another newcomer whose multi-part epics combine fuzzy background guitars with sparking acoustic passages. The production is clear and airy, giving Against This Weald a refreshing atmosphere throughout its succinct 35 minutes.
3Barrowlands
Thane

Barrowlands sounds distinctly less polished than either band above, but their brand of black metal is the most unpredictable of the bunch. Each song is full of ever-shifting rhythms, dissonant, crawling guitars, and snarled vocals. Thane is a messily fantastic album that legitimately sounds like it was written and recorded in a grove of dead hemlock trees.
4Windfaerer
Tenebrosum

Moving to the heavier side of things, Windfaerer sounds like Ne Ob if they'd binged Windir before writing an album. Tenebrosum's thunderous drums propel songs that often segue from stop-start tremolo riffing to danceable folk passages led by wailing violin.
