02.16.16 | definitely not aic |
MyNameIsPencil
02.16.16 | Soundgarden I guess |
Sniff
02.16.16 | Pearl Jam is out bigtime |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | Nearly impossible to choose for me, all 4 rule. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | I'd like to point out that I love Pearl Jam just not as much as the other three. |
Dylan620
02.16.16 | would have to say Nirvana. I like most of what I've heard by them, and I respect them for the impact they've had on music, but AIC, Pearl Jam, and especially Soundgarden have always struck me as superior |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | Soundgarden or AiC if I have to. Stone Temple Pilots and Screaming Trees would be about the same level of those two as well.
Nirvana were something else. Pearl Jam have stuck it out, they get the longevity award and are a classic band in the old style. Those two are waaaaaaay above the others in stature/importance/discog quality
Every AiC mk2 album that's released lessens their legacy, should have worked under a new name. AiC minus Stayley is a bad joke
Imagine Dave Grohl releasing every Foo Fighters album under the Nirvana banner, it's almost that ridiculous to my ears |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | For me it goes
Nirvana
PJ
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | Soundgarden are the only ones I've seen live and they were badass, they've gone up in my estimation no end based on that. They're the closest to a modern day Led Zeppelin, I like the middle eastern guitars and Ben Shepherd's song writing/influence. They are maybe a shade behind AiC. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Nirvana-Soundgarden-AIC-PJ for me.
I really like STP as well, and jammed some Screaming Trees recently and loved it. |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Saw Pearl Jam and they were absolutely amazing despite Eddies 'bonoisms' on his knees pleading for no more war or debt or whatever sanctimonious drivel he was spouting before cranking into the next classic. |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | Never seen any of the 4 live and they all rule to me :]
Clay bud STP is great, glad to know you finally checked Screaming Trees as well. Don't forget to spin Mudhoney and Blind Melon when you can. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Yeah, need to check the Melvins as well. |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | ...and Send No Flowers :D |
NeroCorleone80
02.16.16 | Melvins have nothing to do with grunge |
rufinthefury
02.16.16 | Soundgarden fucking blows. |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | I've never heard Send No Flowers but I remember you had a review for it once Doof. Would I dig it? |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Superunknown is probably my favourite grunge album |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | Dan - It's like a Brit attempt at Alice in Chains, it's actually not bad at all |
jerryorbach
02.16.16 | Who farted |

02.16.16 | Well, AiC is one of my all time faves so I'll give em a chance. |

02.16.16 | Jam Dive at ear splitting volume and wash your mouth out!!! |

DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | Listening to SNF now and they're 65% PJ to 35% AIC |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | Yeah bud, I was pretty much getting that feeling from the tracks you told me to listen plus the opener. |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Cheers Dan dude, yeah I remember hearing it awhile back and it's certainly not the original but it's not without its charm.
Trying to remember what the b-side was to No Rain, it was a live version of something where Shannon addresses the crowd not to panic but there's rumours someone has brought a bomb into the building. :D can you imagine that now! |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | Dan - It's worth a full listen, there's some depth there |
TheCrocodile
02.16.16 | Both PJ and Nirvana can go idgaf |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Nirvana were the dirty, sarcastic punks like we all were.
PJ the big alt rock act with "feelings"
aic the metal band lumbered in
Soundgarden the highly regarded pioneers but they just were a bit too rock/metal.
Nirvana were fucking unbelievable at the time as a source of power and in bringing originality to the mainstream.
Amazing times. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Do you consider the Smashing Pumpkins grunge Zak? |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | PJ and Nirvana were youth movements, Nirvana at a near Beatles level and PJ about half their impact.
AiC were a revolution...confined to the bedroom.
Soundgarden were a decent band, nothing more |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | I'll give it a chance Doof, thanks :] Funny, as you ask that question I'm spinning Siamese Dream trying to prepare an english presentation for tomorrow. |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | Soundgarden needs more love here, I mean come on Matt Cameron is the bollocks behind the drum kit, Ben Sheppard is a great songwriter, Kim Thayil just fucking rules and how can you not love those sweet Chris Cornell vocals?
Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are classics. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Yeah Soundgarden and Nirvana are a notch above AIC and PJ for me |
protokute
02.16.16 | NIRVANA |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Too fucking right the pumpkins were 'grunge'
Anyone who tells you otherwise wasn't there man. |
TheCrocodile
02.16.16 | yeah musicianship alone Soundgarden is way above the rest |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | I think you could definitely tag the first 3 Pumpkins albums as 'grunge', Clay bud. That being said, Siamese Dream is a f"cking masterpiece. |
Ashen
02.16.16 | PJ has to go, and everyone who said soundgarden is wrong |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | PJ should stay as well, so you're half wrong bud :] |
Ashen
02.16.16 | It's interesting to see how divided people are over this topic tbh. I never really cared for Eddie or his songwriting |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | lol.
Yeah PJ are right up there. And just to clarify when you deem things 'grunge' you're falling into Creed, Bush, Live, Alanis Morrisette territory i.e a Warner brothers version of rock that was trying to capitalise on the current generations penchant for downbeat, angsty alt rock.
Back in the day Sonic Youth, Dino Jr it was all 'grunge' to us kids. There was no such thing as 'grunge' |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | 4 Non Blondes |
danielcardoso
02.16.16 | It's interesting to see how divided people are over this topic tbh [2] , and yeah Zak is spot on , expect that Alanis ruled :] |
Dylan620
02.16.16 | Soundgarden needs more love here [2] |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | I've got time for Bush/Creed/Live but they don't compare to these four fantastic bands. |
NordicMindset
02.16.16 | Nirvana has to go |
Log S.
02.16.16 | pearl jam, easily
after that, probably soundgarden but superunknown is more or less my favorite of the albums listed (even if we're just votin the bands themselves here) |
Log S.
02.16.16 | how can anyone have time for Creed |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Mark Tremonti is a great guitarist imo that's why I got some time for Creed. |
truekebabpower
02.16.16 | Soundgarden needs more love here [3]
My ranking from best to worst is AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana. Nirvana are great, but they sound like a band with a bunch of high school kids compared to the rest imo. I understand the simplicity of Nirvana is appealing to some, but to me the other bands are just flat out better.
And the best album is probably Superunknown followed closely by Ten and Dirt |
Log S.
02.16.16 | super unknown > nevermind = dirt > ten
they all good tho |
Log S.
02.16.16 | & nirvana isn't just about the simplicity, to me
i mean, what you said may be applicable to bleach but the dynamic kurt & novaselic had w dave grohl was a bit more elevated than a high school band |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | Yeah for real, the high school kids analogy doesn't fly. |
evilford
02.16.16 | Both PJ and Nirvana can go idgaf [2]

