03.05.16 | mort.
i thought electric ship thing was blade runner? |
smaugman
03.05.16 | some of my fav science fiction movies so far have been alien(s), blade runner and the thing |
smaugman
03.05.16 | what do you mean |
Deathconscious
03.05.16 | Ubik by Philip K. Dick. also Valis. Valis is loosely sci fi, but its more just mindfuckery than anything else. one of the most interesting books ive ever read. |
smaugman
03.05.16 | also if i forgot to mention, im only looking for movies. i dont read |
Deathconscious
03.05.16 | you might have wanted to mention that awhile ago. |
smaugman
03.05.16 | oh well, i thought movies were first priority for most people |
someguest
03.05.16 | "also if i forgot to mention, im only looking for movies. i dont read"
haha well played |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | but books are better than movies in almost every way |
smaugman
03.05.16 | i dont really like reading |
someguest
03.05.16 | Don't worry smaugman, there will always be some 'intellectual' telling you books are superior at every turn. |
Mort.
03.05.16 | "mort.
i thought electric ship thing was blade runner?"
it is but as ovdeath said they are very different works
and if you are looking for films then i suggest gattaca |
adr
03.05.16 | 2001 A Space Odyssey, Brazil, Moon, 12 Monkeys, Children of Men, The Fly, Ghost in the Shell, Angel's Egg, Ex Machina |
someguest
03.05.16 | Man, every time you mention how much you love a film some cunt comes in and proclaims the book is better. Nobody gives a shit. |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | i'm not being an "intellectual" there is nothing wrong with disliking reading and prefering films. personally i prefer reading, therefore i think books are better. |
someguest
03.05.16 | Then "I like the book more" is the correct response, not "the book is better". @ Band |
smaugman
03.05.16 | basically i've read a few books related to school and the hobbit + all three lotr books |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | a lot of book to film adaptations haven't been great, but i'd argue that isnt because of how the story is translated to a different medium a lot of the time but just down to bad film making. its hard to state that the book is better when the two things are so different. |
Cimnele
03.05.16 | the book is better |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | i would correct you here and say that lotr is actually one book, but that would make me an "intellectual". i hope you enjoyed the books you read. |
someguest
03.05.16 | Yeah. The reason films differ so much from their sources is because they have a multitude of people working on them. When you have many different inputs instead of one you're bound to make some adjustments whether it's conscious or not. |
adr
03.05.16 | 2001 the movie > book
The Shining the movie > book
hard |
smaugman
03.05.16 | what's wrong with tolkien? |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | i thought no country for old men was kinda meh tbh, had some great acting though. |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | you can hardly compare the shining movie and book again because of how vastly different they are in story and mood. a lot of stephen kind adaptations are like that |
adr
03.05.16 | Stephen King is overrated as shit |
smaugman
03.05.16 | i think movies are more intense |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | yeah i love the book and i read it before i saw the movie but idk the film left me feeling slightly underwhelmed. |
someguest
03.05.16 | LoTR is unbearable. Here's 500 characters and 10 different languages. It's more like a college course than a book. The worst reading experience ever. |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | man i loved my experience with reading lotr its easily one of my favourites, a lot of tolkiens stuff post lotr is fantastic too imo |
Mort.
03.05.16 | so much discussion here yet the book thread on the community forums is nearly always dead :( |
smaugman
03.05.16 | you guys are nuts... lotr is really well written and an amazing experience |
BandNewbac
03.05.16 | ^ YES |
Yotimi
03.05.16 | The shining movie is better than the book in every way |
Deathconscious
03.05.16 | King has his mediocre books like any other author with that many books under his belt, and since he writes for a living im sure there are plenty that are just cash ins. But salems lot, the dark tower series, and the talisman are among my favorite books. |
smaugman
03.05.16 | bandnewbac, ever read game of thrones? |
adr
03.05.16 | the book is like some fantasy like Alice in Wonderland compared to the movie lol, i haven't even finished it.
