04.27.16 | Essentials:
My Bloody Valentine - 'Loveless'
Slowdive - 'Souvlaki'
Ride - 'Nowhere'
Those are probably the three big ones you hear about all the time when it comes to early 90's shoegaze. If you've never heard them, these albums are probably the place to start shoegaze. While it didn't start the genre, 'Loveless' is probably the most well-known shoegaze album of all time.
The Standards:
Catherine Wheel - 'Ferment' / 'Chrome'
Chapterhouse - 'Whirlpool'
Lush - 'Split'
The Jesus and Mary Chain - 'Psychocandy'
Whirr - 'Distressor'
Swervedriver - 'Mezcal Head'
Cocteau Twins - 'Heaven Or Las Vegas'
These are just some of the standard albums that tend to come after the top three. Chapterhouse and Catherine Wheel are some good British rock that are classics. Jesus and Mary Chain is that noisy section of shoegaze in the vein of Sonic Youth. Swervedriver is that dirty, grungy shoegaze. Cocteau Twins are really Dream Pop, but the two genres tend to go hand-in-hand, and that is probably the most well-known dream pop album, so you might as well check it out.
A Personal Recommendation:
Starflyer 59 - anything from 'Silver' through 'Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice'
Starflyer 59 have been my favorite shoegaze band since before I even know what shoegaze was. I have all but three of their albums, and they have A LOT of albums. They transition from dirty, grungy shoegaze early on with 'Silver', all the way to dream pop as they get later in their careers, so they kind of span the entire spectrum of Shoegaze outside of Noise Rock. I'd love it if, at some point in your exploration, you checked them out. |