LotusFlower
02.16.16 | get rid of nirvana |
wham49
02.16.16 | Nirvana had nothing new to offer, they were just a 70's rock band, that took themselves WAY to seriously |
LotusFlower
02.16.16 | that makes 0 sense. |
evilford
02.16.16 | "Sputnik logic= AIC/Soundgarden > Nirvana/PJ "
makes complete sense to me |
ryu
02.16.16 | IMO Jesus Christ Pose is the best song to come from all of these bands, therefore Soundgarden for mine.
AIC > Nirvana > PJ.
Also PJ started sucking from Vitalogy onwards. |
EvoHavok
02.16.16 | Pearl Jam if we really have to ;-;. |
MO
02.16.16 | "Sputnik logic= AIC/Soundgarden > Nirvana/PJ "
yea it's really a no brainer tbh |
wham49
02.16.16 | CLover, it makes 100 percent sense, you want them out too, but I will tell you I was a sophomore when Nevermind came out and it was not that great, people thought they were trying too hard back then, for some season since his death , it has grown, goes to show how bad music has been since then |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | wham - Nirvana took themselves the least seriously, they had the most punk ethos too, dunno where your logic is with that
the band released Bleach and Incesticide, they were the least like 70's dinosaurs...unless you're talking about the original 60's band?
Alice in Chains channeled the Eagles on Jar of Flies, Soundgarden are Zeppelin and Sabbath worshippers, and Pearl Jam turned into their generation's Rolling Stones. Nirvana were more like The Beatles and The Stooges mashed together. |
onionbubs
02.16.16 | if anything, pearl jam is the most similar to a 70s rock band, and they aren't particularly similar to one either. |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | You don't half talk some rubbish wham! What were you doing back then? Air bass guitar to Rush? Nirvana were un-be-fuckinlievable. |

02.16.16 | Nirvana > Pearl Jam > AiC > Soundgarden |

02.16.16 | I knew this debate would get heated haha, not many Nirvana lovers round these parts. |
wham49
02.16.16 | not talking rubbish guys, I was jamming to thrash, punk, 60's rock, Maiden, johnny cash, things like that. I hated Nirvana, really liked soundgarden, and Alice along with Chilli Peppers and other bands of the time, but thought Nirvana were trying to hard to be different. The best thing they did was Unplugged
please enlighten me, why was Nirvana so awesome, music wise? |

I agree completely, I just think that compared to the rest of the big 4 they are the most stripped down, simplistic and for this for me the least interesting. I feel like the other bands bring a bit more to the table while still having the raw energy of Nirvana.
|
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Maiden were leotards, hair and screech.
60s Rock was something that was passed on by people who said it was great and it was great but it was the past.
Punk was great but completley unimaginable. Well UK punk certainly was, American punk was brats doing bratty things.
Alice was metal, Chillis were FNM rip offs
Nirvana were what the youth were looking for, needed and identified with overnight.
I'd heard of them hadn't seen them.
I was introduced to them completely unaware of what I was listening to (Lithium) and it absolutely melted my face. It was only as it was playing I was told "this is that band Nirvana" they opened the door to the underground and the rest is history.