It's not scary or dark at all |
smaugman
03.05.16 | but game of throne is way worse than lotr, it got like one billion names the first hundred pages |
Deathconscious
03.05.16 | LOTR is one of the worst books ive ever read. Theres no doubting its importance and Tolkien's ability to build a world is rivaled by few, but as far as writing an interesting story goes... |
Piglet
03.05.16 | LOTR is great for the beginning reader, i never had any trouble as a kid, always thought it was beautiful and a wonderful addition to my childhood. will always cherish the books and feel sorry for anyone that doesn't |
Piglet
03.05.16 | but jack nicholson's performance was great
still can't get over that scene where it's just him frozen in the maze with that ridiculous expression - i mean what was kubrick going for there but for comedic effect hahahah
in fact the whole film is just a comedy |
smaugman
03.05.16 | never like the whole arwen thing in lotr movie, she's basically non existent in the film |
adr
03.05.16 | i don't know why anyone would want to read the lotr books if he's seen the movies honestly, too.fucking.long with a lot boring and dull moments to justify the length i bet the books have even more of that |
Mort.
03.05.16 | this is depressing me as ive been looking forward to reading LOTR for some time now |
adr
03.05.16 | Also the ending of 2001 is one of the best endings of any movie ever, Kubrick not being ambitious is a joke of a comment. The ending of The Shining fits perfectly for the movie. |
smaugman
03.05.16 | mort dont be scared by these stupid lotr hating comments |
someguest
03.05.16 | "The ending of 2001 ruined the film. It was a good film with a brilliant premise up until the 30 minutes of psychedelic colours and then -the end- part.
Dear god what a pile of fucking trash that ending was."
It was the SPOILER birth of a universe, man. |
someguest
03.05.16 | The big crime is how Akira ripped off 2001: A Space Odyssey. I don't mind tho, love both films. |
adr
03.05.16 | ugh |
Mort.
03.05.16 | the final part of 2001 a space odyssey is awful, the scenes within the room with the older versions of himself are fine but the final shot of the floating foetus or whatever is pretty fucking bad |
Piglet
03.05.16 | yeah mort these guys are just a bunch of greasy beard hairs
lotr is a genuinely engaging read, with immense depth and wonderful lore. Tolkien's love for the natural world and linguistics bleeds through regularly in his descriptions, his prose isn't dry and sparse like most in the genre, his inspiration clearly taking from the example of Ariosto. It takes a sorry sausage to deny the qualities which has made it so timeless |
Mort.
03.05.16 | the colours scene lasts around 10 mins i think but honestly i didnt mind it too much because at that point i got up and rolled a joint because fuck it i knew it would probably be unbearably boring otherwise
yeah i havent seen it sober tho so it is probably worse than i experienced it |
adr
03.05.16 | the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite sequence is beautiful u guys suck |
someguest
03.05.16 | People really don't like that ending?
Damn. |
adr
03.05.16 | someguest watch Angel's Egg it's closer to 2001 than Akira tbh and it's really good. |
smaugman
03.05.16 | i have considered watching it, but it gives me the impression of being a super slow movie |
Mort.
03.05.16 | literally love everything about that film up to the last shot of the floating foetus its a shame. still a great film |
Mort.
03.05.16 | and yeah Smaugman its a slow as fuck movie |
Cimnele
03.05.16 | i love the 2001 movie, thank god someone decided to release a high-budget film which wasn't just 100% exposition for a change |
zakalwe
03.05.16 | Full Metal Jacket |

Yotimi
03.06.16 | If u think a movie based on a book needs to follow the story closely then you don't understand movies. Whats the point of even making the movie if its the same shit? If anything the more different it is from the book the better. A director should have his own vision, not trying to recreate someone else's. (Regarding the shining) |
Deathconscious
03.06.16 | Agreed, not only that but theyre different mediums, something that works for a book isnt always going to work for a movie. But people are usually biased towards the book if they liked it and read it before they saw the movie. |
Deathconscious
03.06.16 | Nah, a lot of great movies have come from books. |
