| If You Weighed it Differently
Hello again, back with some more numbers. My previous list appeared to be widely hated, except for a handful of staff. Criticisms included: its general dumbness and somehow, concurrently the degree of difficulty in understanding the information. This time I didn’t fix the dumbness, but I did make it less complicated. So, I was reading the other day that imdb gives special weight to more trusted users and trims outliers in determining what imdb rating is displayed for movies. This list is an exercise in weighting and transforming the displayed rating of albums in the sputnik database. It is my belief that relative to other sites, sputnik is not influenced by conflicts of interest or industry pressure. Instead, as is the case with other sites, it can be influenced by the “heard” and probably specifically by a few strongly influential taste-makers. People will choose to listen to an album based on a rating or a strong review (this is what I do when it comes to bands I haven’t listened to before) and they may use a review or the rating as a baseline for determining their own rating (again, guilty). As a case study, I present each of the following albums with a 5% trimmed mean (the 5% largest ratings and smallest ratings are removed and what is left is averaged, this reduces the influence of outliers on the mean), a weighted mean (a mean where each value is assigned a specific weight, i.e. the average of 5 and 4 is 4.5, but if the 5 has a weight of 2 and the 4 a weight of 1, then the average is 4.666) with the weights determined by the number of ratings that the users who made the rating had, a weighted mean with weights determine by number of reviews the user has written, and weighted mean with weights determined by number of lists the user has produced. (I chose these because they were the easiest to scrape off of the html code.) For albums, I extacted data from thrash’s Big 4’s best rated albums, Death’s four best albums, and Kendrick’s surprise ep. | | 1 | | Metallica Master of Puppets

03.05.16 | If anybody wants to see a particular album, rec it and I’ll post, note that if the album has a 1000 ratings, it takes my code like 8 minutes to extract the numbers. | ArsMoriendi
03.05.16 | I feel like you just love math haha | Spacesh1p
03.05.16 | Thanks for posting another stats list. I think this is really interesting and would encourage you to continue if that's your plan. | Spacesh1p
03.05.16 | I'm terrible at math but find stats pretty interesting so it's like I can do math or something when I read these. | ArsMoriendi
03.05.16 | IDK Do one for Portishead's album Dummy. | Spacesh1p
03.05.16 | Nowhere near 1k votes but if it was I would be interested in seeing Liturgy's "The
Ark Work" since it's so skewed on the rating charts. | macman76
03.05.16 | On it Ars, and I will post more Space, if anybody has any ideas, I'm all ears | Spacesh1p
03.05.16 | Thanks man. What are you practicing this for, if I might ask? | Calc
03.05.16 | your last list was great dude don't sweat it. I actually understood that one better than this one though. | macman76
03.05.16 | I want to go to grad school eventually, programming/data-analysis skills will make getting in easier and managing a project easier. Its also somewhat of a challenge to be the first (i think) to analyze data from the site. | Calc
03.05.16 | first original thing on this site in years imo. keep at it homie. | macman76
03.05.16 | Calc, if its the weighted averages that are confusing, imagine if you could rate more than once, each user's rating is counted multiple time (by the amount of reviews, other ratings, and lists that user has) | ArsMoriendi
03.05.16 | Well technically because people have alts... they can vote twice... or three times.
I wonder how different averages would be if they only someone rate once per IP Address. | hal1ax
03.05.16 | whats the square root of my pulsating anus | porcupinetheater
03.05.16 | And their rating relation with each other remains exactly the same, so the point of this is...? | Calc

03.05.16 | "whats the square root of my pulsating anus"
14. | macman76
03.05.16 | porcupine, different weighting would make Master of Puppets from a 4.4 to a 4.1... also, the weighting could greatly affect the course of the rating of new albums | Alastor
03.05.16 | haha, you're great. weighted mean by comments would be interesting. | Mister Twister
03.05.16 | You should do Extravasation by Aspid | macman76
03.05.16 | Done mister twister, almost all other albums drop in rating with the weighted averages, it looks like Extravasation might actually be a little underrated since it increases with the weighted averages | ScuroFantasma
03.05.16 | Cool list man, i enjoy these, pretty interesting | Alastor
03.05.16 | I'd like to see one for Kill Em All. Probably beating MoP? | macman76