claygurnz
02.16.16 | AIC and Soundgarden maybe, but I don't see PJ having that raw energy that Nirvana had. |

02.16.16 | Nirvana are the only ones who've been diluted by a billion teen hangers on, t-shirts, Courtney Love, Foos, 'voice of a generation' Cobain iconoclast forced down the throat.
Even with all that nonsense the energy still permeates.
When it was 'pure' it was fucking unbelievable. |
ArsMoriendi
02.16.16 | @clay: keep a tally dude. |
DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | with Nirvana it was a case that Kurt just had to let the music flow out, he needed the outlet, it sounded as natural as breathing
his voice was unique, hearing it the first time stopped me dead in my tracks, there was nothing studied or mannered about it, almost animalistic in its instinctiveness
the music was depressive, cathartic and exciting all at once - try and think of too many bands who can truly pull that off and make it sound like they weren't even taking the task seriously
yet the songs were as catchy as Elvis, the Beatles or Michael Jackson. there was some genius song writing going on there. The lyrics were the perfect balance of surreal, humorous and disturbed.
that's about it, a natural artist |
wham49
02.16.16 | thanks for showing how ill-informed you are Zakalwe, so you found Nirvana after the fact and are trying to tell me how me and my friends felt when Nirvana came out during my high school years, I don't think I need to go any farther, but will if you want.... |

02.16.16 | 13 come to think of it. |
ryu
02.16.16 | Pound for pound Soundgarden and AIC were the most musically complete of these bands IMO. In PJ, Gossard and McCready are no slouches, Cameron was awesome on drums but better in Soundgarden. For Nirvana, Cobain was pretty mediocre as a guitarist and an OK vocalist. Novoselic was decent but didn't have a bassline as memorable as "Jeremy" or "Would". Grohl didn't hit his stride as a drummer until much later (QOTSA - Songs for the Deaf). Outside of these bands, Temple of the Dog were pretty good and incidentally had both Cornell and Vedder on vocals. Brad was another good early Grunge band and featured Stone Gossard from PJ. that's just my take on it and is obviously subjective and up for debate. |
wham49
02.16.16 | All we have to know is how long all of this lasted, maybe 3 years before this all went away, def. did not resonate with everybody. Grohl has made a bigger impact on music with his other bands than Nirvana, they were here and gone in 3 years, because Cobain was such a tortured soul, he couldn't take it, give me a break. |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | No way have Foo Fighters made even close to as a big of an impact as Nirvana. |
wham49
02.16.16 | nobody for the screaming trees or meatpuppets, that was early but def. made an impact on these bands |
wham49
02.16.16 | Nirvana was just a new version of garage rock, nothing special |
zakalwe
02.16.16 | Grohl (bless him) compromised. Foos are a stadium band doing radio ditties.
When have stadium bands doing radio ditties ever held any weight? |
ArsMoriendi

02.16.16 | I don't know, I like their sound, especially In Utero... |

Another moment is that '92 MTV video awards where it's all dinosaurs dishing out awards. Brian May saying a piece about Freddie. Lars being a total bellend, Def Leppard doing a live performance that is total bilge.
Then on stage enter Nirvana looking like it might as well be 2012 they crank in and blow absolutely everything that 'was' away. |

02.16.16 | jerry or bach, whoever the fuck you are, regardless, you are right my opinion carries no more weight, however I have perspective of the time. They obviously were huge, but many music lovers of the time were not that impressed. Music get romanticized the older it gets maybe that is why I prefer music made in the 70's, I have no time perspective on these bands to ruin it, they are just music to me. |
Apollo
02.16.16 | so many bad opinions in this thread.
all 4 rule.

02.16.16 | AIC > Soundgarden > Pearl Jam > Nivana.
Just my opinion, but AIC resonate with me the most emotionally out of the four by far, and are incredible songwriters and musicians. I enjoy the other 3 as well, but Nirvana's musical chops just aren't on par with that of AIC/Soundgarden/Pearl Jam. tbh. Although i'l give Kurt Cobain credit for having a voice that's so well-suited to grunge, and for producing In Utero, which is one of the grunge movement's best albums. |

DoofusWainwright
02.16.16 | 'Ten and Vs slay Vitalogy'
For most people I'm guessing, I like the extremes with PJ - Vedder is an awesome punk vocalist and the acoustic stuff like Immortality and Nothingman is way more affecting for me than big over emotive lung busters like Dissident or Alive.
Vitalogy was a really unexpected album from Pearl Jam - their darkest and angriest work |
claygurnz
02.16.16 | I enjoy both aspects of the band, but yeah Vitalogy has some fine songs like Nothingman and Not For You. I just hate the filler like Bugs and Stupidmop. Got a soft spot for Better Man though. |
