Never got further than that; part of it is that they are long albums and I'm still digesting them, part of it is that there just isn't any spark to keep going with their discography. I guess I at least need to check out Blackwater Park still, considering all the praise it receives

ScuroFantasma 05.22.16	Since you haven't been given a proper answer this far... I'd say start with Deliverence if you're having a hard time keeping up, it's probably their most straightforward and also the heaviest. If you want something softer, Pale Communion is straight up prog rock, and Damnation is prog rock/folk. If you want something that basically sums them all up into one, Ghost Reveries, Still Life and BWP are all highly recommended. Morningrise is a little bit more 'floaty', it sort of wanders which is cool but probably the opposite of what you're after right now.
Dimorphic 05.22.16	Blackwater Park and Still Life are both classics of the genre for a reason. Anyone saying these albums suck are pretty much just shitting out a 2kool5mainstream meme. Other than that, their heaviest album is probably Deliverance and their cleanest (and most similar to Katatonia) is probably Damnation. But bear in mind that I haven't properly listened to anything post Damnation (2003) because... their discography is kinda big and their newer albums are pretty shit from what I've heard.

wwf 05.22.16	I always tell people to start with BWP and go forwards if you like the soft stuff and go backwards if you like the heavy stuff. Or just listen to BWP over and over because lbr none of their other albums are even close to that quality

From reading the comments posted so far (the rare ones that actually contribute to the discussion) it seems like people see it as a good overall view of what Opeth stands (or stood) for.
